I remember when I was 18 years old I tried to buy a car with cash. Called my “dad” and asked him to help, he said he didn’t have it. But ended up co-signing for a dodge neon, a complete lemon (lol) for 330 per month. I didn’t even have the car 32 day before the engine started giving me problems. And the warranty was only for 30 days 😕I was 18 so my insurance was also around 350. At 18 I was stressed outttttt! And on top of all that my mom decided she wanted to move out and left me with a ton of bills that were behind. 20 years later I still can’t believe they did that to me🤣. If you are a parent please teach your children about finances and how to budget. I got off to a rocky start and made a lot of mistakes. I turn 38 on July 8th but my goal is to be debt free by 40 and I’m almost there.

I have told people this time and time again... practically ANYONE can get approved for VIRTUALLY any car. The dealership will allow you to finance it with them, even if you really can't afford it. WHY you may be asking? ...because they can repossess it if you get behind on the payments. THEN resell it. So they get to keep all of your payments, tidy the car up and then resale it as a Certified Preowned. They will not lose.

muscleunlimited Hes young...I get it. He wanted a nice car. In 2012, I bought a 1999 Volvo S80 for $4,500 and it was beautiful. I was younger and stupider than he was, except in this particular way. I'll tell you, I bought that car because I test drove it and fell in love with it in every possible way...I had absolutely NO care for what anyone else thought of my car..I was pretty sure it was somewhat impressive, but I didn't ultimately care. I loved it and thats all that mattered to me. In the 3 years I had it, I probably put $2,500 in repairs into it. At first, it appears as a $7,000 car, but factor in the savings in insurance and the fact that I sold it for the cost of my repairs, and that car probably cost me $2,500 in total after insurance savings. The true difference between his car and my Volvo is that his car is much newer. Thats THE only difference. Sure...the built in technology too, I guess, but I can upgrade the stereo system in an OLD luxury car too...so he paid $67,500 for a new car smell...but you can buy that smell at Walmart for $2 lmao...I see people in brand new cars...my mom is jealous of them and I feel sorry for them, knowing they probably took out a loan and now have a huge financial obligation that is as new as the car and won't be ending anytime soon.

When it comes to high payments and low incomes, typically what dealerships do to get a deal approved if the credit is good enough is give you a "raise" in order to get the deal approved. So if you make 2k a month and they are trying to get you approved for a payment of 600 a mo, the finance manager would bump the income to maybe 4k a month to have the bank say yes

I honestly learned my lesson, I make 3000 a month and I have a 456 car loan. I have no standing debt anymore thanks to Dave's reality checks since I've been listening to him. I do wish to keep my car and I'm going to try to push a much money into it and work on being debt free by 27, I'm currently 25.

I have truly learned from the experience! Sadly the mortgage crisis happened this way, student loans, credit cards companies, and car loan industry! We see nothing but slaves to debt in America!!

I'm surprised that Dave Ramsey is so perplexed that BMW financial gave him this loan. He was living at home with his parents and showed them little debt, when he took out the loan. It is very possible that someone making $24k/year with no bills can have more discretionary income than someone making $80k/year with a mortgage and many other bills.

I am 27, full time master's student. Own $500 2009 toyota camry with 240k miles. Dress cheap at Ross or Walmart. Make $36k, pay $650 rent, $1500 cash for school and saved $25k so far. No Debt. But, working hard comes with not much social life, some financial stress at the beginning. Also, I am immigrant moved to US 5 years ago with $25 in my pocket. If you are willing to work you will be fine.
