Ian Paice is the drummer and last remaining original member of Deep Purple still active in the band today. Ian founded Deep Purple with singer Rod Evans & guitarist Richie Blackmore, in March 1968. Ian’s also played & toured with Whitesnake, Gary Moore, Paice Ashton Lord, Paul McCartney, George Harrison & others. Ian co-wrote many of DP’s classic tracks, including Child in Time, Highway Star, Lazy, Smoke on the Water, Woman from Tokyo and others. He’s also a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I've thought about it a lot and it's been my opinion, for what it's worth, that Ian Paice may just be my favorite drummer. I'm almost 70 so I've heard some of the best and that includes guys like Buddy Rich, Ringo Starr, Duke Renfrow and so many others. Just like guitarists.....too many great ones to choose from. I guess it helps to be a big fan of the bands that they play with.
I am 62yrs old. I Remember sitting around a friend's house when I was 12years old when I heard Deep Purple for the first time. What a drunner I said, I still haven't heard a better one. Andrew Harris

I agree with you, but somehow he seem to have flown under the radar as far as reputation goes. When did you ever hear his name mentioned when people are discussing their favourite (or best, whatever that means) drummers of all time? I don't think this is anything to do with ability or influence. Maybe its because he's a more private person than your average rock star?
@@richardsinger01 , yes, well to answer your question, Ian was a contemporary of Ringo, Watts, Moon, Bonham, Baker, and later, Peart, so he was in the company of other legends. Secondly, Purple was a 5 piece band with Ritchie and Jon getting much of the attention?

Can't express enough how important Ian Paice has been to my drumming life. My single biggest influence. Named my first son Ian. I have a full replica 1972 Ludwig "Made In Japan" drum kit.
The sheer number of hours I spent playing to his records could never be measured.
So...jump ahead to College and I was lucky enough to get the drum seat in one of the best big bands in the United States. One of my oldest friends asked me once..."we listen to mostly rock and metal..but then you sit down and swing your ass off! How do you explain that?" I didn't have an answer for him until decades later and it hit me. I grew up listening to Ian Paice, Danny Seraphine, John Bonham, Joe Morello, Carl Palmer, Mitch Mitchell...and THEIR love of early jazz greats was translated straight into me by accident! Just like Ian said. That is just how I translated things so when I switched mindsets and did the jazz thing...I approached it from a rock/jazz mentality and had the best of both worlds.
Ian is the first and most important link between players like Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa and Joe Morello...and the rock drummers that followed. Unlimited chops...feel for days..huge glorious wide open sound..(Ian's snare drum is still the standard I try to achieve every time I sit at my drums) a stunning soloist...it can do it all.

Wow what a genuinely personable human being. On stage he is an alien from space. A drum style all his own and the ability to pull you in and keep you there. Best classic rock drummer by far !

I really enjoyed this interview. Ian is very nice person and so down-to-earth. He was the main reason for me to start playing drums. As a school kid I used to listen to Made in Japan, Machine Head, Fireball, In Rock and Who Do We Think We Are (very high on my list of Purple albums) and tried to remember how Ian played and I wished that I would be as good.

A TON of respect to Mr. Ian Paice - he is a consummate professional (as are all members of DP!). Some of the most captivating drumming, imo. His ability to swing the song but work within the framework is amazing. DP is one of the most creative BANDS around - as in RIGHT NOW. Much respect for years of experience / dedication and making it look effortless - true artists.

Listen to Ian's swing in No One Came, especially towards the end of the guitar solo. His drumming, along with Roger Glover's bass, laid down a funky and swinging beat. Magic.

To listen to Ian is a treat. As a teen, I got hooked on Machine Head, playing it a thousand times on my 8 track player. Even as an immature teen, I often wondered about many of these artists, because as great as their music is, their music gave me only one single dimension of who they were. With interviews such as this, many, many pieces of their puzzle get filled in, and they become three dimensional people. With regard to Ian, well, I've discovered that he is actually an extremely likable person in so many ways. With I could shake his hand, but this is the next best thing. Thank you for sharing.

