Yngwie is such a polarizing "love him or hate him" guitarist. Some people say he's nothing but speed, and doesn't play with any soul. Others say his talent speaks for itself and he doesn't have to prove anything to anybody.

    • @epic103

The latter is the truth. Yngwie is so good it's frightening.

While what he does is interesting to players, it's too much information for the casual listener. He's respected by his peers, but he'll never write a hit song. He's also very derivative of Paganini.

People who know how to play guitar are the ones saying he plays with soul. People who don't understand guitar are the other ones.

@@pastorofmuppets22 - he has written many hit songs. Rising Force, I'll See the Light Tonight, Dreaming, I Am a Viking, Heaven Tonight etc... Yngwie got a lot of airplay on the radio and MTV in the 1980's. In my opinion I don't think Yngwie gets enough credit for all his great albums and songs. Even if people don't like his last few albums he still has an impressive catalog of amazing songs and albums over the years. He has an incredible body of work. He's the only "shredder" that actually writes good songs, and his vibrato and bending is second to none.

I recommend you listen to Yngwie's work with the band Alcatrazz. It's got some of my favorite playing by him, especially General Hospital and Hiroshima Mon Amour.
From his solo stuff, the album Odyssey has the most commercial sounding songs, but they're still pretty good. Rising Force, Riot in The Dungeons, Heaven Tonight, Crystal Ball .. pretty much the whole album.

Yngwie Malsteen's early records were so sonically groundbreaking... they don't get enough attention or credit. This came out in 1985 from the 2nd album 'Marching out'... the guitar playing was out-of-this-world... the vocals were incredible... the double bass drumming... It was like Deep Purple ramped up a few notches.

Malmsteen is a shredder! Classical music influences. Very fast and technical. Lex gets it.

Fantastic guitar player...that being said,he'll never write a hit song. While what he does is interesting to musicians, it's too much information for the average listener. Joe Satriani knew this, and realized at the beginning, you can't blaze scales and make it scream for 3 hours to a live audience. Kids back then would discover him and bring their guitar to my class wanting me to show them how to play his stuff. I'm actually kind of glad he phazed out, lol. I could show them enough to get them through it,but it would always make my hand and forearm cramp up.

Brian May was introducing Steve Vai onto the stage back in the 90s as, the genius, the master of Space Age guitar. Joe Satriani is much easier to figure out, generally more melodic. Hey guys what's up! Yngwie is a one-of-a-kind. And innovator. Basically created the neoshred guitar movement. And inspired generations of guitar players. I hear people try to play like Yngwie but I don't hear anybody do it. Every single note has meaning, even though he's playing a million miles an hour. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!

Everyone always reacts to Malmsteen 1st album. His next 3 albums are way better imo. Marching Out , Trilogy, and Odyssey. so good.

Jig a boos NEVER comment on the instrumental musical talent because they simply don’t have it. That’s why they completely ignore it and only talk about the meanings of songs. And they’re barely smart enough to figure that out.

Classical Metal. Not to be confused with metal classics. Although Yngwie's Rising Force is, in my opinion, a true metal classic highlighting Classical Metal.
    Unfortunately, not good moshing music.

No one rips the guts.out of a guitar like Yngwie. I saw him only once live 25 years ago, and I can tell you that what your hearing is real. The man plays so fast if you BLINK you've missed it. He's studied classical music since childhood, and learned to play it on guitar. He's actually played classical on guitar with symphonies. He's been overlooked in the rock world while others received accolades, but no one can play a guitar like he can. Another guitarist of this level is Michael Angelo Batio.

Yngwie Malmsteen is a paradox to me: how could such an amazing guitarist make such crappy music? It doesn't make sense. I love the musician but can't stand his music. Not one song - not one - is worth preserving for future generations. But I love your reaction. Thanks for posting it.
