West Coast metal outfit Deafheaven has really improved their sound on this latest outing of theirs, delivering sharper, more triumphant compositions through a barrage of black metal-style instrumentation.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Of course it sticks out. I can't think of another pink black metal album.
Hhahahahahahaha pink album cover hahahahahahaha
And that right there is why it's freaking genius from a marketing strategy.
@@thisvampireheart1 I bet they where thinking years about how to strike like that
@Ryan Hodge There was also pink Deathcrush pressing.
@@thisvampireheart1 remember when Apple used their art to advertise the iPhone 5c? Shit was wild
People get so hung up on genres that they forget to enjoy the music.
this. even though i have a preference for certain genres I feel like it doesn't really matter cuz there are bands taht suck even in the genres I like.
I'm pretty open minded. I just dont like cliche artists that do the same thing everyone has before them.
Seeing this for the first time four years later. And it’s even more relevant lol
I do not like black metal....ever...and I was just fucking blown away by this album...
I don't care what it is. It's good

I bet black metal snobs would love this album if the cover art was in black.
No it's because their music is trash, so the girly theme fits the band since they are all pussies
Phil Lop lmao imagine getting mad because a band is actually doing something new and helping the genre. They are Black Metal and Post Rock, if you don’t like that, then you don’t like the genre.
@@thomasiacconi5416 so using your logic if I dont label deafhaven black metal then i dont like the genre. What kind of mental gymnastics did you do to come up with that conclusion spud

+UnyieldingDefiance OK Varg, chill. I'm sorry deafheaven isn't kvlt enough for you.
+UnyieldingDefiance this particular album I guess. I think of it more as metallic shoegaze than anything. I do like the black metal influences however. whatever you want to call it, it's a goddamn amazing album.
+UnyieldingDefiance Deafheaven don't claim to be black metal. Having said that, I hope the New Bermuda cover was kvlt enough for you.
Black metal is one of those genres with cool music but an insufferable fanbase.
I know right? All these posers that can't appreciate a good Cradle of Filth album when they hear one... SMH
Idk if it’s Mandela affect but I remember him giving this a 10
Should have!
Same wtf

He's given 10's to noise rock albums too? Not just "experimental hip hop" albums lol yall need to do ur hw before u throw shade

Much like I had at the end of this video. 8!
YES
True
didn't talk about the drummer, I absolutely love him; so musical and knows what to play and when to play it on here and even more so on new bermuda
Personally I don't think they could've pulled a better finale than The Pecan Tree, that was one hell of a song. It didn't take the album anywhere it hadn't been, true, but that didn't make it any less powerful. The fade-out left a very fitting feeling of peacefulness.
why would you think i'm trying to insult my audience in one of my reviews? c'mon, bro.

SHIT GUYS, IF SOMETHING RECEIVES MAINSTREAM ATTENTION, I JUST CAN'T ENJOY IT. IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE ONLY REASON PEOPLE LIKE ME LISTEN TO CERTAIN KINDS OF MUSIC IS TO MAKE OURSELVES FEEL COUNTERCULTURE AND REBELLIOUS. WE DEFINITELY AREN'T ATTENTION-SEEKING, IMMATURE, AND ABOVE ALL, INSECURE DOUCHEBAGS.
I'M RAMBLING, THOUGH.
IKR?
I personally thought the album was beautiful. I'm in love with it.
I found this when I was randomly searching for new genres on TH-cam. I've been listening to every form and genre of metal/rock since I was a little kid, but honestly nothing beats the raw intensity and the unique sound this band delivers (at least to me). I haven't been listening to (what I assume is okay to call) the "New Wave of American Black Metal" for very long but I've always been a fan of bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth and Lantlos that have a huge black metal presence in Europe. This has such rich creativity and passion that I almost passed out just by how beautiful it sounds. All I can really say is this is the very definition of Beautiful Chaos :)
Bleh, it's an amazing album that is multi-genre. No need to try to use one word to classify them. Genres are fun and entertaining to use, but don't let that get in the way of recognizing absolutely beautiful music.

