Regardless of who's equipment you're reviewing, I really like your philosophy of encouraging people to start out cheap. I agree that you don't need the most expensive gear to have a great time. I went out last night at the Manistee National Forest. My frying pan was from Goodwill. My ground cover was a free piece of plastic I got when ordering some roofing tin. I had a great time. You Sir, are spot on.
Totally agree with you on budget gear when starting out backpacking. Another advantage to this is that you get to discover what is important to you. Everyone is different, the gear you end up with will reflect this. Also not every trip is the same. The process of discovering what works for you will give you the knowledge to outfit yourself based on the trip.
Sam been watching for a very long time and you’ve definitely gotten into shape. Love it! Seeing you grow as a person and as an influencer is awesome! Keep grinding cause you have solid loyal fan base!
Thanks for saying you don’t have to buy the most expensive gear. I am just beginning camping since retirement and I am 72 and a widow. I bought what I thought was a good Ozark trail tent and made a fire my first as my husband used to grill out for us , we never went camping, and had fun with my dog on the lake and then foolishly posted pictures in a camp group I joined on Facebook. Well one woman took one look at my tent and wrote I should have bought a Gazelle as everyone knows that is the best tent there is and what was I thinking buying a cheap tent and solo camping with it. I was thinking it was what I could afford. Her comments really hurt but I just replied thank you. Maybe she has the money or her husband does but I do not but I don’t want to deny myself the enjoyment of driving somewhere knew. It rained the last night I was there and I packed out in the rain laughing because I slept peacefully and walked long walks three times a day and used the swings at Ft McAllister on the lake and took pictures of the sunset and had tea in the morning in peace. Why can’t people just go back to, if you don’t have anything good to say just be quiet. Sorry for the rant. I enjoyed your video and learned a few things too. Thank you
Some people are just mean or clueless, I encounter this but rarely on my channel. Truth is, if you put yourself out on any social media platform your gonna need a tougher skin. Please don't let the negative comments get you down, concentrate on the positive comments. It's sad but you can get 100 comments 99 good and 1 bad and the negative comment always hits the hardest and if you let it, the negative comment will overshadow the nice comments. FWIW, Constructive criticism is not mean, but how it is said that can be mean. The old saying is true, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, hang in there and let the positive comments over ride the negative ones.
Mmmm , mmmm. Mississippi grits for breakfast. My old achy bones don't care for tent camping but I did camp in an overnight astronomy field in my truck a week ago. I saw millions of stars and the Andromeda galaxy.
You can also rent camping gear, world class stuff for a few days at a time for pretty cheap. You ought to consider doing a video renting top of the line gear for cheap. Several companies do that.
Something I learned from another channel - On my get-home bag and my bug-in bag and my camping backpack I have changed the zipper toggles to red for where I keep my first aide kit and day-glow green for where I keep my fire starting materials. I took it a step further by adding a blue zipper toggle for where I keep all my hydration items and water filtration. Love the vids mate.
I buy from Temu myself, some things are good some not so much, nice to shop local if you can, but a lot of us can’t, sometimes you get what you pay for, other times you get a bargain, good job, love your videos,!
i've bought budget gear in the past(multiple times) before nearly 50yrs in Alaska taught me that top quality gear works out better in the end. Love your channel Sam
I would say that if you buy a cheap tent from Temu and there is a chance of rain bring a waterproof tarp that you can cover it with, well a cheap tent wherever you buy it might need a tarp
Coolers Lanters (of all types) Cook stoves Tents sleeping bags Everything a person needs to enjoy the outdoors. Coleman is a brand a family can rely on.
I'm putting together a budget kit also. Most from Amazon, some from Temu. I got a Teton Sports Hiker backpack which I really like. Really transfers the weight to the hips and adjusts to my 6ft2in torso. I bought a cold weather bag from Temu. It's duck down so it weighs 3.5 lbs, but it's really warm. I already had a 2.5 lb duck down summer bag. You don't have to spend a lot of money anymore. Big deal, I carry an extra 5 lbs.
I remember going through old, cheap tent and sleep system that I spent more than 50 nights in, and finding that while it's still totally serviceable, it smells bad and there's no way to get the smell out. Glad I didn't spend a ton on it. Love the titanium spoon and anodized aluminum pots and kettle. Super tough, light and serviceable.
maybe once you start drinking the temu lemonade (creating an account) its fine, but man the website is so irritating how it forces you to spin that stupid spinner.
