    I had the good fortune of witnessing this spectacular and unique Spanish tradition in this magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on June 17, 2022 after we attended the Pilgrims Mass upon reaching Santiago from St. Pied de Port where we started our pilgrimage on May 13, 2022. The very same cantor depicted in this video was the same person who sang during the Mass and at the Bumafumeiro. This brings back beautiful memories.

    The most magnificent censing of the altar and cathedral that I've ever seen. To witness in RT would be amazing. Thank you for the video - truly glorious!

    The “Botafumeiro” is a giant censer, used since the Middle Ages to purify the air in a Cathedral that was full of crowds. Today, 800 years later, it continues to marvel those present when, after communion, the baroque organs play the Hymn to the Apostle and this wonder of physics begins its amazing pendular swing facing the high altar, rising up to almost touch the transept vault.

    Love the way the censer wrangler at the end just walks up and is all "I got this".

    I finished the Camino in April 2019 when the Cathedral was being renovated. Unfortunately the botafumeiro was encased in a wooden protective crate while the work was going on. Didn't get to see it swinging, but was able to at least see it up close, as well as all the ropes for the pulleys. So....I need to go back!

    I also witnessed this censing last month before the end of the Pilgrim Mass. Truly a magnificent feeling seeing it fly over your head and smelling the incense to clean our heart and soul. 🙏🏼

    Santiago de Compostela is the spiritual center of Galicia...where St. James is said to be buried. In Galician, the censer is called "O Botafumeiro".

    Am I mistaken that the "stopping". of the botafumeiro used to be much more spectacular? Long time ago I saw a recording of a monk stopping it much earlier and getting spiraled around really hard.

      I've seen it 5 or 6 times on my walks to Compostela, and will hopefully see it again at the end of September once I've completed the Madrid camino (starting in 13 days).

    A curious thing is
    The use of incense during masses
    Comes from here, Santiago de Compostela
    Because pilgrims back then, didnt shower
    And walked long distances to come there
    So you can guess how that church smelled like on these masses
    So that botafumeiro was made to burn the incebse and cover up these smells.
    Un dato curioso es que
    El uso de incienso durante las misas
    Viene de aquí, de Santiago de Compostela
    Porque los peregrinos en la época, no se bañaban, y caminaban grandes distancias para llegar ahi
    Asi que pueden darse una idea de como olia esa iglesia en esas misas.
    Asi que el botafumeiro fue hecho para quemar el incienso y cubrir esos olores

    • @ohwhataday7171
      @ohwhataday7171 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is definitely not true. Read the Old Testament. Our Lord Our God asked to receive the incense, for it to be burned so the fragrance will rise up to Him.

    • @alejandroangulo327
      @alejandroangulo327 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ohwhataday7171 Yeah
      No, read the story of the botafumeiro mate
      Thats... literally why there is incense
      The red sea scripts have nothing about incense burning
      But for ceremoniuos effect, they use myrrh
      Which was a gift from the 3 mage kings
      If it were true, then you wouldnt have a problem pointing which versicle in the OT it says that.

    • @tasokova2802
      @tasokova2802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alejandroangulo327 From the OT :
      Psalm 141:2 Let my prayer be set before Thee as incense, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
      Exodus 30:7 The high priest was to burn incense every morning and evening, resulting in incense being before the LORD all day, every day.
      The use of incense absolutely is biblica,l based on the OT. In the Christian Tradition, incense continued to be offered as a symbol of our prayer and love rising up to God.

    Now all they need to do is restore the ancient traditional Mass and customs that were used at Santiago DeCompostella but abandoned after 1970. I went to Mass in the basilica and it was a banal thing. A priest sat on his behind while a sister went up to the tabernacle and also gave Holy Communion out. See that altar in the clip. It is new and behind the back of the priest isca glorious ancient High Altar with the shrine of St James behind it. That altar isn't used!!!! The Spanish Church surrounded by such deep history, Catholic identity and tradition has become a testament to mediocrity!

    • @roberto71180
      @roberto71180 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amen brother !!! The Spanish Catholic Church today is nothing more than a huge pond full of the impious sludge of the Second Vatican Council. In this country, it seems that every Catholic who tries to be interested in the true liturgy of our Holy Mother Church will automatically be marked as a Neanderthal fascist who wants to return society to the times of the Middle Ages....
      A cordial greeting.

      Es tu opinión, nada más. Me parece más banal emplear una lengua, el latín, que nadie habla en la actualidad y muy pocos entienden.
