      To James Davies: It is refreshing to know that being in the UK you can fairly and personally choose your United States sports teams, and not be psychologically holed-up in a region or city that you cannot mentally separate yourself from, lest you seem as if an outcast with your friends, students, or co-workers. ------------------------ It is akin to having fewer options to venture and reside in neighborhoods outside of "one's own" and are stuck with their cultures, music, and entertainment. If you choose a topic out of bounds, you are ostracised. In the States, it's heartbreaking. I am a UK expat to the US and wasn't used to this and still am not. Even London's Brixton and Notting Hill, back in the day were not black neighborhoods.

      I think the US should indoctrinate the children in other countries to play baseball when they're little lol. Joking. But I played baseball growing up here in the US. I played in "minor league" 12 years old, and then in Little League (13-14) or so years old and then when I was 15 "senior league" I think it was called. And I liked certain MLB players during that time. Honestly as an adult I stopped following the sport but this past week I've been watching Japanese player Ichiro and been looking at Japanese videos about baseball etc. The Japanese really like the MLB it seems like.

    When I was a university student in London fifty years ago we went to Regent's Park to practive some baseball drills like hitting fungos where one tosses the ball up and hits it to a fielder. The first time me mate hit the ball it went on a line and hit this poor woman walking down on the path - she collapsed like a Monty Python sketch as the ball went straight up in the air. We had to expain that she had not been hit by a cricket ball but by a 'soft ball" though didn't think it felt very soft to her

There was a league but it only lasted a decade or so. Anyway, I'm a big cricket fan, would like to get into baseball, so will watch the games. But there are one day internationals (about 7 and half hours) and T20 which lasts for 3 hours approx, which is about the same time as baseball. That will probably become the most popular version because it's shorter and more action packed.

  • @RhinoXpress
    @RhinoXpress 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    An mlb team for britain would most definitely help baseballs popularity there. The problem is Britain is too far from the u.s. Just flying to the east coast of the u.s. to play games is a 5 hour flight from britain. So you can only imagine how long of a flight a west coast u.s. trip will be from Britain. Then you add 162 games ontop of that, where half of those games are road games and it just becomes too much. Maybe when commercial flights go super sonic and flight times are a fraction of what they are now, then it maybe possible to have international teams. until then, i don't see any country outside of north america getting a mlb team anytime soon.

      Those, and many more from the "British Invasion" like Deep Purple, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark V, heck even Queen are some of the best bands ever BUT they wouldn't have come to exist without the MUSIC that DID come from the U.S. like Rock n' Roll, blues and country. That would be a more accurate way to state it, because that's what we actually gave them and gave to the world. Led Zeppelin and the other fantastic bands needed to have the music first to write/play/sing like they did and still do + their enormous talent and musical skills.

  • @hotwax9376
    @hotwax9376 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Correction: it was actually the British who gave America baseball, not the other way around. Baseball was based on numerous bat and ball sports that were previously played in Britain, most notably rounders.
    The way I see it, it's pretty unlikely that baseball, Major League or otherwise, will ever be successful in Britain. What the high attendance numbers from the recent MLB game in London won't tell you is that most of those people were Americans who carved enough time out of their schedules and found enough money to make the trip across the pond and see the game in person. Same goes for football; the only football Brits care about is soccer, which is why the NFL is wasting its time holding games over there.

Also all the USA military bases in the UK they could help support British baseball, Even let us use their baseball pitches for practice.

      there are factual errors in your statement, first, baseball is popular in other countries. i could list at least about 10 where it is very big other than the USA. Second, basketball is extremely popular around the world. Third, ice hockey is popular in parts of Europe but it is not truly an American sport. It is a niche sport in the USA that is very popular as a youth sport in limited areas such as Minnesota and Boston. so then we are down to American football and I can assure you that most people are very aware that it is not popular outside of North America but I can also assure you that nobody cares about that. Whatever. The NFL wanting to push itself on the UK is stupid in my opinion.

    • @cpmenninga
      @cpmenninga 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A key problem I see is that American sports have become mostly spectator sports. Sports like soccer and rugby are actually fun to play. I think that’s why basketball has had some success because it’s fun and accessible. Watching a game isn’t as fun as playing it and why would you be interested if you’ve never played.

    • @PerthTowne
      @PerthTowne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a huge baseball fan, and I've never played. Being a spectator is a different way of experiencing a sport, but no less enjoyable. Baseball is different because there are 162 games during the regular season, and the teams play EVERY DAY. So it's total immersion from spring training in March through post-season play in October.

    It's simply a matter of which sports you grow up with. Baseball is quite different from many constant action sports. Baseball is about strategy and skill more so then raw physical prowess. It's about the pitcher vs. the batter. It's about building to a crescendo. It's calm enough to have a conversation, but also explosive and violent enough to have a hard ball moving faster then most people have driven. It's a thinking mans sport. In parts of the US baseball is a bit like a religion. The Japanese have taken it as their own for a long time now. I find it interesting how the game has evolved slightly differently in Japan, yet still very much the same game.

      Kristopher Rice 2 things have been associated with baseball as long as it’s been around: sunflower seeds and chewing tobacco. Almost every person that’s ever played baseball at any YMCA, middle school, high school, or church in America has likely been offered a pinch of chewing tobacco by a team mate that they stole off their father. And you will never see a baseball dugout that doesn’t have sunflowers seeds in it. Both of those things require spitting out at some point and that’s why spitting is a part of baseball culture

    • @dbrev10
