Thanks! Ya it could work for facetting with a bit more setup. I've done free hand facetting but nothing on precious stone. Still going strong after a year and hundreds of stones!
A bit of a delay in getting this video done as we've been out on mining trips. Other than maybe a speed control for the wheel, I don't have any plans for future updates, works really well as is!
The welding you did in the build video, was that spot welding? I'd feel more comfortable attempting that if so. Also, ive worked with amber a few times and noticed that it tends to stick on the things I sand with, I was using disposable stuff but I don't think I'd be able to remove it, did you have any issue with the residue the amber left on your flat lap? If you did successfully removed it would you minding sharing how? Thank you!
Thanks for your reply. I have been a week out of the internet in Wyoming so I couldn't get your answer. Maybe I can borrow some stuff to guild a flat lap.
@@RoughMarket We actually live in Oklahoma but were visiting our family. The temperature was sure nice and lots of good hounding there too. Long trip but you already know that LOL.
Can you girdle a cushon cut on this. There is no zero degrees. Only like 25 to 45. But you could get that by adding a cutout and lower level table for it.
Nice but I am going to build mine so there's enough clearance under the table to accommodate my legs and my chair. I would get a sore back leaning over that wheel.
Thanks Darius, almost all of the supplies I didn't find in person came from amazon. I've ordered things in the past on ebay but I found stuff on there to be unreliable. Amazon has everything you need, even the diamond disks.
If I understand your wiring correctly you have a male to male cord that plugs from your wall outlet into the GFI in your machine. If that is what you have, then this is very VERY dangerous. Having a male to male cord around could lead to someone, who doesn't know what they are looking at, to plug both ends into different wall outlets. If the two outlets are on different circuits then this is a fire waiting to happen. The best way to fix this is to take an extension cord, cut the female end off, and hardwire that into your GFI from inside. Snake the remainder of your cable out the bottom of the cabinet. For safety, add a strain relief so that if the cord gets pulled it won't damage your wire connections on the inside. If I have misunderstood how you have wired this then please disregard my comment.
Thanks! I bought the Aluminum backing plate on ebay for around $50, either Amazon or ebay works. I bought the disks there as well and they are just cheap electroplated ones.
thank you for your reply. can you please tell me the correct name said for the full coated diamond disc you have. cause amazon is only showing me saw blades for tiles and its getting frustrating. i would appreciate it very much.
Ya sometimes they can be hard to find. I'm in Canada so I use amazon.ca. Here is a disk I bought the other day; www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00HZ27KHM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 For amazon.com just search some or all of these key words "8 inch Grit 600 Quality Electroplated Diamond coated Flat Lap Disk wheel" The seller is "Kent Blades", they arrive really fast and great prices. Uxcell is another seller but I've only tried one of their disks and it seems alright, not sure how long it will last though as I just got it.
I've already started the video and building the cab machine. It's taking some time though, but hopefully should be done soon! Possibly a few weeks if spare time allows.
The ones I have I bought from amazon. They are just cheap ones around $18 US each. They don't last very long, and burn out quick with harder material. I didn't expect them to last and were more of a test really.
Dop sticks work sometimes and have their purpose. On a flat lap you have certain control with fingers you lose with a stick. No issues yet thankfully. Thanks for watching.
A dop stick allows the stone to be kept at exactly the same angle as it is held against the lap. This is because it is being held with the entire hand, not just three fingers. If the stick is rotated with the fingers of one hand, (while the stone itself is guided with fingers of the other if required,) it is possible to make perfectly domed cabochon with flat laps. Doping a stone makes much easier to make accurate facets as well.
@@brushbros I have to disagree that a dop sticks makes it much easier to get accurate facets, the final stone quality is 100% dependent on the Artisan. (It's the age old argument between hand carving vs. using power tools.) Dop sticks are your choice and I'm sure they work great for what you're working on. For me it's faster, with greater control, and less risky on some material for me personally without a dop stick. All the best in your projects!
Great build. And a wonderful video of your fingers. And then of the stone. The build is spot on.
Thanks Reno Rock. Ya because the stones are so small it's hard to get the camera angle without fingers in the way, ah well.
Nice setup!. You fix every thing that needed fix Glad to see the plug fix right safety always
Thanks Andy, yes I went pretty well and still running strong!
Love it , really interested in faceting gems so this type of machine could be just what I’m looking for to get started.
Thanks! Ya it could work for facetting with a bit more setup. I've done free hand facetting but nothing on precious stone. Still going strong after a year and hundreds of stones!
Exactly what I’m trying to do! 3d printed a facetor, now trying to set up something similar.
put it on a dob stick more control ,great machine, love it

I'd really love to see speed control,
Cool.
Was just wondering is it a wild idea to use an inverted bench grinder as a flat lap?🤔🤔
Tq..Tq..Tq from malaysia ❤
About how long do you spend on each grit?
very nice work by the way
Thanks Nick! It was pretty easy and cheap to build and still going strong!
Hi from brasil.
Wish i had a machine like that..
I have a lot of stones. Green transparent stones and blue Paraiba also.
👍😆
Hello from Canada, thanks for watching Attila. Send me an email, might be interested in what you have :) roughmarket@gmail.com

I just drove through Wyoming a few weeks ago on my way to Nevada, beautiful State you live in wow! Hope to get through there again some day.

Do you have more samples of gems you facet with this machine? Like have you used it on precious gems yet?
I don't do any faceting with this machine, strictly cabs. I do a lot of Opal but nothing precious as those typically have facets.
Nice updates. where did you purhase the valve?

What motor you used ?
Very nice machine. Can you tell me where you got the backing plate from? Thank you.

that thread shaft need a safety cap, because it could hurt your hand.. during the Polish

I wanted to buy like that machine you are made in????
What would you charge for an 8" machine? I do not have the tools to build. Thanks! Havagudun !
Hi E. D. Law, sorry I'm not making any for sale. You can buy great flat laps from mainstream companies but they are a bit pricey.
When are you going to do the video on the diy cabbing machine?
I've already started the video and building the cab machine. It's taking some time though, but hopefully should be done soon! Possibly a few weeks if spare time allows.
I'm looking forward to it, I've been a collector and now trying my hand at finishing, I built a flat top and been working with that.
Nice, you built one as well? How did it turn out?
It seams to work good, It's a six inch but I can expand to eight inch's. I have 300, 600 and a 3000 grit diamond plates to work with for starters.
You might check out Tim Barney or Reshape Nature on Facebook. He built his own lapidary machine.
How do you cut the girdle? No side slot
I don't, this isn't faceting, it's cabbing.
where did you get your lap grits ?
The ones I have I bought from amazon. They are just cheap ones around $18 US each. They don't last very long, and burn out quick with harder material. I didn't expect them to last and were more of a test really.
where can i get that flat full diamond coated metal disc
I buy all mine on Amazon. They have a range in price and I just buy the cheaper ones, they do last awhile unless you work with Agate a lot.
Using dop sticks will prevent faceting your finger tips.

I have been using a flat lap instead of a cabbing unit for fifteen years now. There is no argument.@@RoughMarket
hi sir
