    Many tears ago, as a teenager, I deer hunted with a Remington 81. The rifle was borrowed from my father's best friend who taught me how it worked. He was generous with ammunition when I test fired. This went on for about 4 seasons. I was/am so lucky to have had that experience. Thanks for this video.

    I've always been intrigued with the model 8 ever since reading a book about Ralph Edwards of Lonesome Lake. He used one in 35 Rem to provide for his family in the remote BC wilderness, ran a trap line and killed many grizzlies with it in the early part of the 20th century.

    If I remember correctly, I believe I have seen a number of photo's of police officers using Rem. 8 or 81's during the 20's and 30's in shootouts with well-known bank robbers and other miscreants. In fact, I remember seeing police with one or both of these models at the shootings of Bonnie and Clyde.

    That Remington model 8 chambered in 35 Remington is what Texas Ranger Frank Hamer used to kill Bonnie and Clyde Barrow . His was the police issued model which had a detachable box magazine, that was equipped with a banana style or drum magazine. If you’ve ever seen that car on display ( I have ) it is riddled with.35 caliber holes , it’s quite a scary sight to see . I’d love to have that rifle there , what a gem ! Best deer rifle in the woods if you ask me.

But, other than that the Remington was unique and interesting to shoot. I agree with you, at reasonable ranges the open iron sights were accurate.

    Great segment on an interesting rifle! I inherited my grandfather's 81 which is identical to the last one you featured right down to the side-saddle scope mount which I don't care for. It throws the balance off and makes it less pleasant to carry. It's also tricky to train your brain to align it correctly when shouldering for a shot. But Grandpa was quite proficient with it and took many whitetails including his world record contender. I've never fired it but I might dust it off this fall and take a deer in his memory

  • @rdrrr

    A remarkably attractive rifle. Utilitarian in appearance but very sleek and the proportions are perfect.
    The AK's safety lever is remarkably similar to the Model 8's.
    Regarding your comment on "supreme efficiency" and hunting with god-knows-what - made me think of punt guns. Commonly used in Europe as well as the USA, usually by ordinary folks to put food on the table, although European aristocrats sometimes hunted with punt guns for sport, too. Holland & Holland made punt guns, to their usual high standard of fit and finish. Imagine the expense...

    • @rdrrr
      @rdrrr 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      .35 Rem is pretty comparable to .30-30. Pretty steep rainbow trajectory. You _can_ make hits at 200 yards but you'll be aiming pretty high. 100 yards is much more reasonable.
      As you say, it's a brush gun, not a precision rifle. Attaching an 8-power scope is a bit silly.
      The Model 8 was also available in .300 Savage. Now _that_ would let you reach out and touch things - although I imagine .300 Savage from a long-recoil action would beat your shoulder up pretty bad.

    Hey Mike, It’s me again. Another fine educational and entertaining video. I’ve known about and been fascinated by the models 8 and 81 for many years but have never been able to obtain one. I’d have to have one of each with the 8 in 35 Remington and the 81 in 300 Savage. I’ve already got 35 Remington in a 336 Marlin and 300 Savage in a 99F so very familiar with both cartridges. I have collections of Remington model 11, 11-48 and 1100 shotguns. The 11 and 11-48 shotguns, which were Remington’s licensed versions of the Browning are subject to having collapsed magazine tube recoil/barrel return spring and collapsed main action spring which is located in the butt stocks of those shotguns. Those collapsed springs can make the recoil in those shotguns seem vicious. When they are corrected with new springs the recoil sensation is really not bad even in 12 or 16 gauge. I wonder if the big spring in the 8 and 81 could be suffering the same condition and causing the complaints about recoil. The 35 Remington is a mild recoils cartridge in lightweight lever action rifles and 300 Savage is usually a little lighter than 308 in any action rifle of the same weight. Just a thought. Happy hunting!

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good thoughts and thanks for sharing. Could be the springs. Also, since the barrel , spring, bolt etc... are in motion upon firing - the rifle is much lighter; when the barrel and recoiling parts reach the end of their travel they stop and "hit" the "lighter" rifle and hence the shooter. Just some thoughts.

The round was so good that it became the .308 Winchester and in fact I make my .300 savage rounds from .308 military brass (so there is no .308 headstamp) shooting the gun? LOL.. it is like shooting a pogo stick IMO... accuracy is in the one inch range at 50 yards which is about as far as I want to shoot paper at with open sights. And yeah I have an auto 5 and set the rings for heavy loads but they still work ok with lighter loads.

    If there has not been edited to the gun laws over here since last i checked, since this June they are only for collector and ipsc/ reserve officers
    Reason why is that they have handguard and was made for leo also with higher magazine capacity than 10 shots also
    Win 1907 amd so ,they are still hunting legal
    Other semis been banned also sadly, even .22s with abive 10 shot magazine ,like Ruger 10-22 many others, ,even tube fed ,
    Sad for all .
    Some rifles bought before the date can be had still,others is turnin or sell abroad, or edit status on to collector or match