I listened to this album before even knowing what Deafheaven was about. To me it reminded me of a triumphant screamo album. Loved the album. I mean on something as subjective as music, I don't understand how inflamed peoples assholes get when trying to categorize it. The album to me was triumphant, abrasive, cathartic, haunting, and definitely worth a few listens. Compared to their earlier album, I feel this is a masterpiece and definitely earned a place in my music library.
One of the few albums where the shrieked vocals don't bother me. Also the midsection totally makes The Pecan Tree.
Check out Envy.
listen to Panopticon (the band)
if it aint burzum, its bullpucky!
I can't envision a day when I'll know a better song than "Dream House." I appreciate reading (and then listening to) about 'better' music. But, when I get to the 'better' music - I often feel the same way as when I was steered to "Godspeed You Black Emperor," "Mogwai" and "Mono" when I was in the Sigur Ros world. I think it's best to trust, that if I/we have gotten here, it's proof of how transcendent Deafheaven is. I don't know why many feel compelled to write ... "Not as good as ..." on Deafheaven pages. I mean, after you fully grasp the meaning of 'transcendent,' you'll realize why "Not as good as ..." Comments may as well be posted on a Maroon 5 or Justin Bieber page. I don't think bands/artists create music out of a need to be better than another. I think we should listen to and enjoy music based on this truth. Do any of us spend time listening to music just to compare? I don't think so. > peace
Yo I know it's been 7 years, but since you mentioned Sigur Ros, you should listen to the album Departure Songs by the group We Lost the Sea. It's definitely different but also I feel like it kinda fits that mood.
I feel the same way about the titular track.
Trve fact: if it ain't Burzum it's bullpucky.
You said it. Idk why I'm here. Let's go home
It's fucking crazy that my old time friends and I are having a 10 years anniversary listening party for this album next year. Like ten years have almost passed since it's release, friends and I being 14 back then - and taking this into early adult-hood. I still listens to this album weekly.
how’d it go
@@syremintheflesh It went well, just ate snacks and drank lemonade, listened to the album at my place, then we went for a walk by a lake in the city and smoked a doink while listening to a few tracks out there.
Man I wish I had friends that I could have over for a listening party. I have friends but they don’t care enough about music, let alone metal music to be down for something like that.
Angels in Corpse paint. This is why I watch and listen to you. I love you
Still holds up, Sunbather has a timeless sound.
Found out about this album in the last few days. It's MBV doing a metal record. And I'm perfectly ok with that. One of top albums of the year
Great review man! You are so on point! This is how music should be reviewed!
I wonder what he thinks of this album nowadays, definitely one of the most polarizing metal albums of the past decade, I love this honestly

Smooth, sultry voice, great review, subscribed.
This new wave of alternative black metal is restoring my faith in metal in general.
Great, great, great review. You're right on point with your likening to GYBE and EITS.
Suddenly, you bring up one of my all time favorite bands. envy. Truly one of the greatest of all time as far as this listener is concerned. So much brilliance it stings. The same can be said for Mono and Toe. But I digress.
I don't use the "emo" and "screamo" monikers, but your review is spot on. I have to disagree with your opinion on the final track, but I respect it. The Pecan Tree is my favorite track, yet Dream House is a masterstroke.
this album was fantastic. everyone is so upset about what genre it is defined by... that doesnt matter. its a great album.
agreed. you dont gotta categorize everything into one specific genre. this album is amazing.
I really enjoy this album, but I don't understand how this is black metal. I would call post rock with some black metal and ambient influences. I just don't see how you can call this bands main genre black metal.
i agree with you on this. they're a melting pot of influences but i feel as if they are more post-rock/metal than black metal. i feel they have much more in common with post rock bands like explosions in the sky and god speed! your black emperor and even hardcore bands like converge. i enjoy this album very much and i feel the only downfall of this album is its unanswered genre placement
RateYourMusic officially lists the genre as Blackgaze, which is (as the name suggests) a hybrid of black metal and shoegaze. I think that's the best way of describing the sound. It's definitely not black metal and I don't think they were trying to market it as such. Look at the band live and you see they totally ditch the average black metal look... they perform in sneakers and name brand tanktops.
Jimmy Russels fuck the spikes and paint shit. Chuck from Death did it right. Cowboy boots with wife beater one day or white shirt with short jeans and slippers the other.
TheJeffum Don't forget the cat shirts.
Who actually cares? Just listen.
Dreamhouse is one of my all time favorite songs, any genre. Full stop. Incredibly emotional. Very few compositions have made me feel the way that song does, it is Wagner, Bach, Beethoven. Its that good. I absolutely love it and cannot wait to see them again live.
Album of the year in my opinion.
glad you love it that much, buddy.

