    What are some of your favourite non-English language series?

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha. I am assuming this is a joke...

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Yeah but I can't always tell, because I don't always know what you're talking about.
      For example, this one here.
      I am assuming this has some link with poontang, which is something to do with Vietnamese prostitutes and their 'parts', I believe made popular by Full Metal Jacket. Maybe... I dunno. My introduction to this concept was as a kid when my favourite cricketer was named Ricky Ponting. He later went on to become one of the most celebrated Australian cricketers ever, but not when I was young, he was just a good player back then.
      But this guy I hung around called him Poon-tang, which one day he semi-explained to me, just saying that it was a euphamism.
      So I come to your joke with only some of the context that you might be referring to. The same thing happened with the apocalypse and Australian asking for a doughnut joke. Like, is it meant to be that Australians are stupid or just that we eat a lot? Both may be true but I don't "get" the joke.

      There's a French crime series "La forêt" which we liked a lot. I enjoyed the first season of Brazilian "3%" but that may be due to Lusophilia. Many people in my circle of friends enjoyed "Les revenants" but I don't dig zombies :)
      Stay away from 1983, the Polish series, where the writers seem to have tried a new recipe: let's keep ALL the ideas from the brainstorm. The dozens of story lines quickly grow apart and it takes an army of deux ex machina to bring them back together, or in most cases, not.

      Stumbled upon your channel today. Absolutely delighted.
      Personally, I haven't done a top 10 list yet and am not sure if I can frame it the way you did. Off-hand, I'm more inclined to ranking individual seasons rather than shows. If so, Trapped Season 1 has to be at the top for me, way above anything else. Again off-hand, I might give the second spot to Braquo Season 1.
      But if I look at shows in totality, I'd rate Millennium the highest (assuming we can call it a show). If not, I'd probably rank The Bridge the highest followed by Trapped and Wallander. There would also be some names that are not on your list: Hinterland and Four Seasons in Havana. I'm not sure where exactly I'd place them.
      I haven't seen Undercover as yet but you've given me a reason to. I haven't seen A Very Secret Service or Fauda either but for watching those, I guess I'll need a lot more encouragement.

    Dude you don't know how grateful I am that I found my your channel. I knew I could trust your critiques when you did one on money heist and my god you were right. Most of the tv reviewers on this platform are either having terrible taste/critiques or are straight up sell outs. You just introduced me to hours of quality entertainment and are even (mostly) available on netflix. For months I was looking for reviewers that do international tv I could trust. And behold I found your channel. You have good taste. For that, thanks.

      Haha - well it doesn't matter anymore because we're heading into winter, but the problem with a fan would be the noise. My sound isn't even that great as it is, but yeah I was using a fan between takes.
      Thanks for your support! I have some reviews still over on my other channel (this channel is my second when I decided to split two kinds of content that I make) but yeah my reviews from this late 2019 onwards are generally better than the older ones.

  • @edbouhl3100
    @edbouhl3100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    My wife and I got about 2 episodes into “Trapped’ and decided the pace was too slow. We did enjoy “The Valhalla Murders” though. We throughly enjoyed all 4 seasons of “The Bridge” after first seeing “The Tunnel” Fr/En version. “Bordertown” was too dark for her and missing the police partner dynamic that she prefers but I just finished Season 3 and very much enjoyed it. “Deadwind” was fun too.
    We live in Los Angeles so we’re largely limited to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video for our foreign tv offerings. We’ve decided that we much prefer to watch in the original languages with English subtitles to get all the emotional nuances from the original actors. Neither of us has lived in Europe (some vacations though) so part of the appeal is learning more about the countries. For example in “Deadwind” we thought she was doing a lot of unlawful entry until I checked Google and found Finnish police don’t need search warrants.
    Thanks for all the suggestions!

      @@huzaifanazir363 More twists doesn't make a better series. The reason season 1 didn't have as many twists was that the whole thing was so inherently logical. • @iamnobody2241

      First on my list would be Kingdom, I enjoyed watching it because it’s a zombie in Joseon era. So for me that’s refreshing because it’s the first time for zombie genre and the setting is from ancient times. And I am glad that it didn’t focus on love story. I’m not a hater of love stories but if I have seen series that has been ruined because they focused too hard on love angle only. Second would be Vagabond and while others didn’t enjoy it exactly, I loved it because I’m into action. The sound of your heart, it’s the only Korean comedy that really made me laugh. That’s all for now.

