in Germany cutting the whiskers of a horse is judged as abuse
The wiskers are a part of the horses body that connects to the brain. idc if it looks "fancy" to cut them. I'm never cutting my horses wiskers

hannah grace I don't know. You just have to whenever you go to shows. Everyone does it when you go to shows. I think it looks better to the judges. I'm not sure if you have to on the western side of things but on the English side, you have to.

And just because others do it or some stupid judges (who seem to care more about looks than about riding - I wouldn't give a f*ck about what these judges say anyway) doesn't make it right!!
There is a reason why clipping horses' whiskers is forbidden in so many countries - here in Germany, we make fun about those who do it - only riders who don't have the riding skills to win the competiton (but enter it anyway) try to impress the judges with "good (and unnatural) looks" ;)
thekleeblaettchen Well. I've had both of my horses long enough that whenever I clip their whiskers they have no issues finding their food in their stall or out in the pasture.
horses need whiskers on their muzzle (what is being clipped off in the video) each whisker leads to a nerve cortex in the horses brain. i have met horses that havent eaten for days due to have their whiskers cut off them. without them they cannot find their way in the dark of judge the depth of what is infront of them (for example some horses i have met would continually put their nose dangerously low in a bucket full of water because they are unaware of how close they are to the water). trimming or cutting whiskers is also banned in many countries but unfortunately is still legal in the us and uk despite how much it can restrict the horse to their normal way of life
I don’t think a horse would be dumb enough to drown themselves in a bu jet of water because they don’t have whiskers. They can still feel??

Yeah, plus the "they can't see in the dark without whiskers" is straight up BS. That doesn't even makes sense. Horses aren't cats. 🤦♀️

omg my grandma braided my tail for me and she was like "can i cut his tail? it would look nicer" and of course i said no. she did it anyway. she cut like half of it off.... -_-

"Pull out GENTLY" Impossible!
There is no horse in the world who likes being pulled. A study showed that every horse has pain and stress during this mane pulling. Just cut it with a scissors or cut it with a comb with a knive attached (look it up, it is amazing!) I use the last one for my Belgian drafthorse.
And pulling out the hair of the tail: Seriously? That again hurts! Just trim or cut. (my Belgian draft doesn't have a tail though, just a bunny fluff)
Never trim the whiskers! Ever! You kind of blind the horse here. He uses them to find food and to feel the difference between kinds of food (in the field).
The bridle path is really nice though. I really need to do that with my horse. I just got her and she needs a trim there.
some horses actually do enjoy having their manes pulled. i know a mare whose lip gets twitchy and she just starts to fall asleep when hers is being pulled. and then of course there are those that are much too reactive to pull it, but not every horse hates having it pulled.
My teacher told me that they don't really have nerves at the base so grabbing the mane doesn't hurt but this*... That's barbaric for no reason. Scissors exist for a reason. This is ridiculous. 🤦♀️
I'm a rider and groom and I take great care and joy in making sure the horses looks great, but I NEVER clip the insides of the ears or muzzle hairs despite of what others may say. I would want them to sense around without any problems with insects, objects, etc or when they are amongst their touchy- feely equine buddies in the pastures. How dare you take that bit of nature away from them for competitive reasons? As for washing, I didn't see any of that unless you count the guy's efforts in the beginning, just don't do that too often because the natural oils in the skin serves a purpose. Where do you think their smell and shine comes from? Don't like any of these things mentioned, then don't do any hands-on activities with animals and visit the petting zoo instead. I do agree with clipping a ear-long bridlepath for it does look tidy and it gives the horse a clean looking head.

Dennet Offerman they clip them for show reasons and to keep them cooler in the summer, they just shave the outsides not the inside. they don't hurt the horse

My horse is a Saddlebred Show Horse. it is common practice to shave the muzzle, and hair in the ears plus bridle path. He stays in a stall during show season and from experience this is the case with many show horses, not just Saddlebreds. I asked my vet and don't some research on the use of whiskers on a horse. at one time they were important because of the need to sense the stuff on the ground but more that the have been domesticated, it does not matter if you keep them or not. as far as the ears, I trim the inside hair and he wears a fly bonnet during the months when the bugs are bad. Next the bridle path, in the show ring is supposed to accentuate the look of the horses neck. the longer you cut it, the longer the neck appears. this is very common amongst Arabian and Saddleseat horses. Each person has a right to do what they feel is the best thing for their horse but dummy criticize others for choosing to do certain grooming techniques because you don't understand the full story behind that particular horse. If you don't know the different standards for each breed then do not critique something that you have no understanding of. Horses have many parts of their bodies that are of no use to them now that they have been domesticated. For their size, they have very delicate systems and they are fat more important things to worry about them whether or nota person clips the whiskers or hair in their horse's ears. Let grooms and owners go by the breed and show standard. if you want your horse to have an all natural look, then by all means keep him that way, otherwise keep your mouth shut. No one is hurting a horse by clipping it.
I'd rather keep my horses whiskers because they feel good when he puts his nose on my face 😁😁

