Honestly, my FM9 and Axe3 were the best investments in musical gear that I have ever made.
I’m a qc guy but this video format is endlessly entertaining!!! One guy who knows the device creates a preset and leads through the menus explaining everything and one guy who knows nothing about the device requesting stuff and asking stupid questions. It’s the most entertaining user manual ever!
Habe mir vor ein paar Monaten auch den FM9 gekauft. Der kam mit allen aktuellen Sounds mit dem neuesten Update fix und fertig. Auspacken, anschließen, Output eistellen nach hervoragender Anleitung in deutsch, Gitarre anschließen und los gehts. Besser geht es nicht. Die Sounds sind einfach sehr gut. Bei Fragen einfach anrufen. Persönlicher Service, megafeundlich und kompetent. Auch das ist kaum zu toppen. Ich liebe meinen FM9. Wer mit den Sounds noch mehr will, kann hat jede Menge Möglichkeiten. Dann allerdings muss man sich in der Tat eingehender mit dem FM9 beschäftigen. Wie hier im Video bereits erwähnt, bietet Bernd Kiltz dazu einen kompletten Kurs an. Aus meiner kurzen Erfahrung kann ich Fractal Audio uneingeschränkt empfehlen. Ich habe auch ein paar Amps und weis um das Geschleppe der schweren Teile. Mehr Platz im Auto brauchen die auch. Den FM9, eine Box und ein, zwei Gitarren ist da schon etwas anderes. Alle Effekte hat man auch gleich an Bord. Einfach großartig.

Fractal Audio is undoubtedly the flagship among modeling devices. The technical and sound quality are unparalleled. Artists like Guthrie Govan, Jason Richardson, Metallica, Neal Schon, Alex Lifeson, The Edge, John Mayer, Dweezil Zappa, Aerosmith, Synyster Gates, Devin Townsend, Tosin Abasi, Periphery, Andy Summers, Aaron Marshall, Henrik Linder, Tim Henson, and many others emphasize this.
As a Fractal artist, I found the video somewhat long-winded but also interesting, as it was fascinating to see how two "newbies" approached the subject. I think many new users would do the same, which ultimately makes the video engaging.
The capabilities of Fractal Audio devices are virtually limitless. It's a pity that the video only scratched the surface and the incredible quality of the device, especially the effects, was not fully showcased. The patch created by Henning and Jon still sounded quite good, even though many sensible basic settings, such as the frequency range of the Cab IR, were not adjusted.
In today's world, user experience (UX) is of immense importance. We have become very accustomed to convenience, expecting everything to be accessible at the push of a button. I believe Fractal Audio has done an excellent job with usability, particularly with the editor. Operating the device itself is not quite as simple, but this is also the case with complex devices from companies like Eventide or Lexicon. I don't think a touchscreen would help much here. One must pay tribute to the many possibilities. The fact that Fractal Audio offers 327 amp models and 2048 Cab IRs is fantastic. The ability to dive deep into the settings is also fantastic. If you don't want that, you can keep things super simple, as shown in the video, and create your custom preset in no time.
Perhaps Fractal should release a light version, such as an "HP42 Edition," with four amps, one cab, and a few effects. Such an entry-level device would make a lot of sense.
If you prefer products from other companies, prefer to stay analog, or combine everything, that's wonderful too.
We live in a guitarist's toy paradise and can take full advantage of it. Wonderful!
There is a way to get quickly to some of the blocks. You have to be on the Home screen, then you double click the A-E knobs. A=Amp, B=Drive, C=Cab, D=Delay, E=Reverb.
The point of too many amps is not to use all, it is so that most can find their favourite amp modeled in there

I LOVE that it doesnt have a touchscreen. Was one of the big selling points for me.
I tried the quad and it sounded awesome of course (as a modern metal guy, it has nameless so... yknow) BUT it felt flimsy and like a glorified ipad. Yes the menu on the fractal could be more intuitive, but tbh if its too complicated for you and you dont wanna invest the time to learn it, why do you get a modeler in the first place?
Not everything needs a touchscreen. Im not driving a tesla either cause i like real cars and not tablets on wheels😂
I couldn’t agree more! It’s the best modeler available and I‘m looking for tone and not for a gaming console.

