This song would always play on XRT when I was in the car with my mom. We would never talk during, just listen. Such a good song. Makes me think of her every time I hear it now. Rest easy Mom.
Actually, it was back in middle school when the music video for Australia came out. My social studies teacher put it on, because he was a fan of The Shins, and I was hooked
I discovered this song (and the Shins) about 14 years too late when I heard it playing in a Wahoo’s in Southern California. While I’m sad I missed out for so long, i’ve more than made up for it since because holy shit I love this so much.
Man, how special was 2007? We got Wincing the Night Away, Neon Bible, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, In Rainbows, Into the Wild, Favourite Worst Nightmare, Icky Thump, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, Boxer….Unreal.
As a huge fan of The Shins since the 90's I must say this is actually a fantastic performance. It's always hard to get the original sound of a former band, and they still did an amazing job.
He's not off key at all, not sure what u guys are talking about? It's awesome when it doesn't sound exactly like the album because then you have 2 versions! The album one, and a new one
Too lazy to look for such comments, but I didn't notice any pitch problems after one listen. Not at all. Tempo was slower, for sure, but I think they sounded great. Love this song.
That's not why people go to see a Shins concert for though. I think most fans love them for their lyrics, melody and sound, and are content with getting just that.
Unfortunately Jessica Dobson left the band to concentrate on her own project, Deep Sea Diver (they are pretty good, check them out). I agree though, she was my favorite part of seeing them live.
@@marct9808 nah, she plays the hell out of that guitar and very good vocals! She deserves her spot on any stage. She’s been writing and producing music with her band Deep Sea Diver. Opened for Pearl Jam for a number of shows. She’s the real deal musician who looks really good doing it!
That's Pam Berry, the song right before it on Wincing. They always play it before Phantom Limb, as Mercer clearly wrote it and placed it there to be the intro to it.
No, only the drummer was fired. The other two members have come back to play and guest on albums from time to time, although they all play in other bands.
This one has always been tough for me to analyze in terms of what the song is about or the lyrics mean. Some of it seems to make sense and some doesn't (to me). I think in one of his interviews, Mr Mercer said something about usually writing the music first and then having to come up with lyrics later. I believe it!

Rest in peace 🙏🏽
They all look like Middle School teachers and I love it.
lol
lol, yes, except for jessica. she's a Ph.D in the Fender Jazzmaster teaching at the Graduate level.
i just realize that all of them are in the "simple song" video
Actually, it was back in middle school when the music video for Australia came out. My social studies teacher put it on, because he was a fan of The Shins, and I was hooked
and they are all gone now, replaced by yet another batch. Settle ! with the lineup changes Mercer.

I always want this song to go on for hours.
He's so beautiful. His songs are magical and his performance is awesome. I like him being a little shy, that makes him even more special.
Yes. :)
The Shins are so God damned good they bring tears of joy.
RIP Richard Swift (the keyboard player).
I feel his best musical contribution was on the 2003 album Old by Starflyer 59. You should check it out if you've never heard it.
WHAT ?
among the greatest songs in rock history
Man, how special was 2007? We got Wincing the Night Away, Neon Bible, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, In Rainbows, Into the Wild, Favourite Worst Nightmare, Icky Thump, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, Boxer….Unreal.
God these guys are perfect, they have the ability to hook your heart

I saw them in Vegas for this tour. I was 9. First and greatest concert I've been to so far.
this song is magical
My favorite The Shins song!!!
This was the first tune I heard from them and I have been hooked since. One of my desert island picks, for sure.
I will never forget these amazing people
Has it been TEN YEARS? Holy crap. Love you, Shins.
As a huge fan of The Shins since the 90's I must say this is actually a fantastic performance. It's always hard to get the original sound of a former band, and they still did an amazing job.
Bryan Gilmore 90s?? The fuck? first album didn’t even come out until 2001 I believe
@@ENTPhilosopher They released an EP in the 90s.
90S JAJAJAJAJJA ALL THE PEOPLE ARE OBSESED WITH THE 90S THE SSHINS CAME UP IN THE EARLYS 2000S THEY ARE TOTALLY 2000S
Absolutely love these guys, one of, if not the best indie rock band out there!
Seeing my daughter sing this always brought me to tears and she was like 7
Mercer is a rare talent. The successor to Brian Wilson imo. Touched by genius.
Spot on
I was thinking the same thing! The chord changes and vocals are so reminiscent of Wilson.
YES. I keep them mixed together on my 'Sound Inspirations' playlists
Damn i love this band. If they ever want to come sailing, they are all welcome.
❤❤❤ great show great song!
wow her guitar tone is so nice
Stunningly excellent writing and arrangement. Perfect.
He's not off key at all, not sure what u guys are talking about? It's awesome when it doesn't sound exactly like the album because then you have 2 versions! The album one, and a new one
James Mercer has more experience on the microphone than the douche bags posting comments, I promise
Too lazy to look for such comments, but I didn't notice any pitch problems after one listen. Not at all. Tempo was slower, for sure, but I think they sounded great. Love this song.
Stunning.
the clearest, purist voice!
Bright and beautiful!

