An Amazing Shop for Used / New Japanese Carpentry Tools at Risaku Hamono Kōbō (利作刃物工房) in Fukushima

- In this video, we visit a tool shop that is known for used tools of all types and trades. However, on this particular visit we went to their Japanese Carpentry Tool Shop which is in a different location than their used and other new tools. This shop is known for their extremely extensive collection of Funahiro tools.
I was impressed with a lot of the tools that they offered there. Some of them were very unique and some were very rare. A lot of the tools are available if you have the money.
I would say that Risaku Hamono Kobo is worth the trip if you can make your way to Fukushima, Japan.

I have the Naniwa app 300 to 16000? Thoroughly enjoy them. Thank you for these videos. There is a tool store in north of Alabama in the USA. They have 2 shelves that are 3 foot wide. Each shelf are app. 25 feet long. They are filled with files of all shapes and all stages of production. I get lost right there every time I go there.

Inoue Hamono in Tokyo is an awesome shop, which this channel educated me on. I made a specific point to stay in Tokyo long enough to go from Tokyo Station to this shop and highly recommend anyone do the same, if they can spare about 3 hours in total. Anyhow, while there I was fortunate enough to meet the father, mother, and the son, who speaks far better English than I speak Japanese. He offered to sell me some more items over email and the phone since I bought my fill but wanted more. They do have a website if you search it by name, and perhaps you could arrange something similar.
Language barrier I think. Look up Yamasuke Kurashige online for one that does sell internationally.

I have a strong suspicion the curved planes are for boat building. They would be for the rabbets in the stem, stern posts, and keel, if needed. This would be to accept the planking. Obviously, the skewed blade would be best to attack all of the changing grain you're bound to encounter. Any really small ones you might come across would be for making barrels and buckets.

Thank you. I'm about to buy a set of chisels and would appreciate your suggestion. I've been looking online at Kurashige tools and they offer sets in, blue steel and white steel and high speed. I live in Indiana USA and work mostly with walnut and cherry some oak. What would you suggest in chisels steel? Thank you again for your videos. I'm old and will never have the opportunity to travel to Japan so this has been wonderful to follow you through these stores.
I think the curved ones are for making arch shapes and working around a curved edge
Coopers plane, I would suggest, or something similar (taiko artisan?). Although japanese haven't used that much heavy barrels in their history (?), its mostly economy of the raw materal and lighter structures with food and grain containers and such.

Is it easy to get a job as a helper or an entry level position doing woodworking in Japan? I would love to come and learn under someone for a year or two. I’ve got about 10 years under my belt but I’m always looking to learn new techniques and processes.

I wish I could find a good quality Japanese deburring tool with a wooden handle that ships to Norway. I can buy some other deburring tool for like $10 with 10 spares tool bits, but I would much rather pay $100 for a quality one that lasts a long time and that I can sharpen myself.
My credit card would get maxxed out in there.

A side note; in my local online market, I spotted a set of Japanese chisel for sale. I would like to seek your advice regarding the worth of it. The set is going at 700,000¥.

I will be honest... I am not sure about the chisel blacksmith, however, I think that Shirogami chisels are very good. I do not know if you are looking at Ooire Nomi or Chu Tataki sized chisels. I would think as a guitar maker you would want a smaller chisel length for ease of use. I use timberframing chisels which are a bit longer. Also, it is hard to know the quality until you use them. However, if the tool doesn't work well, then it could be the sharpening skill level. Some chisels are easier and faster to sharpen and stay sharp longer than others, but this all depends on the stones you use to sharpen, your skill level, and the wood you are using them on. I would say there is no magic bullet of an answer for what is a good or a great chisel. I like to use Tasai, Funahiro, Ouchi, and Jindaigo but I do not have a complete unified set. I try to buy from a variety of blacksmiths, so my set of Tataki chisels are a mix.
The price you are talking about is very high. At that price you could probably buy a round trip ticket to Tokyo, use public transportation for a week, shop for chisels from one of the stores I showed on the channel, eat some good sushi, ramen, etc., and stay at a reasonably priced hotel for a week and still be a little cheaper than 700,000 JPY.

Not up to your usual standard of video production. That shop looked amazing, but you hardly showed it's contents, or conveyed its charm. The whole video seemed rushed. It's a shame because your work is usually excellent.
