How to Glue Pearls to Earrings

  • Check out the new Diamond Mounter merch!
    cbilton.creato... This video is another upload that was inspired by the lack of good advice on youtube.
    The advice I give here comes from knowledge and experience gained over many years working as a professional jeweller. Over a long time working in the same shop you will experience doing repairs a certain way and with feed back from customers about wearing their jewellery you worked on you can adjust and improve techniques and methods used to get the best results.
    If you glued a pearl back on to an earring post and the customer comes back 6 months later with it to be stuck on again you didnt do a good job! You must try to understand why it came off again to learn how to repair it better. Was the glue poor quality?, wrong type of glue?, moved it before the glue had set?, was the hole in the pearl too large for the peg?, was the peg too short?, did the peg snap off this time?, was there loose old glue on the pearl remaining when you glued it back on?, maybe the customer is doing something?, are they always wearing the earrings in hot showers, baths, saunas??
    As many years pass you will gain experience about common reasons for jewellery getting damaged and be able to advise customers correctly.
    I recently joined patreon!

    With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
    With nearly 25 years of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
    I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street jewellers model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
    My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter TH-cam channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
    My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too. This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
    There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
    If you may be interested in becoming a patron and supporting the channel to help it grow please click the link below to go to the Patreon website and find out about all the benefits that come with being a Diamond Mounter patron.

    There is now a new entry level tier which costs just £1 a month.
    Its named the supporter tier which allows you to support the channel with out any substantial financial obligation. I will thank you personally on the next Diamond Mounter video uploaded!
    I hope you will consider becoming a patron.
    Thank you,
    C.Bilton
    With this channel I will share with you methods and techniques I have learned over the previous 24 years as a professional jeweller.
    I specialize in high end bespoke pieces made the old fashioned way by hand.
    I wish to document everything I know, continue to learn and make accessible to everyone rare skills and techniques only usually taught in high security jewellers workshops.

    Brilliant!!! I have always wondered the proper way of adding pearls. I have seen people use super glue and thought um yeah no! 😆 thanks Chris for another top tip!! Now I can confidently work with pearls🙏💖🙏

      Yeah super glue is very sticky but its so brittle. Itll break again in no time.

    Hey Thanks for sharing info. Btw, you can find blue tack in Japan in Daiso actually. Its is called as "粘着タック" in English Nenchaku tack / Adhesive tack. It is in blue color and available in Daiso and Seria. Thanks!

    I learned to let the pearl dry in a wooden clothespeg. On one side we drilled a hole in or sawed a line to the middle to stick the Pin through, the other side had a little dent from a round bur to hold the pearl firm :)

    Couldn't really see the post when you were putting the glue on. If it is a real cultured pearl, acetone to wipe it with? What else can be used to hold it together tightly? Is that necessary as long as the pearl is all the way onto the post?
    Thank you.

    Thank you! I’ve been asked to set a set of pearls onto studs for a family member. The glueing help is sooo appreciated! Do you have any advice on drilling the pearls out? Keep up the videos! I’m really enjoying your content!

    • @DiamondMounter
      @DiamondMounter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should probably use a pearl drill. Normal metal work ones can chip the shell. Although its possible to start with a very fine drill then open it up with a diamond burr without damaging the edge of the hole

    Chris, there are never enough videos on how to do great things - but I suggest you check out Soham Harrison (on TH-cam), I think he's done no fewer than 20 to 30 "gluing on pearls" videos (for various designs and projects). Still going to listen to YOU! I really love your channel. Peral dealer that buys zillions of Tahitian pearls, suggests "Rhino Glue" emphatically. Are you familiar with that adhesive?

    I use seperate bags for every tube of glue and hardener, to prevent the fumes interacting - and to not needing to throw both tubes out, if one of them should get a "folding crack" (I don't glue very often, and have experienced old two components not working well). So try not to take chances with things, that are worth "a lot".

    Years ago there was a white material similar to shellack that was by far the best cement for pearls. You melted it onto the cup & fixed the pearl immediately. I currently use Aroldite, but was thinking of trying one of these glues that require a UV light to harden.

    • @DiamondMounter
      @DiamondMounter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I may have some of that! Its a light cream colour and is very hard but melts at a low temperature. I was given it by an old guy who had been a jeweller for 50 years when I was starting my apprenticeship

  • @STARCROSSEDMOTO

    Is the epoxy/glue strong enough to hold the pearl in place on a ring without using a peg?

    • @DiamondMounter
      @DiamondMounter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I imagine it will glue on quite strongly but it may not last a long time. Rings get banged about quite a bit

    • @STARCROSSEDMOTO

      @@DiamondMounter I have made a ring out of steel, but it doesn't have a peg. That is why I ask. I don't want to gift this, only to hear that the pearl was lost.

    would it help to scuff up the post and cup before gluing

  • @FatKidBrody
    @FatKidBrody 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Noticed you didn't twist your pearl peg I always put a twist in my peg.it increases the surface area for a better grip. It's how I was taught.

    • @SWINGERINTO
      @SWINGERINTO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not. If you twist your wrist, your arm does not increase surface area. If you rough the surface or serrate it, you increase surface area.
      Twisting the metal means that the glue can't just slip straight off.

    • @DiamondMounter
      @DiamondMounter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SWINGERINTO Yes I usually rough up the inside of the cup and post also sometimes. The glue can key in to it

    • @insederec
      @insederec ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm careful about pegs because they can be brittle and break. Never say never. Much easier to take a bur and cut notches, I feel.
