I saw this movie as a child in the 80's and this scene and this song never left me, when a song and a dance transcends age, continents, cultures and even language and speaks to the heart of a 10yr old Black girl in Texas ,who was going through a lot for child, then that song has become immortal just like the rider in the song. This scene is truly one of the most intense in the history of cinema. I think most people are destined to not understand the heart and soul of this scene. Here are the former lovers Mikhail Baryshnikov and Helen Mirren. He left her behind for the chance of freedom, but he didn't just leave her. He didn't give her the choice of fleeing with him. He left the part of himself that was Russian and the part of himself that came from the best ballet company in the world behind. He also left her to deal with the Russian authorities who were to assume she knew of his plans and perhaps assisted him. In this moment that is ballet which is passionate, violent, and angry, they forgive each other. She forgives him for leaving her behind and he forgives her for judging him for wanting to be free. This is breathtaking.

Watching the country music videos of Oliver Anthony made me recall this scene where Baryshnikov dances to a recording of Vysotsky wailing out his frustrations in song. Very memorable scene from a movie I saw once 37 years ago.

If only you had any idea how free Russian people really are and who lives in a bubble.. I know plenty of Americans who live here and they all say the same thing, whenever they return to the West to visit they see the real contrast of how little freedom is left there… I met some Americans who just moved here and when we were at a public cafe talking politics or share views on family, religion, etc. they would immediately lower their voice, so that people around wouldn’t hear them, then I’d tell them you’re in Russia, nobody cares (even if you speak negatively of Putin, despite what the Western media says). It’s just like the people that had no freedom and were afraid to state their opinions in the USSR, it’s the same in the US now - if you don’t follow the narrative.. you risk losing your job, family, get canceled or even go to prison. The worlds have switched since the 1980s. I’ve traveled to nearly 40 countries, lived in the West for 18 years and returned to Russia.

Misha is the greatest ballet dancer ever. This is the finest dance , created by Twyla Tharp. The Young Man and Death, at the opening of the film, is another of Barishnikov's masterpieces of dance.
This is emotional AF and not because she weeps but that Dance and Music is intense...when he is looking at the camera. Feels like he looks trough it. Wow
“I want you to hear me”. He dances what words can not express. Polunin is technically beautiful. Baryshnikov is emotionally beautiful. One only has to observe his face. He puts his entire being into his dance.
the song, Koni Priveredlivie (Untamed Horses) is about facing your mortality. The man in the song is telling the horses to slow down, slow down, not rush so fast into the grave, before he has a chance to finish his song.

The main thing I think during this dance is, while he is doing the back roll (I’m not a dancer, I have no idea if it’s a specific position or move) is damn, that would feel so good. This dance & song is so passionate & furious. The movements perfectly convey the emotion of the song, even not knowing the translation.

I saw this movie as a child in the 80's and this scene and this song never left me, when a song and a dance transcends age, continents, cultures and even language and speaks to the heart of a 10yr old Black girl in Texas ,who was going through a lot for child, then that song has become immortal just like the rider in the song. This scene is truly one of the most intense in the history of cinema. I think most people are destined to not understand the heart and soul of this scene. Here are the former lovers Mikhail Baryshnikov and Helen Mirren. He left her behind for the chance of freedom, but he didn't just leave her. He didn't give her the choice of fleeing with him. He left the part of himself that was Russian and the part of himself that came from the best ballet company in the world behind. He also left her to deal with the Russian authorities who were to assume she knew of his plans and perhaps assisted him. In this moment that is ballet which is passionate, violent, and angry, they forgive each other. She forgives him for leaving her behind and he forgives her for judging him for wanting to be free. This is breathtaking.

This is one of my favorite movies that I had to buy it. I love watching Mikhail and Gregory dancing. The best dance duos ever.
I was so little when I first saw this, and it left it's mark on my soul. I realize now I love Tom Waits because his voice reminds me of it.

An important Russian interior which remained to be found prior to filming was an auditorium to double for Leningrad’s Kirov Theatre (Mariinsky Theatre, since January 16, 1992 - St Petersburg). Eventually, it was decided that the San Carlos Theatre in Lisbon, Portugal, was the closest match in western Europe to the Kirov Theatre in terms of ambience and baroque elegance, a decision with which star Baryshnikov agreed. The theatre at the time had been in continuous use for over two hundred years, and was a cherished symbol of Lisbon’s rebirth after the catastrophic earthquake and tidal wave that destroyed the city in 1755. Over the years, it has been host to dance companies, but is primarily an opera house, where Callas, Gobbi, Scotti, Gigli, Scippa, Sutherland and other greats have sung.
The theater is actually in Lisbon.

I finally found an English translation of this - so incredibly powerful and fits exactly for what his character is going through in the movie. It's absolutely perfect, as is the dancing.

Watching the country music videos of Oliver Anthony made me recall this scene where Baryshnikov dances to a recording of Vysotsky wailing out his frustrations in song. Very memorable scene from a movie I saw once 37 years ago.
i hope some day that the russian people will be free. they have so much to offer and some day they shall. until then, we have glimpses like this. thank you to the great M.B. for sharing with us this dance and that music.

If only you had any idea how free Russian people really are and who lives in a bubble.. I know plenty of Americans who live here and they all say the same thing, whenever they return to the West to visit they see the real contrast of how little freedom is left there… I met some Americans who just moved here and when we were at a public cafe talking politics or share views on family, religion, etc. they would immediately lower their voice, so that people around wouldn’t hear them, then I’d tell them you’re in Russia, nobody cares (even if you speak negatively of Putin, despite what the Western media says). It’s just like the people that had no freedom and were afraid to state their opinions in the USSR, it’s the same in the US now - if you don’t follow the narrative.. you risk losing your job, family, get canceled or even go to prison. The worlds have switched since the 1980s. I’ve traveled to nearly 40 countries, lived in the West for 18 years and returned to Russia.

I wish i could understand his words but his voice, his howl, it is beyond words. I remember seeing this seen when i was 13 and it had been with me for 34 years. Together they are transcendent.

Que pienso de Visotski???