@@JorisGriffioen why a modeler LIKE THIS is more accurate maybe. The main selling point is complex rigs with hundreds of amps/cabs and fx with seamless switching and endless possibilities. The fractal still sounds great for anything I think but 3k is really a LOT of money just to do basic tone stuff imo

Sold my Headrush and got a HX Stomp because I was intending to travel and the HX, along with my Strandberg, fit the bill. Then came Covid. At the time Headrush didn't have a small form-factor product. One nice thing about the Headrush is that its limited # of options relative to the competition seems like a detriment, but it covers all the basics and it sounds good. 300+ amp models is just insane and there's too many machinations necessary to get a working tone. As it is, I spend way too much time tweaking my HX Stomp. For most people, simpler is better.

The FM9 is hands down the coolest thing I've ever bought myself as a guitar player. I run mine through a EV PXM-12MP and couldn't be happier.

I think the coolest part of the FM9 is that you can use a load box like a Suhr Reactive Load, to load a real amp head, and send that line level signal into the FM9, and us it as an "amp block". If you are unsure about using amp modelling, this unit allows you to do both.

every minute spent on learning the FAS devices is 110% worth it, it always pays dividends. a great method i found to drive me to explore these devices is set tone "goals" in songs i like to cover (apart from my own personal tones) and try to get there by tweaking. and once you get the concept behind the interface it all becomes extremely accessible
When on the HOME screen, the ABCDE knobs are hot keys to jump to predefined block edit pages. Double-clicking the knob is as follows: A is AMP, B is DRIVE, C is CAB, D is DELAY, and E is REVERB.
I really struggled with the Fractal stuff & badly wanted to make it work for me (because Metallica) but hated it because it wasn't as immediate as my Quad Cortex. Had an FM3, Axe FX 3 and FM 9 but never invested the time. This time round with an FM9 I've spent a lot of time with it, getting to know the interface & all the tweakability, now I absolutely love it. Amazing units, not for everyone and you invest the time to learn it but if you do, it'll be rewarding.
great to see you adventure into Fractal Audio land, it's huge and expansive =)
but once you get the hang of fractal edit and how blocks/routing work, things get a lot easier
I've got some straight forward preset build from scratch videos on my channel, but nothing beats getting to grips with the unit yourself
if it helps making a simple preset with nothing but say a drive / amp / cab / delay / reverb and then trying out different amps + cabs to find something you like to get started, is a great way to go, and then tweak that initial preset to further refine what you have
as you said there's so much control and options on offer, but it's as complicated or as easy as you want, if you need some help/ideas , let me know

I have literally tried every unit out there (Helix, QC, TMP, etc) and the FM9 is the one. Yes, there is a learning curve, but nothing sounds as good.
That's where Fractal stands out against other products. Like it's clearly indicated on the unit, it's an amp modeler and an FX Processor. Can't really compare to Kempers, Quad Cortex, Tonex, etc.. because those are PROFILING units. Those have been created to bring your precious captured studio gear on the road with you without the costs and the fear of broke them down. Like you said, Fractal products have been created to emulate a vast range of gear and gives you the possibility to tweak all the settings. Don't forget also the additional pedal controller that you can hookup and control more parameters. I put a FM3 in a rack shelf and plugged an FC-12 to it to use on stage, that gives me a lot of footwitchs capabilities and my gear if safe on the backline in case anything happens. I also have a FM9 if I'm solo and don't need the whole band's rack/iem. When you'll learn about layout links, per-preset layouts, and so on, you'll be completely hooked. I really tried a lot of modelers, Boss GT1000, Helix LT, Hotone, Mooer, but since I bought FM3, I do not have the itch to try something else anymore.
When FX are in serial the trails on block bypass is bypass mode Mute FX In. It allows what has already been sent to the effect engine to continue to decay but stops send data in to the effect engine while bypassed.
Anyone complaining about the UI: The knobs and stuff work for quick tweaks, but yea...setting it up that way is tedious. But...USE A COMPUTER!! lol...I seriously haven't even TOUCHED my Axe-FX II in YEARS. It's ALL done on the computer. If you're trying to do it all on the screen on the unit, you're doing it wrong. IMO, at least.
EDIT: Just like they say at 29:48...👍...no idea why people complain about the little screen on the Fractal stuff. It's kinda irrelevant. lol
This piece of magical musical equipment is like my katana Mk 2 100w. )Which took me months to figure out,) times 20! If I locked myself in a room with it, maybe I'd figure it out basically in a year!👍

I have the Helix floor and the tones achieved with the FM9 were created with a minimum of tweaking. I've tried the rabbit hole a bit and it gets you nowhere. I use maybe 3, maybe 4 amp models at my gigs...sometimes just one. Does that justify the cost? We'll find out because this thing is on my list.
Use the Scene manager to engagiert disengage blocks for each scene.
You can activate or disengage the overspill in the setup menu.
The Zappa family. Would probably quickly be at home with this.
Dweezil uses the Axe-FX 3 as his main rig.

