Deafheaven's vocalist on the meaning of "Dream House": After Roads was completed, I moved in with my mom to go to school for a bit and just chill out because life was really hectic. She lives in such a beautiful town-- she moved there a few years after I moved out-- but I got really depressed in this bourgeois, all-white seaside community. So one day I skipped class drove around and I just saw this girl in the nicest house, and she was just laying there, and I was totally overcome with immense depression. It looked so nice, and I was in that “what the fuck am I doing with my life?” mood at the time. I had a notepad with me, and the first half of that song was jotted down right then." "Like, on “Dream House”, that conversation is really a conversation I had with this girl I was totally in love with. I was really hammered one night and was texting her, like, “How are you?” She’s like, “I’m dying.” And I was like, “Is it blissful?” She said, “like a dream.” And I said, “I want to dream.“ It sounded nice at the time. So I wrote that text conversation down, and two years later, when I was working on that song, I thought it fit because it sums up the contrast between this big, beautiful ending and this big, tragic ending." Dream House was already one of my favorite songs of all time from the sound alone but once you understand the lyrics it hits on a whole different level.
Yes definitely a bright eyes album please....then cursive's ugly organ. I don't think he's done anything from saddle creek records yet. It's a gold mine for fine music.
Once again Smags proves his channels inclusivity, Soundtracks for the blind, songs for the deaf and now another added to the list. This man is a trailblazer for people who are missing some of their senses. Suggestion (I hope you’re system of a DOWN to listen to these): SOAD - Hypnotize/Mezmerize
I gotta recommend Symbolic by Death. Its such a damn good album that has some of the most awesome drumming, and guitar work I've heard in a metal album and absolutely fire solos as well. The lyrics are also something that become really interesting and also oddly relatable in some places.
Man I would LOVE for you to review The Lack Long After by Pianos Become The Teeth. A devastatingly beautiful homage to the lead singer's father who died of Multiple Sclerosis. One of my fave albums ever made for sure
13:10 funny that you say that because in recent interviews vocalist George Clarke has a very relaxing speaking voice lol 13:14 there's a video on youtube of this guy demonstrating what pedals to use to get the effects used on To Here Knows When off of Loveless that Kerry McCoy uses as reference!
I think you’d be in to mogwai bro, their debut album young team is a post rock classic for sure. Crazy how good sunbather sounds still after 10 years as well, definitely stood the test of time.
I haven't even listened to this album myself yet but I just had to see how he'd react to the Black metal espue vocal style. Glad he really liked it though
So, I was just in my car and I listened to M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us again. That's a pretty great album. Did I mention that? Can only recommend it.
I've noticed that you like guitar solos and melodies, so I'm gonna recommend Baroness, specifically their album Purple! They love super melodic, dual guitar solos and I think you'd really like it. Also it doesn't hurt there's some great riffs on there as well
definitely have to listen to this LP. It appeared in a poll before but i really recommend you Sprain - The Lamb as Effigy. Very noisy experimental rock album.
I would love it if you checked out one of my all time favorite bands ISIS. Oceanic and Panopticon are two albums i would recommend the most. (Also Weezer when?)
Brother Smags, you are spoiling me lately. First the Parannoul album and now Sunbather. If you enjoyed Deafheaven you should definitely check out Alcest's "Écailles de lune" and "Souvenirs d'un autre monde", they are the pioneers of this style. As for Parannoul, definitely check out one of "After the Magic" or "After the Night". The first is a studio album with a similar style as "To see the next part of the dream" but less depressing and more hopeful. "After the Night" sees Parannoul teaming up with other underground Korean artists to play a live show, and in a way it feels like the culmination of his character arc, going from a self described useless shut-in to the forerunner of a new wave of Korean rock music.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Blue Screen Life by Pinback, an indie band that makes chill music that sounds like Modest Mouse meets The Beatles. Love your reactions, you give every album a fair listen and analysis!
I am gonna drop a recommendation in the metal subgenres: Panopticon - Kentucky. Beautiful album that combines bluegrass elements with black metal and imo something everyone who is into heavier music should listen to.
i really wanted to get into this one, I'm currently enjoying it! great recent recommendations, keep up the amazing work Smags! Here some recommendations: Cocteau Twins - Milk & Kisses Dean Blunt - BLACK METAL 2
Glad these you’re listening to these albums so you can get more used to screaming vocals (screamo when…) Anyways, here r sum recs (I need to see one of these) Title Fight - Floral Green Alex G - DSU Red House Painters - Down Colorful Hill Cap’n Jazz - Analphabetapothology Circa Survive - Juturna
You definitely need to check out "Souvenirs d'un autre monde" by Alcest, its a french blackgaze band (pretty sure its the first blackgaze band) It's a really great album and I think you would enjoy it! As for Deafheaven you should give "Ordinary Corrupt Human Love" a listen. I prefer the sound of that album over Sunbather and if you enjoyed Sunbather you would enjoy that one as well.
u have a trillion recs BUT if you like this sound i highly suggest u check out departure songs by we lost the sea, super cool Australian band and after they lost their singer to suicide they made that album in memory to him, i dont know if we've ever seen you react to a almost completely instrumental album so it would be fun to see how you feel about it! keep being awesome smags
still loving the videos my guy a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
This might be an unpopular opinion but I MUCH prefer their later album, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. It’s in my top 5 favorite albums of all time and is one of the most beautiful albums I think I’ll ever hear exploring how difficult it is to connect with each other and see each other for who we really are