Such an awesome group❤

Him and Ben gibbard
Great song. Great band!
Candy for the stuff between my ears!

Parecen maestros de secundaria, son buenísimos.
The Shins, The Unicorns, Deerhunter, Radiohead, etc.. have that indie sound in their rock that is just the beezkneez
I definitely can't listen to Phantom Limb without Pam Berry as an intro.
very good the shins
I think this is my favorite Shins song....no wait...
These guys have such a good groove and vibe. Great stuff.
that singer is incredible.
ohhh this girl on guitar is perfect, i mean how she plays, love this song, like the live version
Unfortunately Jessica Dobson left the band to concentrate on her own project, Deep Sea Diver (they are pretty good, check them out). I agree though, she was my favorite part of seeing them live.
pearljammer13 What songs would you recommend?
***** A few of my favorites are "Always Waiting", "One By One", and "Weekend Wars". Hoping for a new album from them this year.
pearljammer13 That's great, thanks for the help.
Vitalik Lopatiuc dude! note the beard and adam's apple
It's gotta be in the best albums of 2000s-2009, right?
Lovely melody!
Yes, Brian Wilson would approve! It's very haunting.
All hail James Mercer.
lovin it, no gimmicks, just good music
This version of the Shins is good, but I miss the old lineup 😢
I wish they were still around 😭. They sounded so much better..
You're watching the best band of the year!!
Great song
Fantastic
faithfull fan since 2006!! great band
0.41 Best transition from one song to another ever.
what was the song before the phantom limb?
I love Jessica Dobson.
I second that emotion. Marry her I would!
Underrated big time. Great band
Amazing!
todos parecen como profesores de escuela y me encanta..
отличная песня
Lovely…
❤❤
That pam berry intro though...nice.
The audience is remarkably chill.
That is possibly the greatest response i've ever heard
Best band from the 90's!
I miss Jessica Dobson in the lineup
We all do, we all do :(

Awesome
1st comment. 1st to view it. 1 of many to love it.
This reminds me of The Smiths.
+Sigurður Baldursson This reminds me of The Shins.
'Could ever tra-aa-aay' that's very The Smiths
Mercer likes them a lot.
U icelandic?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
the guitarist! i love her cutest women ever!
melancholy
man don't ever write a song with this many high notes, you might actually have to sing it Live!
is the guy on the keys who played drums on the video?
blackcatmusic The keyboardist here is Richard Swift - the drummer in the vid was founding member Jesse Sandoval.
Which Shins album sounds the most like this one besides the one this song was on? I didn’t really get into Oh Inverted World.
this is hang out with you girl ,your friends and have a pint somewhere in the sun.
Don't understand why the drummer and guitarist in this are different from the ones in the official video. are they studio musicians?
Just got into the Shins this past year...wow, kinda like a Radiohead lite, or a Wilco, bit more poppy... amazing stuff... tight band
tremendous songwriting as well. second to no one imo
#1 hypster in the whole goddam world.
the singer reminds me of buck darma, the smiths, and dexies midnight runners. The guy is awesome.
Amazing song. Way better with the original lineup.
Pam Berry+Phantom Limb
haha who has the lyrics to that intro goshh
when did jack white start dressing in drag?
Love this song but have to admit, I can't take my eyes off how cool Jessica Dobson is!!

You know that Pavement music video where the guitarists fires the whole band and hires young sexy replacements. Yeah, that.
what's w/the 20 second weird-o introduction?
they play that intro on the album version?
That's Pam Berry, the song right before it on Wincing. They always play it before Phantom Limb, as Mercer clearly wrote it and placed it there to be the intro to it.
Clearly you're not familiar with DSOTM.
If Kevin spacey did counter culture while on drugs.
bass player married to lead guitar player?!
The Beach Boys lost tapes.
So he fired his original band didnt he?
No, only the drummer was fired. The other two members have come back to play and guest on albums from time to time, although they all play in other bands.
And here I thought it was, “and the girls had perfect boobs” :(
dreamy
the chick is kind of hitting the chords and the notes before the dude, lol
MrScalzo13 a lot of music works that way.
Either it was hard to get perfect timing due to the noise level / acoustics live on stage, or else they were going for an echo effect.
...and the Wankers of the North... 0:48
The lyric is actually "white girls of the north", as per the lyrics in the liner notes.

Great but letterman is a looney bird
this town seems hardly worth the time....
Such an old song writing device to have that little recetativ prequel.
