Dirlewanger didn't die of natural causes - he was arrested, handed over the the French and they stuck him in prison - but they 'just happened' to stick him in a wing with Polish guards and Dirlewanger was beaten to death... Given the atrocities he comitted against the Poles he got off lightly....

The poles were dogs that found their teeth when England gave them support.
The night of August 31 saw the Polish foreign minister running around Berlin looking for Hitler to tell him that Poland had changed their mind and that they agreed to the terms previously put forward.

The 12th SS massacred 156 Canadian prisoners after D-Day. It should be no surprise that Canadians refused to take SS prisoners. Why Kurt Meyer served 9 years for this crime is an injustice.

Not all got off with light sentences but I think a good portion did. Here are a few that were executed and they were Hans Frank, Ernst Kartenbrunner, Arthur Seay’s-Inquart, Irma Grese, Rudolph Hoess, Herman’s Goring was scheduled to be executed but cheated the hangman by committing suicide, Dorothea Binz, Maria Mandell, Johanna Borman, Franz Bottger, Karl Brandt, Wilhelm Dorr, Adolf Eichmann, Amon Goth, and many others but yes most got off scott free while others were sentenced to life and got released in less than 10 years while others sentenced to death had sentences commuted. Way too many got off way too easy especially Sepp Dietrich and many others while others were assisted in escaping to S America with help from Bishop Hudal at the Vatican who was a Nazi sympathizer and he got them the necessary documents to go to S America via the so called “rat lines”.

I was stationed in a former SS army barracks. It had the marks of a deadly fight in its walls - no SS survivors. We were told that after the massacre of POWs by the SS, Eisenhower gave orders to take no SS prisoners. The Russians had the same orders - no prisoners with SS insignias. I'm not sure what US troops actually did, but the Russians mowed them down and did the same to German regular army.

My father (a WWII Infantry officer) told me long ago that they would rather face an SS unit than a standard Wehrmacht unit. The SS (mostly) were not elite fighters, and the Wehrmacht saw far more combat than the SS did. One thing the SS was was dedicated, so they didn't surrender easily - but that didn't make them elite units, just more ideologically driven.
I worked with a couple of SS vets while stationed in Germany. One was an officer who had taught at their officer (Junker) school in Bad Tolz during the war. He was cleared by the US Army to work for us, so I gotta think his record was clean. BUT, he was a member of the SS, so not pure as the driven snow either. Most folks in my unit were unaware of his past - he just did his job and went home at the end of the day. Dude was married, but at his funeral all SEVEN of his mistresses and a ton of his children were there for it.

While stationed in West Germany at Smith Kaserne in Aschaffenburg situated northwestern Bayern. Our barracks was a former SS base. There were still iron rings morticed in the walls of the motor pool where they tethered their horses. The fanatical unit there as well as the town avidly nazi gave a great fight to Patton and his forces trying to capture the city. The battle began on March 25, 1945 and after ten hard fought deadly days the SS stronghold finally
surrendered. The combined forces of the 7th and 3rd Armies suffered 3,000 KIA, WIA, and MIA. In a news conference on April 7th 1945 Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson noted, "There is a lesson in respect to [fighting to the end] in Aschaffenburg. There nazi fanatics used the visible threat of two hangings to compel German soldiers and civilians to fight for over a week."

In reality they were probably long past caring at that point but unit morale is often tied up with traditions. One of the first things the Soviets did upon taking Berlin was rounding up all the ceremonial flags of various German units they could find and parading them. There is a photo of many of these flags and standards being held pointing to the ground by a line of soviet soldiers who are turned to face the camera.
The Liebstandarte division were also ordered to remove their cuff which bore the signature of Adolf Hitler rather than the unit's name. As a bit of trivia, the name liebstandarte means life regiment and essentially bears the same name as the senior regiment of the British Army, the Life Guards. The Swedish Army also has a unit called the Life Regiment Hussars going back to a common theme amongst European armies.

Of the German POWs that made it to Soviet POW camps in the rear areas over 80% survived. The death toll is skewed by the high percentage of Stalingrad POW fatalities due to their starvation before capture. It was the prisoner taking and initial processing that was the most lethal for any German combatant. There seemed to be an unofficial order to shoot anyone caught with death head symbols on their uniforms. A policy which proved deadly for a lot off Panzer troops who had a different death head emblem from the SS.

The Cold War effectively ended de-Nazification efforts by the West, and provided sanctuary for former SS soldiers.

Because they didn't commit atrocities on an industrial scale doesn't absolve them of guilt. Look at the concentration camps in South Africa during the Boer War. It's a pattern. No country is willing to admit its own crimes which is hardly surprising. Britain likes to portray itself as decent and fair, admitting to their mistakes would undermine the image that they want to propagate. All Nations have the potential to follow the path of Nazi Germany. All countries.

@@tigerland4328 No, they were worse. They never showed a bit of remorse over the killings of innocent women and children. The British government told them it was proud of what they had done. Mountbatten ordered the machine gunning of peaceful protesters, all of them women and children and was proud of it. The official count was in the hundreds, but the British only counted those who died in hospitals or on site. Many hundreds more died at home and were never counted. Mountbatten afterwards said, “ They were traitorous Irish dogs and deserved whatever they got.” The royal family blocked most of the inquiry into the deaths and still blocks inquiries even today. Mountbattens actions exacerbated the troubles and extended them for decades. The fact that the policy of no inquiries into atrocities committed by the army became standard procedure didn’t help.

The fact that the British didn't commit atrocities on an industrial scale doesn't make them less guilty. Even now they are covering up war crimes their soldiers perpetrated in Afghanistan, with the government refusing to give details and, be open and honest about it. The British have always sought to present themselves as decent and fair. 'The Good Guys' .To admit their dreadful deeds would reflect badly on them. Look at the concentration camps they ran in South Africa during the Boer War. Its a pattern of behaviour. These horrors too have been swept under the carpet. If we don't talk about them they never happened, and we can go on deluding ourselves. In not delivering real justice the Germans could pretend that their husbands, brothers and sons were also merely doing their duty, no more. This kind of behaviour is universal. All countries are capable of this kind of behaviour. All countries.

This is in no way a backing of what they did. I would say they were doing what they thought was right, being told something over and over and really believing you were doing the right thing for your family and country is all a soldier can do. The Waffen S>S was not part of the German army, it was a seperate militarised political organisation. The traditional army resented, even hated them. They were not even elite just driven.

It was a kind of 4th branch. Compare it with US Army, Navy, Air Force , Marines.Average German soldiers were happy to know the "other ones" on their side. History is written by the winner of the war and Hollywood. The greatest enemie of historians and media is the contemporary witness.

That's an interesting assertion. It looks to me like fascist mentality is Alive and Well in the so-called neoliberal Progressive movements of america. In other words, fascism basically meaning that you force or make certain points of view become accepted and you simply do not tolerate and you wish to cancel out anyone else who has an opposing point of view. I actually see that coming way more from the left. But one thing is for sure, anything one extreme side of the political spectrum is guilty of, you can find evidence on the other. Yeah, I got a real kick out of people that just try to say Trump is a fascist without any real logical backing up behind it
