    Carrot stretches work a treat on the ground, ask him to bring his neck to his shoulder and between his legs and lots of open rein turning in the saddle, also asking your horse to bring his head round your knee as well. Another good thing, albeit a little pricey is having a physio work on your horse. Great for back and neck stiffness. Kinda like we go for a massage for a stiff neck. There are other ways to sort out a stiff neck but a massage is always better. Most OTTBs will be stiff to one side.

    And is this an actual ottb? Could you make a clinic with an ottb that is right off the track. I mean I would pay to see the problems pop up as you go and assessing them throughout the video

    We are working through all 3 problems right now. It was good to get some positive, cheerful and sound advice!

    Horses at the track always learn both leads. They use the right lead through the straightaways and the left through turns so that they don't tire out. (We train racehorses and "break" babies and retrain as well. My OTTB's usually pick up their leads better than my regular riding horses). They are also less spooky because they have been there done that seen it all. At least all the ones I've worked with!!

      Do you have any tips on how I can teach mine to stop? I've tried half halts, seat aids, vocal commands. She was a puller when she was on the track so she has a hard mouth as well so rein aids are just a pain.

    I ride an OTTB at lessons and he is a hunter now, but he loves to charge at the jumps and leap over them. So my teacher is having me make him stop sometimes after jumps to get him to slow down and think about them. So far it has been working great

    I've retrained quite a few ottb's now and I'm completely addicted. Some fantastic tips here. I would also recommend an equine sports massage to help loosen up their back and generally get everything nice and loose. I would also recommend doing lots of desensitising groundwork. It really helps to build up trust. Can't wait for part 3 :D

    For leg yeilding, i started my OTTB by facing the fence, using my hands to keep his shoulder and head straight, i used my leg to move him over. The fence keeps him straight and soon he'll learn that the leg pressure means "over" rather than always forward. Flexing your horses neck on each side, getting the horse to stretch and collect the neck will help as well as making sure you have the horse on the outside rein, working off the inside leg. Doing alot of transitions helps relax my horse :)

    jigging is kinda like a trot in place, and they normally do it when they are stressed, excited or just have a bunch of energy. they are normally pretty tense when they do it. and you have to be careful it doesn't lead to bucking,taking off, or rearing. ive seen jiggy thoroughbreds do all the above when they are at shows. it's kinda hard to explain but it's not a good habit. ive found one rein stops and small serpentines help the horse bend and relax a lil. along with groundwork.

    THB in general tend have bad feet, but often OTTB's have terrible feet so get a good farrier and like Jimmy said use hoof oil all over!!

      My ottb has great hoofs

    • @Seleuce
      @Seleuce 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Zoawesomeshowjumper That's great for you and your horse. However, TB's are known for very often having "flat feet", meaning very low/dropped heels and long toes which flare out. Some families/lines more than others. There is only so much a farrier can do with such hooves, it's the genetic material. Responsible breeders try to improve this common problem, at least in Europe.

    • @anniebananie553
      @anniebananie553 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. Cheap horses to buy, expensive to keep. It's no fault of the horses, but of the breeders. The breed has developed for one thing ONLY- speed. That's it. Not health, not sanity, not sense, not good feet. They're fast. And everything else is generally cruddy.

    • @Seleuce
      @Seleuce 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Annie Peterson The "Speed only" thing is new and most prominent in USA. TB's used to be bred for stamina, robust health and strong bones, too, in the old days. The main problem is that a long, healthy life of the horses is not of interest for breeders of racers today. The horses run young and retire when other breeds start their careers, while in the old days they ran for 6-10 years. The only horses they want to live long now are their studs and breeding mares which spend their lifes unridden on pastures. We truely live in a throw-away-society. :P

    just saying a horse has to switch to the right lead in the stretch of a horse race. it helps them go faster because they take the pressure off the one leg. very useful episode though!

    How do you keep your OTTB slow? I find my OTTB is constantly a speed racer, and it's very difficult to keep him slow and relaxed. Also, he doesn't ever want to bend or turn. How do I fix this issue? He also isn't super supple and dislikes being slowed to a stop. He pulls against the bit and really fights me when I try to get him to halt. What do I do?

    What are some exercises I can do with my girl (Green OTTB) to get her to yield to my legs?? Help! She's still Very green, with only walk/trot on her so far, and I'd like to start doing more canter work, but I don't want to until I can bend her body and get her to relax and use herself, so I can pick up correct leads. Thanks!!

    can anyone help me? i have a ottb who is 7, after she got off the track she just kind of sat for a couple years. she had some people work with her but they didn't always have the time. she is very hostile towards a lot of the horses but is really connected to others. In the trot passing on a far distance she will try to pull to that horse and kick, so in the canter its even harder. she is really stiff in her neck and i have been working on collection and flexing. the worst problem with her is in the canter she will buck and do short rears, she will go really fast and is hard to stop. i can't use the bit because she will buck and rear worse if i pull back to much. its hard and i don't really know much of what to do. i have been trying to turn her with leg in circles and try to bend her as i canter but she still gets really sensitive and bucks. if anyone has suggestions i would be really thankful, i would also like to know how to keep her from being so sour when her friends go off riding ahead of her and she bucks and rears. thanks :)

    Children, one of the big parts to this video: LEG AIDS FIRST and then focus on the head/neck. Possibly my biggest pet peeve is when riders freak out and only focus on the head/neck and don't care what the horse's body is doing
    In fact, a lot of this video applies to all green horses! :]