This was one of the best interviews ever, both in terms of the interviewer and the interviewee. The questions were substantive and thoughtful, and I appreciated that they were both personal and professional. I also appreciated that the interviewer didn't interrupt the answers. He just let Ian speak, unencumbered and uninhibited.
As for Ian Paice, man... what a legend! He was so honest and open, and has such a kindness to him. I've seen a few interviews with him, as well as the content he puts on his YT channel, and I am struck by the consistency of his nature. He is genuinely a good person. I bet he is an amazing grandpa. 💜

The more you talk to him, the more you know and find out what is actually not true. JLT was only on half of The Battle Rages on Songs, for instance. The fans think Ian Gillan sang over an entire album of erased vocals. Not true, according to IP. Nor did the record company threaten to drop JLT for not liking what they sent them. The band found out they might be able to get Gillan back, so they fired JLT and went for it. Stories are often more about damage control, and DP has them.
@@PurpleHounding Bands would usually sell their mom's into slavery if it means getting their most wanted singer back. On the flipside, singers are often mercenaries too. And leave the band with their dicks in their hands, while singer leaves for solo career

My grandfather was a semi-professional Jazz drummer in the 1930's-40's. Later on he had a real disdain for rock music. One afternoon back in the late 70's I sat him down in my bedroom and made him listen to "The Mule" from Made in Japan. When it was over he paused a minute and said "that boy has done his homework". The best of the best...Ian Paice!

Deep Purple became one of my top favorite bands early on with the release of the single "Hush". Growing up in a small, and I mean small, (population 2000), Texas town with the nearest city was 80 miles, and there was no pace to buy albums. The local drug store would occasionally order and stock 45 rpm records, and I bought the only "Hush" they had. The rest of being a huge DP fan is history.

I have been a fan of Ian Paice since I first heard Black night on the radio. He mentioned that he only started doing interviews after Jon Lord left the band, and I think I must have watched most of them. This interview seemed to have Ian the most relaxed i have seen and looking like he was truly enjoying the experience more so than any of his previous interviews. Ian does not get his rightful credit from the masses as one of the absolute pioneers of creative rock drumming. In my opinion he eclipses many of the drummers from his day that are hailed as the best in the world. Another great interview Craig. well done.

In Russia, he is a legend for many of the generation of the 70s.
@@user-pe5pc9vs7q Deservedly so. Deep Purple even though hailed by many as musical virtuosos, still rarely get the credit they deserve. Those musical improvs from the 70s are timeless.

For someone who has experienced a rock & roll lifestyle through the period of the late 60's onwards, isn't it incredible Ian Paice should be so humble, measured and articulate in his views on all things including life itself. I really respect him as a drummer but I have so much more respect for him now having heard this interview. All credit to the interviewer who asked some terrific questions and allowed Ian the time and freedom to proffer such thoughtful and honest responses. One of the most enjoyable and insightful interviews I have had the pleasure to witness.

Great interview. As a young drummer growing up, Deep Purple was my favorite band and Mr Paice my fav' drummer. Years later I was lucky enough to play support for D.P (Perfect Strangers Tour) and saw Ian back stage, so (totally in awe) bowled up and introduced myself and Ian was so cool, he even paid me a compliment on my drum sound. So gracious, sincere and humble. One of the best days of my life for sure. Thank you Ian for all the inspiration, fantastic drumming and music.

Great interview. When I heard the first drum break on Black Night in 1970 (Wow! what was that!?) I was hooked. The best.
Once heard him live with Paice Ashton Lord. The band had to plead with the audience to sit down and shut up, so that they could start the next number. Jaw dropping stuff.
Oh! .... Saw him with Buddy Rich Orchestra. Not many rock drummers could sound like a master in that context.

I just found this interview. Wonderful to see you Ian. I was 11 in 72. A family friend had just bought Made In Japan. He knew I was a kid that almost never left the record player. So he had some headphones and I listened to what became the factor that made me decide to play drums. I was playing bongos in front of the record player since I was 8. I was trying to find my instrument. Ian you and the amazing Deep Purple band captured my mind. It was a permanent decision. I have tried to find that special group of players that would actually go when the big call came in. You would't believe how many players just won't go. I still run into that issue now. Life tends to pull us out of our route though. So I have never made that dream come true as far as having the great band that agrees they want to go and moves in lockstep. I just got my dream kit a classic 75 Ludwig Vistalite Octaplus 12. Beautiful blue. I think you would dig them. I hope you read this life note from me to you. YOU are a very important person in my life. I love you and I love Deep Purple. I hope that one day b4 its all over Ian that we can meet some time. If not that's understandable, but I am your friend and always will be. I'm working on an Alice Cooper set now. I'm doing vocals and drums overdubbed on the original Alice tracks. It's a blast. Got to see DP in Boston in 2019! Found a YT video of "No no no" from German TV and HAD to see them. Was not disappointed. Ian Paice is amazing!

I was 10-11 years old with a tennis-racket in my hand when Made in Japan or Europe was spinning on the vinyl player on my mothers crappy stereo set, must have had hundreds of sweaty sessions with the tennis-racket to the great happiness of the neighbors and that was the closest I came to being a guitar hero. Deep Purple will always be one of the five best and greatest band ever together with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Jimi Hendrix for me.