    • @michaelmaps2004
      @michaelmaps2004 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iamnobody2241 ok thanks. I watched Vagabond on Netflix and waiting for the 2nd season. I haven't watched Kingdom yet since im not into zombies but I'll try The sound of your heart. There are a few good ones on Netflix but the rest are trash love stories and comedies. I prefer good serious korean dramas

    • @iamnobody2241
      @iamnobody2241 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As in you don’t want to take a look for at least 15 minutes of the first time episode of Kingdom? Most of the Korean series for TV are made with consideration of minors. Since watching TV is a family thing at night so I can’t think much of seriously heavy stuff, most of what I have seen are light drama with of course love story. Light comedies with love story, with the exception of The Good Manager. Or maybe because there’s not much selection on Netflix in my region. So I haven’t seen something similar to Vagabond. But then you can try their movies on that area they have a lot of good stuff like Old Boy.

    • @michaelmaps2004

      @@iamnobody2241 I'm just not into zombie stuff but i will give it a try and check out the Good manager as well. 10 years ago when my ex introduced me to korean stuff i used to find good ones but now i can't. Even their period dramas about palace stories are usually good as well

    I am fr Singapore and this past decade I have just about watched exclusively Scandi-Nordic-noir (which includes Finland, Poland, Iceland, Belgium & Netherlands, France & Germany, Italy & Spain).
    Scandi & Nordic unbeatable, so good, such great , stories well told.
    I do agree with your list (perhaps the order re-juggled, no Biggie).
    My all-time best fave is Borgen.
    My fave best actor is Ville Virtenen (spelling, Finland).
    (Then there's Beck & Wallander.)
    Fr the UK I'd draw yr attention to Morse, Lewis, Endeavour, Vera, Foyle's War, to name but five 5.
    All best for 2025, cheers!

    Hatufim - my first Israeli series. Maybe I was moved by it because it’s the first tv show I have seen that’s about the conflicts of two countries. And about terrorism. Our series are mainly about love stories & poverty so Hatufim is entirely new to me.
    Lehiyot Ita - another Israeli but it’s a love story. I’m not good in explaining but it’s different from all other love stories I have seen.
    Hashoter Hatov - comedy. I’m pestering Netflix when other seasons will come out.
    Srugim & Shtisel.

      I actually saw Parasite at the cinema (I'm Australian though, not British)... but the reason I didn't review it was that I felt like I didn't quite... GET it? Like, I understood it. I understood some of the ideas being expressed, but I felt that I lacked the knowledge of Asian and Korean cinema to actually make a good review. Like, I watched Chris Stuckmann's review a while after I saw it and was like "It probably IS as good as he says... but I don't feel like I saw it for what it was."
      So I didn't want to review it when I didn't feel like I'd properly understood it. But I might watch it again and then do a review.

I understand the eurocentricity of these reviews (we are all a product of our sociocultural backgrounds, after all), but please don't say "that's just the way life is in those places" ... it is a dangerous transgression from reviewing a show with personal and subjective opinions, to making a false social commentary about a region and its people and the lives they live.

    I was hoping to see Occupied on here. Is it one you didn’t like or haven’t seen yet? Also, the American remake of The Killing is pretty good, but the American remake of The Bridge is awful.

      Hey - Occupied, I watched 2 episodes and never continued (possibly more out of life circumstances than actually disliking the series) but I doubt it would have made it in anyway. The American remake of the Killing bored me to tears... I mean the first season of the Danish one isn't even that exciting (it's good but it's veeeeery slow) but once your remove Sara Lund from that equation, but keep exactly the same repetitive music score, I just couldn't deal. I made it through like 7 episodes.
      These days I ONLY watch foreign stuff (except Chernobyl, I made an exception for that) because my life is just too full to be making these as well as watching any English speaking thing that comes along.
      Thanks for the comment! (And thanks for actually listening to the thing about either not having seen it or not including it.)

    Couldn't agree more. Especially the emotional connect part. Just discovered your channel. ❤️ Watched all of the series mentioned except Undercover and A very secret service. On my watchlist now.

      These days I would also add Caliphate but that was made well after this list.

    Think "Borgen" and Babylon Berlin" would fit very nicely on this list.

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for your comment. I felt Borgen was a bit boring. I never got around to watching Babylon Berlin... the lack of anything other than English subtitles on Netflix was part of that.

    I wonder if you’ve seen the French series The Bureau. I found it to be an incredibly compelling espionage thriller.

      I was watching it while I was learning French but when I put French on hold I also put the series on hold. I'll see it one day haha.
