This was just after she did the wonderful revival of The Sound of Music at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London. I saw that production and it was simply marvellous. Clark was adorable. The audience loved her.
Don't Sleep in a Subway is a great tune because, if you're musically educated, you know the chord pattern on the verses were borrowed from Pachelbel's Canon from the year 1680. This chord pattern had been borrowed many times, subconsciously by many songwriters. it's a solid pattern for which many melodies can be made up on that pattern. In turn Pachelbel may have heard it in church, monks singing some pattern very similar. Tat said lol, Petula Clark is the Queen of the British musical invasion of America, and NO one can take that away from her, a phenomenal entertainer and singer, God bless her, female singer owe her a debt of breaking through for them.
It was live on Sunday nights. The performance of "Downtown" in this video was not from Sullivan. Her dress was similar, but this was from something else. The Sullivan performance in on youtube too.