its not good to trim them, but not bad either. depends how much you are actually trimming. if its just the out side and a little on the inside its fine, other wise you just put some fly stuff int here ears. muzzle, i would say you can trim then off completely because they dont always hunt around for holes do they :P but you can always leave them about 6-7 cm long..
+henriette oakheart There are plenty of reasons not to trim the muzzle: the horses brain has cells specifically to receive information from those muzzle whiskers, so it should not be dismissed as unimportant. Because of the location of a horse's eyes they cannot see directly below them. Those whiskers act as a way to guide them where their eyes cannot. Those whiskers serve an very important purpose. Yes, a horse can survive without them, but that doesn't mean that they should have to. A human can survive without fingernails, but no one would take pliers and remove all of their nail beds.
henriette oakheart the air on a horse's ears is there to stop flies from laying eyes in them and to stop dirt from getting far enough in to cause infection. So it is not good to even trim that even a little. As for the whiskers, I'm with Eve. There is no reason to trim the whiskers that YOUR HORSE NEEDS other than because you just want him to look better and don't care about and the things that they help your horse with.
yes but, if you were to trim the ears. you wouldn't trim ALL of the hair in the ear. you would trim just the top parts of the ear, and around it thats all.
Little tip for pulling manes. If you do it after a good lesson or work session it makes it easier to pull. This is good for sesnitive horses too
i have seen parts of your show and now i am going to have a marathon and watch all the episodes even if i know how to do something. it never hurts to re learn (can't think of the word right now) stuff

You should never trim inside the horses ear or on the muzzle.

Katie Cozzens Well, because horse whiskers provide valuable information to horses. Equine eyes are positioned in such a way that objects immediately in front of or below horses' noses are beyond their range of vision. So their horse whiskers help them "see" these objects. For example, while grazing, horses constantly rely on their whiskers to guide their muzzles toward edible food and away from other objects. The long whiskers near their eyes also warn them when there's a risk of bumping into obstacles, such as branches poking up out of the grass. Because whiskers serve as a sort of "third eye" for horses.

Matilda Jones Honestly fuck competitions. :) I don't mind clipping the main/horsetail to a reasonable length, but the rules in dressage competitions are unrealistic based on how the horse is actually built.
+Julia Gazso I agree, I've never trimmed my horse's whiskers off in my life!! The people I bought him from did but they grew back once I stopped, thank goodness! And as far as ears go, I'd never use clippers on his ears, all I do there is trim it with scissors when the hair growing out of the muzzle gets so long its sticking out, as he's very prone to getting lumps of wax stuck in it which make him very headshy. Don't see a problem with that, as long as he's still got hair left in his ears to keep the flies and dust away :)

I don't really like pulling manes but for my horses tail ( he doesn't like it either) I have a Solocomb which I find is really useful and doesn't split the hair... U should have a look on here, just put Solocomb in the bar, pretty horses
I remember my mom telling me to trim my horse's whiskers and I got very upset with her and said "Trimming his whiskers in equivalent to cutting a cat's whiskers off! It's painful for him." And she understood why I got angry. I will never pull a mane or tail, trim whiskers, or shave out the inside of my horse's ears. I can just trim his mane and tail with a comb and scissors and his whiskers can be left alone so he can be a normal horse

To me clipping a bridle path would irritate the horse
Because when the hair starts to grow back the stubble from the short hair contacting the halter would rub and feel prickly causing discomfort 😕
But that's just my opinion
That's why you trim it nice and regular or don't bother. I trim one of mine with scissors so it's nice and flat. The rest don't have them because they don't wear halters / bridles. I do it regular but sometimes it grows to prickles, and he's never minded it! And he's the type that will let you know if he's not happy. ;) but I totally agree with your point. This is just from my personal experiences. ;)

I understand, and it can do that, but what people generally do (or should do) is constantly keep it short, becuase it’s easier for you, and more comfortable for the horse :)
It's far more discomfort to have a full mane in the area and wear a halter or bridle that gets hair tangled or wrapped and may pull on the mane. The regrowth tends to not be too much of an issue for discomfort and for the winter I allow regrowth and the hair kind of just lays flat and is less than 1 inch in the months where it is freezing and has not caused discomfort to any of my horses in over 25 years. I don't keep it trimmed in the winter due to the cold and like it to have some hair there so it's not shaved close to the skin like summer.

what the actual hell!!! I have never ever seen anyone clipping the mussel hairs. I've seen the excess hair sticking out of the ears (not the hair inside the ears). Those hairs in the mussel are for feeling the surroundings. Taking them off is so unnatural. And I know it's equally unnatural to have them inside stalls etc. But why make it even more unnatural??
Thanks you two, that was really helpful. In the winter I have to clip at least 12 horses and a lot of then have problems with having their ears trimmed with scissors, but I was never shown how to do it with clippers. I managed to get them done in half the time now.