The two amp modellers i have are FM3 and Tonex One.
Tonex One is pretty cool for when you only need one amp model and that's it. Sounds great.
FM3 is my main horse, and I will only upgrade from it when they make something smaller, with the same functionality.

I use the Helix LT mainly as my main rig, I'd love to have a zoom call with you and teach you about Scenes, it's actually super easy and is great for live playing.
Just used it yesterday in a gig for the first time (was lazy for 4 years, just played at home) and it ran like a champ!
I think even without a touchscreen, it is possible to make a more intuitive user interface. The Mooer GE-200 and GE-300 are a great example for that.
The Brit JM45 (JTM 45) is one of my go to clean Amps. For the Friedman the V1, V2, V3 are the different gain switch positions. Then they replicate the same bring on the HBE channel. I like the HBE C45 as a lead Amp. The C45 model is with that switch (found on the back of the head) engaged. It’s worth it to use the wiki to help understand what all the amp models are.

Fm9 is all you’ll ever need. Yes there’s a learning curve to it but once you is all set and done. The tones are amazing.
Btw to achieve spillover “MUTE IN” and if is a parallel effects block “MUTE FX IN” or viceversa!!!

This video makes my gt-1000 seem like axe-fx lite, but in a nice way! Sort of like they've done half the work for you by default by setting up the blocks and using less but highly tweakable amp types. I think my tastes are more like Hemmings, I'm still on my first patch called 'Dirty and Dirtier' which is just a boost into a marshally thing pretty much!

What an amazing piece of gear... but yea, you can go down the rabbit hole: same thing applies to modular synths - however I have made lots of music with that stuff, most people just get locked into some sort of bleep mode. LOL So, yes, you need to remember not to let perfection get in the way of good or 'good enough'. The audience don't give a shit about the nuance.

Yes it’s a modeller, probably the best available. Brilliant sounds but super tweakable so big learning curve for the uninitiated. I love Fractal stuff, but it’s not for everyone.

In the US, it is $1800, and in the EU, 2340 EUR. Hell, they can afford a phone guy!!! I was prepared to buy it, but at this price difference - forget it! G66 - it is nice to have a monopoly, obviously!
When comparing the US price with the European price, remember to add the freight, 4% duty, the 3-year warranty ($179.99), and the 19% - 27% EU-VAT, all of which are included in the European price. By doing so, you will see that the European price is even about €100 lower than the US price.

I don't like touch screens. (I don't have a Fraggle box btw). With buttons and knobs you can become super fast through experience. With touch however, there's no physical feedback so you have to watch your finger to know you're hitting the intended target, and in the right way or it mightn't register.

Hatte mich auch angeboten. Wäre natürlich auch nett gewesen mit Bernd und Jon zusammen. Aber war auch interessant zu sehen, wie 2 "Newbies" an die Sache rangehen. Ich denke, dass geht vielen Usern so - deshalb letztendlich ein durchaus interessantes Video.
Schade, dass nur an der Oberfläche gekratzt wurde und z.B. die unglaubliche Qualität der Effekte in keinster Weise zur Geltung kam.
Die Sache mit dem UX (User Experience) ist natürlich enorm wichtig in unserer Zeit, Man ist super bequem geworden und alles soll mit einem Knopfdruck erreichbar sein.
Ich finde, dass Fractal Audio die Bedienung, insbesondere mit dem Editor, sehr gut gelöst hat. Die Bedienung am Gerät ist nicht ganz so einfach, aber das ist bei Geräten wie Eventide, Lexicon, etc. auch nicht anders.. Ein Touchscreen würde da glaube ich wenig helfen. Letztendlich ist die klangliche und technische Qualität der Fractal Audio Geräte unübertroffen.
Wenn man die Produkte anderer Firmen bevorzugt, lieber analog bleibt, oder auch alles kombiniert, ist das doch wunderbar.
Wir leben im gitarristischen Schlaraffenland und können aus dem vollen schöpfen. Herrlich 🤘🎸❤
Some decent sounds. Lousy interface. If someone needs that many choices, go for it. When my wife saw the price, she called it "a$z effects." Fructal bois go crazy.

