As a newbie to art history, I have really been enjoying your videos. I always thought of art history as a dull foray into technique and the crazy art economy, but I'm beginning to see the field as a marvelous intersection between history, psychology, and economics. Thank you so much!
YOu did a really fantastic job with this video. I honestly wasn't that interested in the black maid, but you did a fantastic job telling that story as well - without going full social justice like most others.
THANK YOU for this!! Just last week I was telling my students about this work and about how Laure is so little discussed!! I will be sending them your video!
A bit late to the party but thanks for the informative explanation! I think from all YT-vids on Olympia this is the most accurate, stressing on time circumstances and Manets approach to realism. Another fact I have however recently learned from a video from French TV Arte, is that Victorine was homosexual, information I have not seen otherwise.
As a Caribbean history student and a Caribbean art student, it's interesting to see how certain things overlap. Sometimes I think that countries like France are so far away. Truthfully though, the world has one history and it's profound to see that huge events in the Caribbean which feels so small like the abolition of slavery aren't as small as I thought they were and truthfully, abolition changed the world all over. In other words, the world isn't as small as I thought.
What is the name/artist of the painting at timestamp 10:14 depicting the black woman washing the back of a white woman? I did a Google reverse image search and cannot locate any info about it. Thanks.

That means so much to me! Thank you ❤️
Wow exciting perspective. We knew Manet was rebelous with this piece but what an interesting new layer. Thanks for sharing!
