  • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Retrospective
After tackling the first game last year and finally getting around to playing Paper Mario the Origami King, I wanted to go back and play what many consider the best in the series and the best Mario RPG in general. Sorry for the long wait on this one guys, I ended up redoing my script several times as it felt like it was too bloated and that I wasn't really saying enough.

I was very happy to hear the bug fables shout out at the end, such a great spiritual successor to the paper mario games!

To answer your question at the end, you should make videos however long or short they need to be. Treat them case by case as not every game benefits from just one format. But in my opinion, I think more broadly talking about a game rather than talking about everything as it happens is a prefered method. I think it's only necessary to talk about specific setpieces if there's something worth discussing. How does it elevate or diminish the experience or what makes it stand out from the rest of the game? Either way, anything you can do to cut down on the length of a video is a prospect worth exploring.

I definitely agree with the terrible pacing in chapter 2. It’s literally the worst part of the game and it happens too early on. I have so much nostalgia for this game though. The tournament arc with rock hawk is some of my favorite stuff in all of Mario

When I bought a gamecube for some retro gaming in 2018, this was the first game I rebought.
It is still so much fun.

This game is among my top 5 favorite games of all time. I really wish the Paper Mario series would revert back to its RPG roots. With Alphadream no longer available that ends the Mario+Luigi RPG franchise and Paper Mario's current direction is atrocious. This game has probably the most well-thought-out story in a Mario universe. Nintendo should do more expounding on the lore of the Mario Universe and introduce new characters from already established races. If this game has a remaster coming to the Switch I'm definitely buying it. Right now, the only quality turn-based game in the Mario universe that's on the Switch is Mario + Rabbids but that's more of a strategy game than an RPG. But I have hope that Paper Mario will return to its former turn-based RPG glory someday.

I like the entire play through method. I was hoping you’d go through the whole story cause I didn’t get to play this one 😅

I still very much love this game, but I absolutely LOATHE the discourse surrounding it. I very much stay away from watching anything related to the first game or this because nowadays all it amounts to is 64 fans turning it into a VS war with the game and just repeating the same points and the excessive complaining has become incredibly draining. And to address certain things, I don't think Grodus is interesting, but to me that was always kind of the point. He wasn't supposed to be deep or anything, since Beldam was the main antagonist anyway. I'd very much take variety over samey any day. Overall, though, even though I consider Bug Fables superior to the first two games, I think this is peak Paper Mario and is often tied for my favorite alongside Origami King, as I feel each game balances each other's pros and cons well. Almost everything in this game, I prefer over the first one. Especially in regard to combat and boss design. The only elements I feel are better in the first game are the Peach segments and a couple Chapters.
I also don't think Chapter 2 has that much backtracking in it. It's just really the Flurrie segment, but that's about it. And its mildly annoying, but not obtrusive, the area is very small in size, and the player is only forced to go a full distance twice. It's basically just a tamer version of Chapter 4 because the player is required to take less steps and are in a much smaller amount of space, so the distance isn't draining. Just mildly annoying here and there. In chapter 4 you have much larger space to travel through, requiring multiple screens, which makes the distance to travel much worse. I also find this is one of the few areas in the game that where being barren makes sense because it's a secluded area and you aren't in it for so long. Just enough to take in the scenery and traverse the tree. It's worth noting backtracking itself isn't a problem, but rather how its designed. Which not many people make that distinction. This might just be a me thing, but I almost never find losing Punis an issue, because one them being startled by Piders amounts to one area where you have to take them out to progress and there's only two of them, and two whenever they do scatter they just fall in an area below yours, it's not like they scatter about the tree and you have to recollect each one of them, and the way down is literally just one pipe away from progressing again, yes it's a mild obstacle, but I don't find that every game needs to be a smooth painless experience as that feels utterly unrealistic. As for them getting stuck, again, just slightly walk a couple spaces back and then move forward again and they'll continue to follow. The Puni and Jabbi fights I don't really find you can lose those, simply just use Flurrie's Gale Force when the fight starts and that's basically enough to win them every time.
The only issue I have is they can feel a bit inconsistent with Flurrie's windbox. Namely when you try to blow them down when trapped in the cage after retrieving Super Boots. But again, it's not that big of an issue, just mildly inconvenient. I would much take traversing the tree over Chapter's 4 and 7 any day. As they are undoubtly the weak links in TTYD's chapters. Chapter 2 is hella overhated. It's actually my favorite chapter in the game.
I don't mind Grubba conditions as they add flavor to every battle. I don't think you should just mow down easy fights, with no issue then it would be boring, the game is already easy. If I have to fight say, Major league fights, it will just feel samey to just attack the whole battle, adding a condition means you have something to look for, if I have to be immobile for 3 turns, then I can plan around that. The conditions allow the player to use strategy and plan. The only issue I have is that on repeats is that the Minor League fights can feel a bit passive.

That combat system on Origami was terrible. I liked the game though and it did make me sad 🥹
