First I love my RAS (was my dad’s) been using it since 1968 I was 14 absolutely the most versatile tool in my shop, extremely accurate, and safe when used and setup properly.
If I ran a shop if Anyone ever freehand ripped a board they would told to pickup there tools and leave.! When ripping have the blade guard close to the board and the “kick back paws” in place. Never crosscut without a fence the blade can occasionally catch and slam the board back. RAS’s will and do climb cut, but usually in a dangerous manor just enough to startle you, mostly when cutting thicker hardwoods.

Can you tell me how you transport your RAS. I have a place at the lake and I'd like to take it back anf forth. But I don’t know if I'm horsy enought. Hopeing you had some techniques.

Also, im reference to Stumpy Nubs. I find him informative on a lot of things. However, he is not going to counter the ill deserved bad rep on the radial. He knows that if someone knicks their finger using one he will be open for a law suit. So he is going to play it safe. Pardon the pun.

You are right. I've got one of those Craftsman 10 inch and a De Walt 14 inch.RAS. The De Walt 14 x 32 is a beautiful thing! No flex.

Stumpy dropped an Angle Grinder on his work piece and did not hold on to it. It jumped across his fingers and into his gut. He didn't know how to hold the grinder. Operator error!

But, he is telling viewer to do things this way.... do it that way...... bla blah bla blah bla blah. I say, get a "grip" stumpy with what you say to your viewers and people still follow his crap, it's all about selling products on his dumb channel.

First off, I have an old Craftsman RAS and I love it. BUT it IS a dangerous machine because it will allow you to do stupid things with it. Built in to its versatility lies its danger. I was fortunate enough to have taken wood shop in high school and had some really good shop teachers who made sure we understood the dangers of the equipment we were using. If you honestly think a guy with no experience or training can start doing all these additional cuts or even rip a board safely without reading the operator's manual or getting any training, well, I don't know what to tell you. The evidence for Stumpy's argument is the mountains of lawsuits and legal settlements and the eventual end of production of these machines from injuries that occurred using them. While I am in favor of personal responsibility, ambulance chasing lawyers, and evidently juries, are not.
It comes down to what's safe for the newbie wannabe wood worker. A RAS ain't it. I read manuals and follow steps. I have good spacial relations ability. I understand some physics, action and reaction, vectors, kinetic energy and basically if x happens where will parts a, b, and c go and how fast. The inexperienced Joe Blow on the street has no idea how much energy is stored in that spinning blade or cutter head. They have no concept of how fast 3600 rpm is at the edge of a 10 or 12 inch blade. Or what will happen when that little vibrating off cut piece inches into the blade. Or what will happen during a rip cut if you feed from the wrong direction.
That is where Stumpy was coming from. I don't agree with everything he says. But he's pretty good at what he does. He is a TH-cam entertainer and product placement entrepreneur. Don't take it personally. He wasn't calling us stupid. He just believes there are safer alternatives. And he's right. But for the money, especially now when you can get a good RAS for next to nothing, there isn't a better, more versatile machine in the hands of an experienced user. Unfortunately, common sense isn't as common as it used to be.
Climbs DO happen with RAS, but when they do happen it's when doing something like a dado or cutting hardwood that's under half an inch thick. Still not easy to make it happen and almost impossible with a calibrated saw with the correct blade. But suppose an inexperience individual buys one at a yard sale and the table wasn't coplanar to the the arm and had an aggressive blade on it? I know, but those are the kind of cases that won in lawsuits. Anyway, like I said, don't take it personal. You are correct. TH-cam has gone reality tv. Controversy gets clicks. He got you. Now you respond. I'm watching you. haha!
I just like watching folks who know what they're doing USE the tools. Can't wait for the ripping video.
    Have a great weekend!

Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD! Tools and methods progress. I'd stand behind Stumpy and his knowledge and experience before I'd ever listen to you. That flimsy Craftsman arm will deflect a lot more than you think, especially with the wrong blade trying to climb through your cut. Thankful that you only have

You know, I have found that there is a safety risk for everything, we do. I don’t mean just with the radial saw. I mean with everything and everything. In my opinion we have gone overboard in accepting the contraints that have been placed on us.
The thing that is said is well if it saves one life. Or one injury its worth it. Definitely NOT! If you would follow that line of thinking, would you drive a car? How many deaths would be saved if no one drove? How many people die in airplane accidents? Lets go a little bit further.how many people trip and fall when walking. Do we quit walking. You know if it would save one life, or one person saved from being hurt or paralyzed wouldn't it be worth it.
Well thats where we are headed. I often wondered who owned the seatbelt industry. Or who owns the child car seat companies. Now don't get me wrong. I like seat belts. I'm not so sure about child car seats. But they've made it a law.
I guess what I'm saying is there is always a trade off between safety and your freedom to do what you want, even if its dangerous. Now back to the radial arm. I've used one for getting close to 50 years. I've also owned a table saw. I find the radial much safer if used and set up safely. The radial was brought down by lawyers on a feeding frenzy. I would love to see the actual stats on table saw injuries vs Radial arm injuries.
I would have to make an educated guess, using past observations of just kickbacks from friends and relatives on a table saw. They all seem to have them on the table saw. If fact my uncle cut off 4 fingers.
Myself I've never had a kickback on a radial saw. So again, I would have liked to have seen the actual stats on radial saw injuries vs table saw, circular hand saws, power nailers, etc. Should we out law them all, you know to save, even that one person. Again NO. Any s
Person with common sense would not want that.
We should want the freedom to choose what tool we want to use and how we use it.
Should they supply factual information and instructions about the product so someone can make their own decisions? I'm sorry for the rant, but it really gets my dander up.
Now, here is my actual opinion on the radial.
If you are doing cross cuts, rips, mitres, bevels. It is safer than a tablesaw. All the other things really can't be compared to a radial because the table saw can't do them.
Drum sanding? Straight line drilling. Not dangerous.
Moulding? You need to really find instructions read and understand them.
Do we want it taken away because people don't read or do stupid things? I want to decide. I don’t want lawyers or the courts to decide. As long as I am not endangering other people. I want to decide.
Again sorry for the ranting. Eightiesman. Keep on keeping on. And your lack of political correctness in relation to these saws is refreshing😊😊
Comes under our freedoms to talk like we want. And if one gets butt hurt. So be it. Its healthy.

😮‍💨😥☹️😤🥺 like to apologize to you dear sir.
I made a comment about your breathing and I didn't want to be rude about. I suffer from COPD and I want to work in my woodshop.
I have viewed a lot of your videos,

No need Scott, the camera is great with the audio.... maybe to great. I have been in the woods all of my life and it's hard to belief what a very small deer tick can do. It is rare to get lyme in the spine and the treatment weakens your body from muscle, bones feeling like they're going to snap and yes your lungs having a hard time functioning specially in cold weather or a passing low front. Even with a couple crack ribs I still go out into the woods. Sorry about your COPD, I think i know how you feel.
