到訪荷花節首天早上放晴，蟬鳴鳥語，一派夏日風情，但天色突變，大雨滂沱，頓時荷花荷葉被吹得東歪西倒。只見池中幾朵白中泛黄的"復壯友誼牡丹蓮”不怕風吹雨打，顯得傲然獨立，英姿依舊，花瓣上水珠紛陳，晶螢剔透，別有一翻迷人魅力。
本片中的荷花名為復壯友誼牡丹蓮，是以美國野生黃荷花和中國白荷花混種培育出來。花色淡黃，花重瓣，花瓣數可達135。花態疊球形而後轉為碟狀。花具淡雅的芳香。花碩大、清雅的花朵具有一種高貴的氣質。始花期6月下旬，着花相當繁密。
本屆橫琴荷花節主題為“樂享荷香”，旨在憑“香”喻意，延續琴澳兩地一衣帶水的歷史脈絡，讓市民大眾深入體驗橫琴自然生態的無窮魅力，並藉此推廣中國傳統文化與非遺元素之美。
在佔地約4.5萬平方米的荷花園內，大/規模展示着，打造如“鏡湖三百里，菡萏發荷花”的弘大75個荷花品種場景。荷花節特意選取“神州美·粵”、“神州美·澳”兩大品種作為主題花，展現神州大地上的粵澳款款情深。
同時，在以中國革命進程為序的“中國紅”系列荷花中，精心挑選北京、瑞金、韶山、西柏坡、嘉興、井岡山、延安等7個“中國紅”品種，宣揚中國紅色文化，讓市民遊客在賞荷遊覽中緬懷崢嶸歲月。

蓮或荷花，自古受中國人所喜愛。宋代學者周敦頤有散文《愛蓮說》稱頌蓮為"出污泥而不染"，像徵着君子和廉潔的品質，使蓮花成為中華文化重要傳承像徵之一。
蓮（學名：Nelumbo nucifera)是蓮科蓮屬多年生草本出水植物，又稱荷、荷花、蓮花，古稱芙蓉、菡萏、芙蕖，是多年生草本花卉。蓮花原產於中國，在水中生活，通常被種植於池塘之中。花一般盛開於夏季，蓮花也因而成為夏日之風物。