Hi thanks for your question. As far as we know it is just a fashion thing. For horses that don't have much of a tail, it can help make it 'look' a little thicker at the bottom. It also provides a cleaner look and means you don't have to braid the tail either which is kind of tricky to do really well. Hope this answers your question
I've been trimming my horse'a muzzles for 15 years. Never had I had a problem with them not being able to see where they are going. It grows back in a couple weeks anyway! It's only for completions to get a cleaner look. Evention TV know what they are talking about so all of you talking crap need to stop and grow up.
If you have a horse that's pastured almost 24/7 like my gelding, the muzzle hairs are extremely important. I trimmed my gelding's muzzle once and he seemed extremely lost while grazing and eventually gave up and went to stand in his run-in shed. Whiskers are feelers, they're there for a reason.
maybe you are just reading into it too much or it could also be that all horses are different. My jumper is pastured 24/7 and I always trim his muzzle before shows and he never acts any different when I turn him back out. Besides like I said it grows back in like 2 weeks and every horse is different.
I watched him try and eat a weed, then spit out, do this twice, finally find some grass, accidentally eat another weed, and blunder up to the run-in. XD Then again, he's a bit of a fruit loop...
haha! well who knows then! All horses probably react differently. So I guess we all just have to do what we need to do to accommodate for our horses needs.
Ginger Robson Ok well then don't trim your horses muzzle. It's your horse, do what you want. All I AM saying is that my horse is fine with it and i've never had a problem with any of my other horses.

Followed the way to trim the horse tail on my horse when I got him. Did the same length and everything as they show here but since he lifts his tail up so high in the trot (he is an x-trotter) it looked like I had chopped off half of his tail. So after that little accidet I only trim it to where his fetlock is since when he lifts his tail, it looks alright on him. The tail length is the only thing I trim on my horse since I want to grow out the rest of the hair he has

Thanks!! I may try this on my older TB then his tails becoming a little lack luster as he ages :) If a little trimming makes it look fuller, it is a much better option than the fake tail IMO. :D

Everyone has there own way of making there horses look tidy. Your opinion maybe different to there so no need for hate comments!
NEVER let you lead rope drop below your knee! If you do you can trip and hurt the horse and yourself. DONT trim or shave whiskers and don't shave in the ears.. I would never let you near a horse again. Don't cut tail too short! It's used to flick the files off them

Stop telling everyone in the comment don’t trim the muzzle or ears. These are show horses! We pull the manes, trim their eyelashes, muzzle, nose, ears, fetlocks, and body clip them. Period. If you don’t agree then don’t show but this is what every big barn does. In hunter jumpers we don’t pull or clip the tail though no one does
I wish they would have shown how to trim a long mane & tail in a way to keep it long, healthy and natural looking.

I agree with everyone here that is saying not to trim the muzzle. The muzzle is a part of the horse that connects to its brain, it may look fancy for shows but its not nice, the horses whiskers help it scence danger and if its scared of something. I don't own a horse but I do horse riding lessons and when I grow up im going to have a company with my friends and we will NOT cut the horses whiskers

have you ever heard of blading? not sure where you can find them but they make a thing that looks like a comb but inbetween the tines of the comb is like a knife and you just like pretend you are pulling the mane but just end up cutting the ends off of the longest hairs, great for thin manes!
So you don't trim the inside of the horse's ear in the summer because of bugs, but you trim it in the winter? What? You should never trim inside the horses ears. I don't care if its for a show/competion. If that's what you have to do then your obvisiolouy entering the wrong ones.

Sorry, it just makes me mad when I see people do stupid things with horses. Most of it is them just not knowing and being uneducated.
Ashley Coates Actually, it totally depends on the climate and hence the bugs in that place. I live in Melbourne, Australia and we clip out ears and don't have any problems as bugs are prevalent here. However, I do agree in climates that are full of bugs and people still clip their ears out.

You shouldn’t cut a horses whiskers because they’re there for a reason. The ears catch mud and dust in the winter. 🐴

@ThickAsWater trimming the horses whiskers is fine, horses use their whiskers to feels things without touching them to find out what they are. If your not showing there is not need to trim them. The only way it is bad for your horse is if you pluck then out, which should never be done. :)

My horse hates the mane-trimming. He will shake his head every time i touch the mane... Im forced to cut and trim with a scissor 🙄 so thats the way i do it..
I'll trim under the jawline and the legs, and I'll trim a bridle path and clean up the tail, but I don't like to clip the whiskers and the ears. They use their whiskers a lot and without their ear hair, bugs can get in there. That's uncomfortable to say the least.

There's really no other way. You just have to keep introducing them to your horse. I have a coming 2 year old who I have bridle path clipped once since I got him (his first time) and he really didn't like them but I didn't rush and in the end I got it done.
The best advice I can give you is DONT do it when you in a rush. If you act like you only have 15 minutes it will take you all day but if you act like you have all day it will take you 15 minutes :)
my horse is like this as well. I use scissors and you can get a nice clean cut
Abby James A little late maybe, but I clip my care-horses bridle path with scissors. If you clip correctly you can get a really neat and clean path.
If you want, you can use scissors. But if you want to have a cleaner cut, just use a twitch while clipping.

It's a thinning comb :) you're supposed to use the back combing method with them as well otherwise you'd just be cutting the end of the mane.

I wouldn't hose a hirse with cold water can chill them I use warm water gets tge dirt off easier

I don't usually cut my horses muzzle because I know someone who did that and there horse kept hitting there nose at the bottom of the bucket suddenly and she stopped eating