These are not hard at all to navigate especially in axe edit.
Everything has a learning curve but we’re all somewhat gear geeks and a lot of it is built into us from tweaking etc.
They sound good no doubting that but they are miles over priced

Helix edit is far easier than any other editor and working on the helix floor with out the editor is the same as working with pedals and amps as i said very simple and intuitive and sound wise now that 3.7.1 is out it is awesome for the sounds. I like all these types of units and it comes down to preferences and your work flow , still love 2 amps and a pedal board but at times that’s not convenient so go for what your personality is and learn it and then JUST PLAY!!!😊
This is why I really like the NUX MG30. Not too many options but does them all well. I'd spend my time in option paralysis with this I think.

@@EytschPi42 I appreciate that you took the time to reply to my off-hand remark. Thank you. It is important to me that you are aware that this was not a critique of you, I enjoy what you do. ( You had me once you got lebkuchen crumbs all over an amp you were reviewing.) I would explain what I meant, but I have a feeling you already know what I am talking about (option paralysis and knob diddling). I am sure that the FM9 is a great tool in the right circumstance (fly date)...once it has been dialed in. It's the process of getting it dialed in that turns me off. I'm more interested in expressing myself immediately, rather than exploring the endless possibilities that never seem to end. I just see it as a rabbit hole... and anything with a USB port is just planned obsolescence. YMMV.
@@EytschPi42 You could have tried a few of the factory presets to get a bit faster into playing guitar. But you would have risked only playing and no longer getting to know the concept of the device... ;-)
So why you see nearly on every stage of the big gigs a Kemper?😉Because the Kemper sounds much better and more on spot to the real deal……..and it‘s very simple to configurate and handling., period. Check that under this aspect and and say it isn’t so……..
The combination of an amplifier and a cab should sound perfect without needing any additional options or settings...but the truth is that it doesn't sound good at all ...
Fractal's interfaces have been terrible from the start. That's why I sold the AX8 and stopped caring about the company. Excellent sounding, yes, but so are others.
Sold my FM9 for the same reason, it sounds great, but brought me no joy. QC user now.
It's really way too complicated. Ideally, there should be a simpler modeler where you have, for example, just three choices for each amp, each cabinet, etc., but everything sounds good and has been well-studied. It's always better to have that than 10,000 options that don't sound good because they require tons of adjustments.
I think that's a major flaw of modeling these days; it's often too complex, with too many choices.
That's often what makes me stick to my good old tube amps and pedals; it's simpler after all.
I'm thinking especially of Ampknob. What an excellent idea that guy had. It's simple, with hardly any adjustments, and it sounds great.
Are you a bedroom guitarist or a gigging musician tho? I for example play a lot of digital hardcore punk stuff and need lots of changes stutters and crazy effects automated via midi with pitch shifting every few seconds because on the record its an edited and cut up midi guitar. Ive had a few modelers that simply didnt let me play the set because it had none of those options

There are modellers that do exactly that. EG Boss IR-2. This is for people like me who like tweaking, not afraid of options, have a good understanding of signal chain and maybe some understanding of synthesizers and old rack gear.
Oh just one other thing valve amps and pedals are not less complicated necessarily. My last pedalboard was stupidly complicated. Depends on the sounds you want to make. One of the reasons I went digital was to create the signal chains I wanted without the complication of physical boxes.

Effects are crazy good but not as good when it comes to amp sims, that’s why Steve Vai and Petrucci doesn’t use that part of the modeling.
To me ToneX pedal (amp) + Fractal (FM3) is the best combination
Vai and Petrucci use them only for effects, because amp and cab blocks add more latency and they are so attune to their playing, that 3ms of latency annoys them.
Would be great if you were sure about stuff.
Because for example amounts of amps/cabs per preset is kinda differentiating thing amongst units.
Its not even fun anymore: nor manufacturers nor reviewers actually presenting stuff and its capabilities in full in most cases.
Feels kinda mude.
