Time travel back to 1944 - Haunting "then and now" WWII photos from the southern France Invasion

- "Before and after" comparisons of World War II photos with the same locations today, depicting German soldiers and Allied paratroopers on the French Riviera in 1944, at the period of Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France.
The area of Nice was occupied by German troops of Reserve Division 148. On August 15th 1944, the Allies, spearheded by paratroopers of the First Airborne Task Force, landed in southern France and liberated the region of Nice over the next weeks.
The body of the killed German soldier under the tree only was found in 2006, a video on the exhumation can be seen here: • WWII German Mass Grave...

How ephemeral are the things we have wrought in the face of the geology of our planet.
Paradoxically, these give me an appreciation of deep time. How we flash into the sunlight & are gone whilst the hills & rocks watch us flicker across the landscape.

In my mind I still have the image of us flickering across the landscape as seen, if it could see, by the rocks & hills that exist on an incredibly long temporal frame of reference compared to our own.

My Father served in WWII and I am very proud of Him. He died in 1993 in Colorado. He lived a good life and had 5 Children and countless Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren that He never knew. I’m the youngest, but He never talked about the war. I think He thought of all the Young Men and Women who died fighting in the war. All this sadness during this 80 Anniversary of D-Day because 1 Man wanted to rule the world and make sure that People suffered. They suffered because they were different and hated for who and what they were! Children in this day and age don’t understand and aren’t taught why All of these Men, Women and Children died. No one teaches History anymore. I’m not ashamed of the Greatest Generation of Our Nation and the World. They All Sacrificed, so We would NEVER suffer in that way again! A Daughter of a Proud World War II Veteran.

Words can't begin to describe this masterpiece, from the music to the photos, I've never been so enthralled by a video. I know as humans it's normal to become disconnected from the photos we see, but you've managed to bridge the gap. The transitions are phenomenal, that alone is memorizing, but the cherry on top is when you added names and the day they died. That's the human element that we forget, we forget that men, women, and children of all ages died in this conflict. It's hard to do history justice, but you've succeeded, well done simply amazing.

I absolutely love these before and after. Those who were there in 1944 had no idea of what would become of those places all those years later. Its great to see how in some cases very little has changed. Thank you
I served 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and 2 combat tours in Vietnam as a Infantry machine gunner. I often wonder about some of the places we fought like the jungles and rice paddies. I wonder if they have changed in the 50 plus years it's been since that time.

When I used to look a old black and white photos, they never felt real. But in this video, these photos feel more real then the a the pictures I take my self. It’s almost like you get transported back in time!

My dad was in the Merchant Marine throughout the war. His ship was in the invasion convoy that supplied and carried troops that day, August 15, 1944. He survived the war but PTSD took him 40 years later. War is hell.

It often amazes me how many little details remain the same. The photo of the German officers in a room with windows behind them was intriguing, the open wooden shutters around the windows hadn't changed one tiny bit since then, it looked like they hadn't even been moved a mm in all those years. Little details like that make it easier to transport yourself back to that time, it's a peculiar feeling to consider that some things are just still exactly as they were. I often think about that when I'm in a historical location, what hasn't changed at all, the bricks that someone else touched so long ago, the woodwork that's been polished for a century by people who have no idea how many people have done that before them.

Utterly amazing. Save for any young kids that might have been in any of the pictures, all have passed on by now. Almost 80 years ago. Many things seem to be the same with the buildings and I admire the ''then and now'' comparison. The research and location scouting alone is a massive effort. Thank you for presenting this.

The greatness of the photos is really great. Keep storing 80 + years WWii memories, that too in very good condition is really great. I am going through all the albums and traveled back to WWii period. Thanks for sharing.
The older I get, the more fascinated I become with history, the 2 world wars and the Wild West… I’ve also watched many documentaries on romans and vikings… but the wars are incredibly fascinating, knowing I’ve spoken with ppl who lived through it and not asking questions and hearing their stories upsets me daily… if only time travel was a thing 😢

Even colorized pictures and videos do not do justice to seeing a modern-taken photograph, it's incredible the contrast of seeing the exact same spot in color and in the blink of an eye to know that it was still there in the past. I can only imagine those titanic photos we have and if we were able to grasp in reality how it really was, literally it's like like traveling through time. Incredible work here.. Kudos!

That was very touching toward the last half especially when the parents were shown at their son's grave and being elderly I estimate he'd been gone for at least 20-30 years and still in mourning. This was my first time seeing actual personal info about the ongoing war within those left behind.
What a tragedy as I think of my Dad's Mom who had nervous breakdown's over her two sons that served in the ETO and my mom's brother who fought against the Russians counter offensive in Latvia who never returned home. Sometimes tragedies become cause and effect when my mom and dad married in Augsburg, Germany during the time my Dad and many others got transferred out and into POW duty.
In the film the Narrator mentioned German women getting married and shipping overseas wow that could be a good thing for the husband who's wife stays home because the Americans took issue with it in Germany and America, but the husband had lots of fun with a wife who feels safer at home.
I suppose many British women who’s husbands were serving overseas were never short of stockings and bubble gum when the Yanks arrived.