As a longtime scout leader and backpacker, I would say there is a middle ground. Buy a good but not overly expensive tent so you don’t have miserable nights that scare you away from camping. I’ve seen so many people that buy ultra cheap tents that sometimes don’t make it through the first weekend. Save money on cheap cooking gear and buy a basic esbit style stove to start. Water bottles are free too. Sleeping bags can be cheap but are heavier. Balance your spending without going crazy.
Quaker Instant grits??? GAH!!!!!! Please Sam, don't do that to yourself. Yellow grits, cooked 20 minutes with salt and butter. If not possible in camp, eat some kind of Nature Valley bar. Well, my southern soul gets riled sometimes.
The internal pump for the sleeping mat requires you to open that valve on that pump. It has a one way valve to allow air to be drawn in as the foam pump expands.
You might want to test that out in the rain every review that I have seen on their tents none of them were waterproof including the epic disaster of my daughter's tent, her and her family got flooded out and a broken Pole. Check the seams in the tent and the zipper. But another great video, thanks for sharing it with us.
You should get you a therma cell Sam. I hate being sucked dry by mosquitos. I appreciate all of your comments as to the buying of gear. I totally agree. Until you know that you are going to like it and have time, don't invest a ton of $$$. Appreciate your content and bringing us somethings to watch to get our minds off of our own problems in life. I have always enjoyed your adventures. Keep them coming Sam. Best wishes to Ms. Bananas.

So I whole heartedly agree you don't need to buy the most expensive gear out there to get started. I will say this tho, if you buy what you can afford and even if it's middle of the road gear, you're better off. Plus is you buy better & more expensive gear, if you can, the resale value is more than cheap stuff. But again, as you said, buying cheap stuff works. I have about $2000 worth of gear I take on my yearly hunting trip to the mountains with me, one of the best things is a $1 Ozarks Trail lantern I found on clearance. It goes with me on every trip I make. What lighting do you use for filming at night?
I agree with your philosophy about starting out with cheap gear to get a taste of what the adventure reality is. I've seen so many people waste money on gear that they will only use once or twice.
There is a balance to be found Sam. certain things you can go budget on, others I recommend getting gear that is safe especially if you will be exposed to harsh environments, cold, wind rain etc... Proper gear for the environment you will be in. Summer folks camping near home or a state park can experiment with cheap (inexpensive), however, if you are on a river or backpacking deep in the woods or will experience inclement weather you better pray your gear is adequate. Don't cheap out on Shelter, Sleep gear and clothing but that doesn't mean spend a fortune either, find that balance. Also some food for thought... Quality gear can be sold off easily if someone decides that camping isn't for them. And I agree, car camping gear is a lot more affordable, for one you are in a protected environment and probably on a road to bail if there is an issue, so your gear can be a bit on the budget side.
Buying cheap risky gear is kinda fun, and if a sponsor sends it-then why not try it, crap or decent gear. You mostly get what you pay for.. good video.. ignore your uneducated temu haters, business is business..i dont buy from temu but if they send me something free im gona attempt to use it. I just use Amazon mostly, same stuff for the most part..
For sure! I think I'll get some use out of the cook set. I don't know at this point if the tent is waterproof, but it's very serviceable otherwise. The sleeping bag is great for summer. 100% I'll be taking the long spoon on future trips. Definitely some decent pieces in that pack for sure.

With your chair sinking, I wonder if placing some cork coasters under the feet would help. They weigh very little and would hardly take up any space in your backpack
When I first got into bushcraft and camping I thought I needed all the gear and gadgets. Then after realizing how little time I have due to work I’m happy getting out and using a tarp and trash bags for a bed and shelter. Yeah I’ve bought more gear over time but I know I don’t need top dollar equipment. I live in Kansas City so any time I want to camp it’s almost an hour drive and on packed public camping land with designated spots. Even when I drive 3 hours to a conservation it’s all rules and regulations for everything. But a bit more on the wild side if I go hiking
Sam, quick heads up on recent developments with your sponsor you should consider. The Arkansas Attorney General has sued Temu, the Chinese shopping app, for allegedly accessing and selling user data without consent.
The amount/type of gear you THINK you need when starting versus what you will actually use are vastly different. Some things are worth spending money on… some not. I still use a $50 Walmart awning every time I camp. I’ve never used my Dutch Oven.
Another great video Sam. I truly enjoy your content. I read through the comments and I see there a little pushback about temu. I love getting great deals so it doesn't bother me one bit. I buy cheap stuff on Amazon and Walmart and the dollar store even. Because it's affordable. I want cool stuff just like the next guy and like most Americans I live on a budget.
