On the cusp of the 80's - a period of significant musical change - we have this gorgeous song that is truly timeless by not being tethered to any epoch is pop musical history.
As a teen I was a little uncomfortable about how much I liked this tune and his music. I didn't tell anyone because it seemed soft and uncool and I was an insecure teen male. Now I realize it was pretty cool to perform this great music while not bothering to put on a rock star charade. Hell, I once saw an interview where he said Richie Blackmore considered him the best guitar player to cover for him, so he once played onstage with Deep Purple when Blackmore was too sick to play.
LUV YA BLUE! Love seeing him wearing that Houston Oilers jersey when this was telecast. Mick Jagger followed suit and wore one when the Stones played in Houston the next year, 1981. Great undeniable tune...liked it as a rock loving youngster. Still do as an older rock fan.
i seriously dont think chris ever knew how good he was ........ man i was young and went through the 90s rave culture and dire straits stevie nicks etc etc after him and barely remembering him ( only because my older brother) .... GOD WHAT A VOICE AND TRACK .... RIDE LIKE THE WIND ...THESE GUYS FORMED MY MIND ....LEGENDS HONESTLY ... WHEN YOU PREFER TO LISTEN TO THE LIVE VERSION OF A TRACK ....HEY THERE IS YOUR ANS OF QUALITY VOCALS AND MUSIC... SPICE OF LIFE TIMELESS SONG TO ME, I WILL NEVER FORGET HIS VOICE ..TOP CLASS FUNNY THING IS I HAVE HIM ON THE VERY TOP WITH THE VERY BEST IVE EVER HEARD ... AND BONO STEVIE NICKS THE CURE , BOB ,PEARL JAM , METALLICA TO NAME A FEW THAT I LOVE
I loved this show, I was 20 then and had been watching since it started, back the this was one of a very few ways to see bands or musicians, other than going to concerts, this guy was a great musician and songwriter. Thanks for flashback
Chris cross was a genius. Crammed all his brilliance in a short span of time. Unheralded success on his first album. It's never been achieved by any artist before or after. Won the Grammy and Academy award in the same year
This song brings back so many memories of late summer of 1980, just before school started. Listening to this song in my hot bedroom, and drifting away to it…Even at six it just spoke to my soul. A Yachty even then
This is what's missing in music today, how many contemporary songs can you say off the top of your head can actually get inside your head like this one and put you on a fucking sailboat in a quiet bay watching the sun go down?
And the 10 Grammy goes to Christopher Cross!☺ one of the best songs ever written, can't be duplicated, still listening 40years later!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
They played this WAY TOO MUCH when it first came out but it really is a fantastic song. If this song doesn't relax you and put a smile on your face, you have no soul.
Love this song!!!! & BTW That double neck Stratocaster is the bomb I remember seeing one eerily similar to the one that he's playing at the Sam Ash in New York City way back in 2013 however it was gone when I went back several days later.
Nowadays thid dude woud break out via American Idol or something like that. Back then he just broke through on pure talent. Unless he was on Star Search or Solid Gold or something. He's kinda like that guy in Jaws 2 that was also in Dog Day Afternoon. Stands out and stays with you.
I think it was Andy Salmon, the original bass player in the band even before the first album came out, along with Tommy Taylor on drums and Rob Meurer on keys, also original members.
One of the best performances ever by a non-football player in an Earl Campbell jersey.
just thinking this myself, hey, that's Earl!!
Only second to Earl!
Same here. My first thought - he was an Earl Campbell fan! Lol.
Also my senior year in hs. Too cool!
😂
Earl Campbell is proud
That double-neck Fender is spectacular! I'll bet that thing is worth a fortune today.
i'd like to have that. that looks fucking cool.
I asked him if he still has it - he said no. So it’s out there somewhere!
@@tb0ypHe doesn’t hold onto stuff.
IKR!! not every guitar player can pull it off
Thanks for naming this guitar. I never knew the name.😊
The guy on the triangle crushes it.
THERES NO MORE MUSIC IN 2023 LIKE THIS WOW
Have you heard Benny Sings cover this song in 2023?
@@graphicbrew i just did sounds Horrible🤢

Your critique is so poetic and profound
@eclipse12121 thank you!
I like to think of this as post funk pop, and it's just fantastic music.

Great point-not tethered to any epoch!