I'm on my KNEES I'm BEGGING for Wide awake Its Morning. I'm CRYING and THROWING UP
Shidding and farding everywhere
just got a bit into LIFTED and it sounds amazing so far
@@feli6277 the zoomers need bright eyes
Digital Ash was more interesting imo, but I find all BE stuff sounds kinda cringey now

"i'm dying"
"is it blissful?"
"it's like a dream."
"i want to dream."
i would definitely say it's being optimistic (to use your term) about dying.
I gotta recommend Symbolic by Death. Its such a damn good album that has some of the most awesome drumming, and guitar work I've heard in a metal album and absolutely fire solos as well. The lyrics are also something that become really interesting and also oddly relatable in some places.
this is probably the best time to recommend you "I Want to Be There" by Sadness if you ever want to listen to something similar to "Sunbather"
100% agree. Both are in my top 10 albums ever
holy shith e needs to do this
What I always loved about Vertigo, is that the song somehow feels like falling or spiralling out of control. Like when you get vertigo.
Old poll option: Can - Tago Mago. One of the greatest albums EVER.
You should review more ambient albums. I highly recommend Harmony in Ultraviolet by Tim Hecker.
I'm literally wearing a hoodie with this album cover rn, it's one of my all time favorites, it introduced me to both black metal and shoegaze
if you want more shoegaze i'd recommend Blu Rev by Alvvays, all of the songs are soul-crushing (in the good way)
Hopefully he goes down the deafheaven rabbithole. OCHL and New Bermuda are great in their own right
i love you smags. your content makes my day, and you’re reviewing my favorite album this is like a dream come true
Thank You!
@@smags1082 it’s so refreshing to see actually insightful music content! i’m glad you loved sunbather
This album will go down as one of the best releases ever in the 2010s. Just an incredible musical journey from start to finish.
George Clanton - Slide is an album i think youd love!

You need to do I'm wide awake its morning by Bright Eyes. Such a depressingly beautiful album.
I think you’d be in to mogwai bro, their debut album young team is a post rock classic for sure. Crazy how good sunbather sounds still after 10 years as well, definitely stood the test of time.

Super similar to this but way more emotional
I would love it if you checked out one of my all time favorite bands ISIS. Oceanic and Panopticon are two albums i would recommend the most.

Day 10 of asking Smags to listen to:
Portishead - Third
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland
i dont know if you have already listened to it but Relationship of Command is top tier emo and has some crazy drum and guitar work
I am gonna drop a recommendation in the metal subgenres: Panopticon - Kentucky. Beautiful album that combines bluegrass elements with black metal and imo something everyone who is into heavier music should listen to.
One of my absolute favorite albums, 10/10 pick
i really wanted to get into this one, I'm currently enjoying it! great recent recommendations, keep up the amazing work Smags!
