Investigation of the Deceiving Fox- Lunatic Scoring (9.5 billion, Sanae)

  • would've been nice to get 10 billion but I'm pretty happy with this run for now. Stage 1 final section wasn't great (i killed the fairy too early and lost out on some piv, I've entered Reimu with just over 300k piv before), and tsukasa was pretty sloppy (dying with 2 bombs in stock and a shield active on spell 1? really, rose? non 2 wasn't great either. and i'd rather have gotten into the final spell safespot first try instead of dying and then frantically trying to get an extend in case i mess up again)
    Sanae is an interesting shot type for scoring in this game. Her shot type is excellent at clearing out stage sections and scooping up all the available point items. Her shield doubles the value of point items, generates more lives than I know what to do with, and the generated point items effectively increase the value of her shield bonuses (still not as large as Sakuya's shield bonuses, though.) And her special ability is a larger grazebox which is neat.
    And then there's her bomb. Which, for the purposes of scoring this game, is pretty abysmal. See, what you want to do in a lot of places is use your bomb to get i-frames and then use those i-frames to get tons of graze for piv and shields. Sanae's bomb, meanwhile, clears bullets in an area centered on you (which is bad for graze), and does tons of damage (which can end up killing fairies or bosses, stopping them from spawning any more bullets which is also bad for graze.)
    It's not quite as bad as it sounds, though; lasers still work perfectly fine to graze, and due to a quirk of how graze works in ph3sx (and possibly ph3), if you graze bullets on the frame they get despawned, they still count towards piv, but not towards shields. (Watch Takane midnon to see this in action.) It's still pretty bad, though.
    As a result, I end up resorting to some rather interesting strategies in places. There are several deliberate deaths with bombs in stock (including the first section of the game) so that I can use the respawn i-frames to graze bullets without clearing bullets or damaging enemies.
    I think Sanae and Sakuya are probably the highest-scoring shots in this game (they both have ways to boost score gains that I don't think Reimu and Marisa can keep up with) but I'm not sure which has the most potential, although I think it might be Sanae. Sanae is definitely the more forgiving of the two, with all the extra lives she gets, although you need some routing to maximize the value of her shield in lategame (since items are worth double value during shields.)
    one other fun note: the safespot in oppressive four is theoretically suboptimal for non-sanae shot types since they can actually graze more lasers in the regular lanes than in the safespot; Sanae is different because of her larger grazebox. (Of course, it's still much easier to do it in the safespot regardless of shot.)