Why no mention of the clearly heavy shoegaze influence???
Well he listed blackgaze in the genre list.
If it ain't burzum it's bullpucky.
Words of wisdom.
Unless its Funeral Fog by Mayhem, which uses to feature Mr. Varg. :)
Dude, the way you talk about music is a symphony in itself.
Sunbather is an awesome album. It reminds of of a weird mix of My Bloody Valentine, and early Underoath (particularly the song Alone In December) with more technical drums. I personally liked Windows, but then again I'm a big fan of post rock and downtempo. Great review Anthony !
I am very pleasantly surprised at how positively he reviewed this
6:25 god, I love this part. You basically explain why this record manages to combine so many influences in a way that makes sense, because they all have that passion in common and the resulting album is one of the most passionate and beautiful albums ever. One of my favs
This should be a 10/10
yo!
Yo
I like how he always has appropriate albums in the back according to who he's reviewing
I like Deafheaven, a lot. Truly, I do.
I can't help but feel like a LOT of the hate for them is "because they're not black metal." But I don't think they are necessarily trying to be, I think they're just taking elements from music they like, some of which just happen to be from black metal. The charge that they are trying to be black metal and "redefine the genre", etc, is a charge that's always lobbed at them but I've NEVER heard them express. Putting words in their mouth essentially. I have never heard them in an interview, say they're "trying to reinvent the genre," or whatever stupid shit people accuse them of. For someone who's listened to them for awhile, they just seem like they're making music they like.
And I like it! I think the production sounds good, I think the album flows well, has good textural qualities, it's unique, and memorable. But hey, if you genuinely don't like them, that's cool, my dude.
how is pecan tree a disappointing closer? is combines a lot of the same feelings and sounds from the album, sure, but whats the issue with that? its an incredibly well done closing track that opens up with utter harshness then closes with the indie rock-like influence a lot of the album has. it makes you look back on the experience you had in total dismay, which is exactly what a closing track is to do. and windows is an incredibly effective interlude, especially because of its placement in between the totally ear-gasmic vertigo and the pecan tree. the combination of windows to pecan tree sort of reminds me of static off LYSFLATH, with an unsettling first half and total eargasm in the second, just happens to be split between two songs. even with the gripes you have i think the score should've been significantly higher. it's a masterpiece.
@theneedledrop thanks for the review of this album, I threw it on at work on spotify a couple months ago, blew my friggin' mind.
Nothing is more equally sad and hilarious than people that still whine about classifying types of music in the year 2013. Ugh lol...WHY DO PEOPLE STILL WHINE ABOUT THIS. IT'S 2. 0. 1. 3.
waah wahhh 'GRR THIS IS NOT BLACK METAL.' Whoooooooo fuckin' caaaaaaarrrres.
Dude, it will never change. It's 2017 now and nothing has changed. In fact I think it got worse, people are getting even more ignorant and the typical black/white view is spreading.
2021 here, nothing changed
2025 now, and there's nothing new under the sun
Slowly becoming one of my favorite albums of the year, but just behind Dillinger and Autechre. I'm pretty sure Dream House/Irresistible is one of my favorite tracks this year, though. The segue in between the two is just so seamless, it's hard to consider these pieces two separate tracks. Great review, btw.
this album is like if Zao wrote their music in major keys with Godspeed You Black Emperor
Great bands you mentioned, but I'm not seeing a correlation at all.
Good call. Always nice to hear a Zao reference.
i really enjoy the lyrics on this album, i wish you would have mentioned this aspect at least once in your review fantano
This album is beautiful
I love how you have bands you relate to this band, that you mentioned in the video, in the background, like Diadem of 12 stars. Amazing review, thanks for another band to look into, will be spreading this around.
"If it ain't Burzum, its bull pucky" Greatest quote from Cal ever
The outros to these reviews get me all giggly everytime!
nothin worst than metal purests.
From 1:53/1:59 and on, the diction you threw in there and just the way this is spoken in general is like I'm listening to slam poetry. Idk, it's the little things I guess. Bomb review.
This album is amazing.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this album! I always find the marriage of black metal and shoe-gaze to be a beautiful one!
Pecan Tree not on fave tracks?
EDIT: I thought it was a great closer, not anticlimatic - but opinions are opinions.
+GINSHINKZL s Damn, right now that's my favorite Deafheaven song.
The peacn tree is the song that made me a Deafheaven fan..the breakdown into the ending is just perfect!!!..
I love how there are way more clueless hipsters bitching about metal fans than actual metal fans in the comments
+Ivan Malek Well this isn't exactly a metal channel now is it?
Just because of the pink cover hipsters will bow for it
THIS is exactly what I think every time this band comes up in conversation. Deafheaven fans seem pretty defensive. Must be tough.
Don't worry, I hate all of the above (and you) equally.
aikighost I mean, its a music channel for virtually every type of music listener
Just a quick defense of how the band ended "The Pecan Tree". The band's choice to fade this track out stood out to me as well considering none of the other longer songs close this way. But the album's main thematic image is, of course, the sun (and the blinding illumination that comes with it) so the choice to fade out on the album's last track evokes the sun setting bringing things to a fitting conclusion.
I've gotta wonder why they bothered writing lyrics for this album.
The lyrics are actually one of the best parts about the album.
For people that ask that same question, you can get a feel for a song from the instruments. The “unobtainable words in the noise we call vocals” will give you something to relate to even further or even open the eyes of someone missing the meaning before hand. Enjoyable nonthee less without lyrics. Yet I can see many listeners with a gleam in their eyes once they make sense of the nonsense.

Holy shit I’ve never thought about that.
Vertigo makes me melt. AMAZING track.
I've been into metalcore and hardcore for about ten years but I've never delved into black metal. Is it normal for modern black metal to use pretty chords and play post-rock (explosions in the sky) kind of riffs? I'm honestly asking because I don't know. If yes, then I'd love to know more bands. If no, I think it's a fucking brilliant, ballsy, and beautiful direction, even if it's not black metal!
No, this is post-black metal. Actually, even closer to shoegaze than black metal.
***** My sincere compliments: excellent example of a synthetic intro to a subject. One question: how about Altar Of Plagues? For what I've heard so far, they sound equally interesting, and again, one more example where black metal is just one of the starting points for a more complex artistic outcome.
Fabio Patanè Altar of Plagues is kinda like that but has more black metal influence than Deafheaven.
Andrew Edelson Message received. Thank you.

YES I so agree with your comment. When I first heard the album I was not really so amazed as everyone else seems to be not because I dont consider it good, but because I had already heard the meshed sound in other bands. It felt really familiar to me, in a very pleasing way of course
