    How deep does the dye penetrate? If the handle gets slightly scuffed, will the original color be right there underneath?

    • @BlueCollarSurvival
      @BlueCollarSurvival  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the scuff is significant enough the original color will come through. Minor scuffs and most normal wear and tear will be fine.

    I tried the daffodil yellow rit dye on one of my bugout OD green scales. The result was somewhere between brown and desert tan. So I have that on one side and the Factory OD Green on the other, so it looks camouflage. Idk if I’ll keep it that way, but it looks pretty dope for now. Thanks for the tutorial

      Right on! Sometimes you can be surprised by the outcome. I was actually surprised by the maroon color that came out on this one. I have a green camouflage PM2 that I dyed red with the same dye and it turn out amazing. Thanks Devin.

    Hey BCS Justin! Just checked this out as I'm trying to dye my jade 940 scales. I got all set up, broke down the knife and then turned to your video. Laughed at m'sef when I heard the disclaimer about synthetic-specific dye. I was trying to go off-grid style with walnut husks. Had them smashed up and water boiled already, so I'm going to drop them in and see what happens. Maybe leave them in there for a few days (not on hot though, lol). Experiment! Thanks for your vid and I'll go get some of that particular type of Rit dye if nothing takes. Your stuff looks great, so I'll do a rewatch if this fails. 🤘

    Any reason why some people dip it for 20-30 mins vs you dipping it for 30 seconds? So just bring the pot to a boil? Add the rit. Let simmer and then dip? I see a slot of people adding the rit before the water even boils.

    • @BlueCollarSurvival
      @BlueCollarSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is just the way I do it. It's worked pretty good for me and I never dip it any longer than 1 minute. I've done several handle scales and they've all turned out great. I seem some people add vinegar to the mix also but I'm not sure why.

  • @don0giorgio
    @don0giorgio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What happened to the pot afterwards? Can you wash red dye off? And if you choose to use f.e. blue dye is it a problem?

    • @BlueCollarSurvival
      @BlueCollarSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I soak my pot in bleach water and the dye comes out. Do that and it shouldn't be an issue.

    Hi mate, know you did this a while back, that colour is exactly my regimental colour! I would like to achieve that on the Bugout scales, the tan style ones so a bit lighter than yours? Racing red synthetic, maybe just dip mine a little longer to achieve that colour?

    I dyed my tan handle/black blade griptilian about 8 months ago. Used the red Rit dye. Was going for a nice darker red to burgundy color. Walked off for a few minutes to long and came back to plum purple scales. Turns out this stuff works pretty fast, lol. It actually looks pretty good with the deep purple and black blade/hardware. I'm not too much of a man to use a purple knife.

    Would this work on g-10 as well? And how does it smell? I've heard it stinks but that was because vinegar (?) was used. Thanks for the vid, I've been trying to figure out a good way to dye some scales and this looks like the best method.

      It works great on G10. That's what my Para Military 2 is in the video and it came out amazing. I like the smell but I don't use vinegar. You can play with the times for different shades.

    Great idea! I experimented with several 'partial' dippings in the Rit Sapphire Blue to try and get a more 'variegated' look on some cheap acrylic scales that were originally in a sorta 'pink' design on a 'lady's' stiletto. Ended up with a surprisingly cool-looking deep 'plum' color, also with a bit of a color 'gradient' that really pops against the chrome bolsters... thx a lot!

    • @BlueCollarSurvival
      @BlueCollarSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's quite easy. This was actually only my second attempt. It's pretty straight forward, you can play with time to get different shades or tape of parts and do a 2 tone. You can already start with a $5 cheapy.

      I want an orange or red rat. No it won't die metal. I don't know if anything will. Maybe if you acid wash it first then dye it but it may just be a tinge of color.

    Some tips for anyone: black (graphite) takes 4-5 minutes or more time. Highly polished g10 needs to be roughed up or the dye doesn't won't take to it very good, this includes areas worn smooth naturally from carrying/use. Yeah, stuff I learned today😁.