This song always come to mind when the sun is out, the breeze is blowing, and I can listen to the leaves in the trees. Thanks Christopher Cross
The song is a soothing and relaxing and spiritual it deserved the Grammy award

I don’t think he did either…He just never looked confident on stage
One of Yacht Rock's finest tunes! Great performance, and what a voice! Still stands the test of time.
The theme song of YR
Amén 🙏 brother! Sirius xm yachtrock!👌😎👍
Shows you how hard it was back then to really get good synth string pads. Lyle Mays was the absolute master at it via Oberheim.
The Canvas can do miracles just you wait and see
Most tranquil song in the history of pop music.
This song has meant so much to me over the years. Wonderful to hear it again. Brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
It certainly makes me bittersweet. I was six when it came out, and I remember hearing this on the radio back in 1980.
don't Chris look like the kid that lived next door to you, that you grew up with, that you would never imagine would ever have hit record??
Yeah he does, and that’s what did him in when MTV hit, sadly
Yes, u got it !
I like that he just looked like a regular guy instead of a rock star or something.
@@paisleyprincess7996 Their loss then! What does it matter what you look like if you make beautiful music?
Beautiful song of 1980 I wish I was in my youth in that decade
Sort of reminds me of my Navy days. On beautiful nights you could watch the moon shining on the water and it was peaceful at times.
Thank you for your service

I was 21...We'll never see this kind of talent again in our lives...60'-70's-80's
I was only two years old when he performed this on Midnight Special. Wow 😮
September 12, 1980. What a day, what a year! Year of wonder and blessings ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

A classic and timeless song.
I was 16 when this song came out.
I remember how soothing it was to me and it has the same effect today.
First time I hear this song was around 1984 back in my country. I think I was about 14. This is August 2024 and still love this song

Effortlessly beautiful ⛵️
This song takes me back to Sailing in Vancouver's English Bay and the Gulf Island's B.C. Canada.

Awesome song and performance in 2024.
What is it about this song eh?.... something truly about it that takes us sailing with the song 💜
Such a soothing, timeless song, and that Oilers jersey, no matter what your team might be, is really the icing on the cake. It was beautiful, too
Christopher Cross is a LEGEND!!! Great AOR Music great vocals great songs!!!
Great guitar player as well.
@@Lance37a The guitar at the end of Ride Like the Wind is fantastic and a lot of people don't even notice it because of how it was recorded.
@Mel Prophet yes it's real low in the mix.
Masterpiece ❤
I was 20 when this came out, I was already married with my first child for 3 years at this time, times of my life, what a reflection
What a great song! So easygoing and peaceful! His voice was beautiful, too! Takes me back to high school. ☺💜
I love this song

The genesis of yacht rock!
Muito bom, em 1980, caramba eu tinha 2 anos
They played this WAY TOO MUCH when it first came out but it really is a fantastic song. If this song doesn't relax you and put a smile on your face, you have no soul.
A Great song by a great Artist
That percussionist is incredible; the sound at 2:30 should've been on the record too

Looks stoned, not many can sound as good as the original,❤️ it,great 🎵 the song takes you on a beautiful journey,
Como . Crear algo tan maravilloso. Ah . Ahora . No hay nada .
Love it, an awesome singer
Amazing
Excelente música
Chris has golden pipes
Cada vez que ouço esta música só me faz lembrar o quanto amo a minha mulher❤❤❤❤❤❤
The weird thing about Christopher Cross is he hasn’t aged much, if at all, since the 1970’s.
Facts! Saw him on Rick Beato and he looks the same, just with less hair 😅
Wow ‘what a classic masterpiece!!
👏👏👏👏
excelente guitarrista poco reconocido

Are there any plans to upload Genesis' appearance from 1973?
yes, it is in the line.
@@themidnightspecialtvshow Brilliant!!
Id love to have been a fly on the wall to his wardrobe decision making that morning .....
Most decadent and fantastic sounding music category ever: Yacht Rock 🙂
Makes you feel kinda sophisticated when you listen to it,huh?
Love it!
This song is the reason they coined the term " yacht rock"... Robbie du Pree , bill La bounty etc
Mf'er looks like he just showed up to fix your plumbing.
Legend.
Phil Chen on bass??
Yup, he played for Rod Stewart
I think he passed away a couple of years ago. I think he made it to 80.
Looks like one of the Porcarro brothers on bass guitar.
@@johnnyfleming522 could be. The Pocaro Brothers need a monument of them on a yacht

Grammy wins, million LP sales, what happenend to CC after the Another Page LP....why the decline? a mystery that still puzzles me...
