I think that line “maybe you think you’d be better off that way” really sort of solidifies (to me) that he’s kind of discussing himself and his own inability to open up his heart to connection. To me, this video looks like it represents what's going on inside of him. The trees are covered in red and there are what could be red blood cells floating in the air. The girls are ready to do battle when he approaches and I feel like he's battling the feelings of a one sided toxic relationship.
