Mast General Store has been lucky enough to have them produce a special knife for us, The General , which started in a limited production run and since then, based on customer feedback, we have been asking for more. The topo map on the side is Grandfather Mountain of NC, which is local to Winkler (I think he has a house on or near that mountain). That makes this a triple North Carolina knife (maker, co-brand, mountain)
If you look closely, yes there is the topo, but also the topo is overlaid with the actual profile of grandfather mountain ridge, you can see the distinctive profile shape just as if you were looking at the mountain
Excellent review! One point rarely discussed with most, if not all, of the Winkler models is the generous Ricasso area Winkler designs into his blades. This allows for a very comfortable pinch grip while still leaving the entire length of the blade accessible for detail work.
Do you think this would make a good knife for processing deer? I was looking at the blue ridge hunter… but the grandfather mountain engraving on this knife is really appealing to me!
Winkler General is now the Winkler Huntsman. I was in downtown Ashville in April 2022 and visited the Mast General Store. I got a chance to handle this knife, and the very customer service oriented employee, said that they would no longer be available once their current inventory was sold. The employee said that Winkler was going to start making a production knife and the General would be discontinued. I did buy the knife, and when I looked to buy another one in August, Mast General Store was sold out and would not have any more coming from Winkler, but that the new replacement knife (without the topo map handle) would be available by Christmas 2022.
Wow I didn’t know about that model either. I want a drop point crusher and a sd2 but am struggling on which one to buy first haha now I want this one and maybe not the sd2. Would love to see them compacted one on one!!
Ive been eyeing the Survival Striker myself. I do not have an SD2 to make the comparison but I do have a Jaeger and the SD2 is similar to both of those. I cannot recommend Winkler enough so I would say go for it. I dont have experience with that model but I have reviewed a total of 3 winklers and they are awesome
Winkler is great. Anything from Winkler is crazy, crazy overpriced. Having said that, the sheath and knife combo is freaking handsome. Really freaking nice looking
They are somewhat overpriced. I think the fit and finish, the design, the heat treatment and the sheath are on par of what I expect at this pricepoint. The steel is the largest aberration for me. 3v or similar would be my expectation.

There seem to be layers and layers to Winkler knives. Whenever I add a review, I learn something new from my viewers. That is so awesome!

I do. Might be a tad small the Belt Knife might suit you better if you want a longer blade

Thats too bad because the General is a great knife. I looked up the Huntsman, its a bit different from the General. Glad you were able to pick one up!
For size comparison fixed blades I’d suggest maybe the standard Mora knife, Kabar, Esee Izula. Those are pretty common use knives.

Could be EDC, more than woods knife I would say camp knife. I usually pair it with a larger blade.
