This could finally inspire me to learn Pd properly! I mainly use VCV Rack, and we've been missing the 'Prototype' module which allowed us to run Pd code since the v2 update. This looks like it will work nicely instead.
Yeah, I wish this existed when I was learning Pure Data for the first time. Nice, it's really cool seeing people getting inspired to do stuff with PlugData in so many different ways! I hope you have fun with it!
@@SoundSimulator Yeah! Would be nice if we could have more than one on one track + have send and receive work between patches, or have osc working. But man it kinda fix a lot of why I would prefer Max over PD in many cases.
Very nice video, i was aware of the project, but never really tried it. It feels like you said, libpd + max ui. You can actually change the shortcuts to max default ones, it's on the menu configuration, not only that, you can create your own shortcuts.
Woah, you're right!!! Thank you so much for telling me. I love how most of the shortcuts have two separate key-mappings (one for Pure Data and another for Max).
@@SoundSimulator I thought so. I was running into bugs with Pd 0.53.1, but I just completed your first 3 Pd tutorials using PlugData, (and they open in Pd just fine)!
when creating abstractions i can't set the graph on parent size on the properties of any patch, i could however set the x and y range which is useless for me now, but after updating plugdata, i can't even do that :( why is it like this? this always worked for me in pure data.

hi im trying to make a drum machine but how to i treat notes as triggers? the notein sets a pulse for note on and off, i dont want the note off message
You can use the object [select]. For example, connect the outlet of the velocity into the [sel 127]. And the outlet of the [sel 127] will send out a trigger.
@@SoundSimulator I'm on windows and using reaper. But I solved the issue I was having. Turns out I had to set the track to "output" instead of "input" which inputted my laptop's mic instead of outputting the track with the VST on it. I'm still learning!
i was excited to use my arduino+sensors pd patch on Plugdata but found that the COMPORT object isn't working (is easy to install the external on plugdata but doesn't work on ableton) :(((
Seems like a very good way to get into the world of designing custom VSTs. I wonder how the processing requirements compare to other ways of making VSTs.
PlugData in that aspect felt similar to Max4Live. It's more dynamic than creating a VST with C++/JUCE. Tho that means it's easier to get into endless adjustments, haha
Hello, I just made a patch in plug data and I was wondering if there was a way to export it as it’s own vst plugin (Like with camomille for pure data for instance). I tried to use camomille but there’s a lot of incompatibilities with the original pure data so it does not work.
I wonder if GEM works in this? I'd love to be able to generate visuals from within a daw instead of having to mess around with routing between applications
GEM itself isn’t working because it conflicts with JUCE. However there’s another visual external that is working, or at least Timothy is working on making it work. Join us on the Discord to talk about it!
@@SoundSimulator Timothy was just saying that he’s experimenting with something that would allow JUCE and GEM to run at once, but it sounds like a large-scale rewrite. The project is definitely looking for coders!
I absolutely love the look of pd vanilla. it's so minimal and brutalist but plugdata is just very convenient and stable. actually more stable for me than pd somehow. Also I would love to hear from you again speak about max and pd (especially now with plugdata) why gravitate towards one or the other. what are the key advantages that max offer than pd doesn't for example
Yeah I made that "Max or Pure Data" video before plugdata came along. It's been a while since I made it so I forgot what I said in that video, but I think I'll end up saying similar stuff to be honest. In general, I'll recommend starting out with Plugdata. And then go thru Max's 30 day free trial and decide from there.
This was such a weird find for me. I’m going on a trip, and I’ve been working on Max stuff. But I don’t like bringing my computer, and I’d love to just use my iPad. I found out about plugdata, and there’s an iPad app. And holy crap it’s so similar to max, that I might actually be able to use this for the time being to practice and experiment with ideas, and have it translate to everything I know about max. We’ll see what kinda issues I bump into tho haha
Nice! I'm glad that you stumbled upon this video before the trip :) I actually tried it on my iPhone recently and it worked well even on a tiny screen! I was able to put together a step sequencer. I can imagine the experience being even nicer on the iPad. I hope you give it a try :D And plugdata in general has developed so much since this video came out.
hi! recently i started to using pd again, im a beginner on this so when i downloaded pd for the first time it was like 5 months ago (pd 0.52 i use a macbook pro m1 13 inch) and the first thing i did was "white noise" from your video, and yeah it works find... i stop learning pure data because i started university. Today i opened again but the problem is that i turned On the dsp so the white noise started to sound, as it should be. But now apparently PD crashes, i can't edit, i can't put elements like object, button, etc... nothing and the worst thing is that I try to close pd and it doesn't work, command + Q doesn't close it, "force close" it's the only thing it works. So i decided to download the 0.53 version, i started making a osc~ 440 to dac~ and turn on the dsp, it sounds but i turn off the dsp and the sound stays there, pd again doesn’t close, so i press "force close" now PD it's closed but the sound it's still there and i have to restart my macbook. What is the issue here? when i started learning pure data with your videos, this things didn’t happen.
That is a bizarre issue. I have zero clue on what's happening unfortunately. The Pure Data Discord and Facebook groups are super active, so I highly recommend asking there. Good luck! I hope it works!!! It might be worth trying out PlugData!
Hey there, might be a bit late reply but I also had similar issues all of a sudden. Not sure if you have Blackhole installed (I thought my problems were caused by that) but I could only fix this freezing issue by force quitting, deleting the pd app, then reinstalling it. On first start I changed the settings so Blackhole isn't the in AND the output (don't know if this is relevant, but did it anyway) and Pd now works again without any issues. Hope you can also fix your issue, let me know if this resolves anything for you!
@@SoundSimulator First, thank you for the quick response. That's interesting that you say it is the same as downloading a plugin because I put the Plug-data Pd version from Github into my vst3 folder but I don't see it in Ableton 11.
