Rock Island VR80 Shotgun - Review and Mods

  • I've owned this Rock Island Armory VR80 for 4 months now, and here are my 2 cents. I upgraded the stock/grip right off the bat, and had to polish the trigger sears to fix the trigger resetting issue. Probably the first 50 rounds or so, it was having failures cycling properly, with a failure about once in every 10 shots, but 2 boxes of 3" 00 buckshot solved that real quick! Other than that, no other issues and I absolutely love this gun! Shoots everything I run through it now, and I haven't even cleaned it yet after probably 300+ rounds so far.
    Please like, share, subscribe - it'd really help me out. Thanks!

    I bought one last summer! Love the look and feel! Like you, put a magpull stock and grip on it! Also changed out rail and put a mod key rail on it! Plus angled grip on bottom of rail. Came with 2-5round mags, and 1-9round mag. Added 2 more 9 round mags and 2 extra 2 round mags for Turkey. Bought a Carlson's X-tra full choke for it. Based on Beretta choke pattern threads I believe! For turkey I'll be using Winchester Extended Long Range 3 inch number 5 shot! Modified choke was in barrel when bought. My only problem so far with 7 or 8 shot light loads was extraction issues! Might run 3-4 rounds then jam. Clear jam, then same thing. Fired 50 rounds. One guy in Montana suggested that ears on upper back of magazine's needed to be lightly filed down. Another having same problem drilled out gas port a little bigger, I believe to .112 diameter which I haven't done as yet. I have an Eotech 512 series sight I can put on picatinny rail, or for turkey, a TruGlo Gobble dot specifically made for turkey. Armscor had a special that if you bought the gun from I think May of 2022 through possibly Sept. with proof of purchase, you'd get $125 in credit on their site for upgraded parts, shotgun shells, etc. Received 9 boxes of 12 gauge #6 shot and 1- 2 round magazine! I only would use the 2 round magazine plus one already chambered for a total of 3, as that is what some states allow! The gun looks like a damn fine street sweeper also if need be and enough loaded mags if ever needed in that sense. But mainly a AR 15 style shotgun that my main intent is a shorter cool effects turkey gun and in a pinch, home defense firearm! I also paid about $600 for it! What I'd like to add next is a 20 round drum😊

    Hey, I don't usually leave negative comments & I don't want you to think I'm just being critical, however if you're doing firearm videos, it's important that you think about consequences to your actions because people who don't know better are looking at you as an example. Therefore using, maintaining & stressing "proper gun safety" is a must. #1 Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy! #2 always assume a firearm is loaded. & Never look down the barrel of a loaded firearm!!! You may think "I know what I'm doing" but think of the bad example you are setting for those watching who don't necessarily know what they're doing, & lastly you gotta work on your stance when firing. But with that being said, otherwise it was a pretty good & informative review, with some practice you can make some great videos, so keep it up!

    • @SawtoothWild
      @SawtoothWild  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the cycling issues were probably the first 25 rounds of use, after shooting a box of 00 buckshot, it was resolved. The stock and grip was extremely easy, I mean, like 3 screws and it's off. The grip has a screw through the inside like a standard AR15 grip, reuse that screw for the replacement grip.

    mine won't cycle the clear plastic shells. and I shoot high velocity stuff and it's broken in. I use the light buffer tube. I've had 1600 fps clear see through slugs and buckshot and it gets stuck everytime. any other high brass will cycle. what kind of stock is that I'm gonna get one?

    • @SawtoothWild
      @SawtoothWild  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried any clear shells yet and I'm not even sure where I can buy some in my town. Have you found anything that the heavy buffer is better for? The stock and grip are both Magpul MOE. Remember to get the commercial sized stock, not mil-spec.

      @@SawtoothWild I thought I seen you shoot some clear ones I gotta watch again. I think it's the cheaper plastic shells that don't cycle. I dont shoot 3 inch shell I never used the heavy buffer. lol the 2 3/4 ones I shoot are 1450 to 1710 fps they kick really hard. but its all good I just have tobuy the more expensive quality shells

    What buffer tube are you running?

    • @SawtoothWild
      @SawtoothWild  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's the stock one that was on the gun from the factory. It's "commercial spec", but it won't accept any typical buffer tube. The buffer weight and spring is completely different inside, and the inside bore size is way smaller than normal tubes.

    Dude all it takes is for one person to screw up and shoot themselves or worse someone else and then for that person to say that they got his/her techniques from you and your channel for you to be hit with a lawsuit or something. You have always always got to consider what the consequences COULD BE especially when handling a firearm!!

      How is he going to get hurt exactly? There was no shell in the chamber so it's impossible for it to fire. It's as unsafe as disassembling it and holding just the barrel to look down it. Or are you one of the weirdos that thinks you can never look down a gun barrel once it gets rifling cut into it?

    • @SawtoothWild

      I don't think there's anything off an AR10 that will fit on this gun, and vice versa, except the pistol grip, iron sights, and maybe an magpul adjustable stock.

    This is my problem with your video friend: 1. You Need to learn and utilize a better tactical stance...
    2. and never ever point the barrel at your face known to be unloaded or not by yourself let alone on video you will give others bad unsafe habbits...
    3. And come on man... ya gotta have some enthusiasm with what your doing on video for others...
    4. Sit down and Be more clear on the take down for people to see if you mean to do some decent know how for your watchers...!
    Just some constructive criticism to make you a better gun you for others sake otherwise thanks for maken it keep it up...!