Even if Hitler and the Nazis didn't come to power (someone else would have) the "Treaty of Versailles" all but guaranteed WW2 would happen. You cant impose that kind of punishment on a country while calling it "reparations" and expect people to put up with it.

I simply stated the fact that another world war, with Germany at the heart of it, was almost impossible to avoid after what was done to them. This is the best before/after photo matchup video I've seen. I wish, though, that the sequence of photos was now-then-now rather than just now-then. But that's a minor quibble.

Horrifying thing is we haven’t been around to see anywhere near the worst of it… praying I won’t live to see the next world war. Especially with our modern day nuclear weapons, that could extinct a small country.
War is such a sad event. So many lives lost. They never had a chance to savour the joys of life, so many unfulfilled dreams, so many unspoken words, not even a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones …… and still wars continue over the landscape of history, even to this day! Ive dealt with them for 16 years, and they are always vague about condemning my videos. They took down an instrumental piece of music I posted, that had no lyrics or visuals. Only music. Labeled as "Glorifying Violence". Makes me .. nope not going to say it.

What surprises me is that my videos are monetized, so they are losing a certain amount of money by censoring them....
You could also expect that when you make a video with hundreds of thousands of views, they could at least tell you what the issue is before killing it.

A painful, yet hopeful, reminder that life goes on despite the tragedies of the past as well as those to come. Some will survive to go on to do good for all of us. Some will not, but they lent a hand along the way. If only those buildings, trees, streets, and rocks could talk to tell us what took place. What a sobering experience that would be. May God grant eternal peace to all of the fallen.

Very powerful video. 6 or 7 of my uncles fought in WW 2. They didn't talk much about it. War is terrible, so many lives cut short. Who knows what might have been if millions lived out their full lives?

When you sit back and think about it, on a huge scale, every country you can think of is its own museum, each with history and relics from a former era.
This was beautifully done. Thank you to those folks who researched the pictures and where they were taken. I'm sure that was hard figuring out where all these were taken and seeing if those locations are still able to be seen today.
You never know what happened in the past on any given spot. There are buildings on my property that are gone now and after I am gone, no one will ever remember them.

This video will be very useful for all of our descendants. I, who am Indonesian and did not experience those events and even my country was not directly involved in those events, felt touched, as if I was there. It's lucky that many buildings don't experience much change there, unlike in my country where lots of historical buildings have been replaced by new buildings, for the sake of money. Let's study history, let's read the books and together prevent the recurrence of this terrible war.

All these pictures show how short lived and temporary we all are. We are like birds flying through trees, just like many generations did before. We do not own the world, but just walk around in it for a few years.
Well said. What seems horrific or irreversible today, in time, changes. For the French under Nazi occupation however, those four years probably seemed like they'd never end. Then one day, as suddenly as it began, it was over.

I watched this 3 times,my father was in the special forces in WW2,I see him in their shadows,he passed in 03, always spoke of the men he fought with as brothers. He was medic in his unit and told me once that there are no atheists on the battle field,all prayed before they died.he would have heard their last cry's.james McCreadie was his name.he was a red beret. Australia 1st para regiment.
About atheists and foxholes, here is an interesting letter written by Lt George Parnell, of the 887th Engineers, after he was wounded in southern France:
"I could see the machine gun bullets walking down the road towards me and they didn’t bother me a bit. I was facing down the road on my stomach and watched them - they came right by my ear and down my side and one caught my foot - on the third burst I rolled off the road and down a steep hill and then played hide and seek with the machine gun and sniper for about an hour and a half trying to work my way back out of sight and range. The injured foot did not hurt at all. The actual hit felt like someone had tied a rope on the foot and given the rope a short tug. They shelled me at the same time but fortunately I found a culvert running under the road which protected me from the shelling and also provided a means of escape. I crawled through it under the road and kept to the ravine it led into up and over the mountain. (…) Yes Beatrice, I do like it here. Right now I’m doing something more important than I’ve ever done before in my life. I like it and I’m proud of it and have every intention of doing it until either it or myself is finished - my little life is so unimportant and I really do realize and believe that - by the way - there are atheists in fox-holes - I am one. My only thought was that that son of a bitch couldn’t hit the barn door at 50 feet."

My dad spent all of 1944 in France and Belgium with the 103rd ID.
We are all just walking in someone’s footsteps that came before us. I live in California near some historic gold mines. I often wonder how many people were working the same streams for gold that I go fishing in now.

While there can be no diminishing the bravery, one must always question the argument for the absolute need of war. Our Given talents should go to building a world where war is not only totally unnecessary, but quite unthinkable.

For-profit wars, Proxy Wars, Leaders arent really in charge, Multi-national corporations drive the need for war, not any will for sane human beings. All for the coming Great Reset.
War is a complete suspension of rational thought. But we just keep doing it.

When one country decides to attack another country with military force, what should they do? Fight back? Or give up? War is necessary to protect your nation and the people in said nation.
