What a wide variety of responses. Some of you are being very harsh and very wrong. Luis is a good photographer, interacts well with the subjects and understands his equipment. A plus is his appreciation of the fantastic coffee.
That was really fun to watch. Enjoyed how casual it was, and I enjoyed the stories you created with your visuals. This type of shooting is very different from how I work, but extremely appealing as it seems like you can take in your environment much more and not think so hard about nabbing critical focus and composition.
Excellent video. I really enjoyed your enthusiasm, liveliness, lovely photos and of course that awesome lens! You say it may not be the best 28mm Leica make, but it sure has character. Great lens
Muy buen video que demuestra las cualidades del Summaron 28mm como lente para street photography. Dan ganas de estar en Little Havana con el fotografo!
Those photos convinced me to get the lens and I love it! Like you said, it’s not the best Leica makes. But because it’s so small, I take it everywhere. And we all know what the best camera is. So this lens, to me, is often the best
Nice video! Now you should shoot the new TTArtisan 28mm F5.6 M vs the 2017 Summaron-M 28/5.6 side by side - with 1:1 sample comparsion, this would give your channel also a boost! :)
I was at domino park almost a year later and photographed the same guy with the shades on.. I could tell when I was there he was very dedicated to his domino game.
I had a go of the this leica lens a few weeks ago when i took my 90's 35mm summilux asph. in for repair. Hand's down this is the most fun lens for a leica...it's small light and you can guess--ti-mate focus. on an m10 it would be amazing as you have better high iso images than on my m9. if i had the money i would definitely get one.
video is great, lens design is great, very vintage looking. love it. but for street photography shooting too close to the subject...is that a good thing?
I like to think of the difference between shooting street photography with a 50 vs a 28 as the longer lens feeling like an observer and the wider lens feeling like a participant in the action, given that you aren't too far away.
Thanks for the feedback. The video was shot with the Leica SL using Leica TL and SL lenses (mostly the 35 f/1.4 TL). You can see the full tech details in the video description by clicking "Show More".
In terms of absoulte image quality, the 35mm Summicron-M ASPH would be far superior to the 28mm Summaron. We're talking about a vintage design from the 1950s vs. a modern-era design with exotic glass and ashperical elements. But... the Summaron offers a classic look for those that want modern lens construction.
Wouldn't the modern coatings defeat the purpose of a vintage lens for a vintage look, at least for some people? I know at the very high end of cinema lenses, Cooke provides an option to do away with modern coating (or maybe all coatings, period) to get a very vintage look. Seems like a lens like this should be going for that.
mainly interiror shots and under shade i would have thought a summicron or faster is really what you would need. the ability to push to asa 5000 is great but to do it to get the film look makes me think you could buy an m6 and lots and lots and lots of film (enough film that leica will probably bring out a new monochrome and the deep pocket's of modern m users will start burning) and get that look for real. This lens would shine in super bright open street's I'm sure.
That's the Artisan & Artist* ACAM7100, which has been discontinued. The closest bag is the ACAM7100N, which is a limited release of the same basic bag, but in a gray fabric, rather than the original black. Here's a link to the bag: leicastoremiami.com/collections/artisan-artist/products/artisan-artist-limited-edition-acam-7100n-canvas-camera-bag
Pilotfly H2. Just be aware you can't use the 24-90 on it as the camera will never balance with that much weight on the front. The smaller TL lenses work great though.
Great video, thanks. To be honest, I just don't get this lens at all. It's slow. It's expensive, even within the Leica line-up. It's built for small size but something that diminutive is dwarfed by the M240, out of balanced, and just seems pointless. It would seem too small even for an MP (or the rumoured M10). It's a lens that would live more comfortably on a body the size of an M3. It just doesn't ring true for me. Little Havana, other the other hand, looks great!
Glad you like the video and thanks for the comment. Little Havana is a great location to shoot. The Summaron isn't for everyone. It's not a cutting edge design like the 28 Summilux ASPH by any means. And it's not meant to be a mass produced item. What the lens is: extremely small and offering a classic look for those that are going for that. Just a different tool in the toolbox. Don't worry, Leica makes three other great, modern 28mm lenses if the vintage thing isn't for you.
Yes, absolutely. I do have to say that I love the idea of manufacturing the classic lenses again. There are certainly a few of the old lenses that I *would* seriously consider if they enjoyed an optical re-calculation, coatings and were manufactured new. (The classic chrome 50mm f/1.4 Summilux-M II is one that leaps to mind.) It's just that the choice of this particular lens to market test the "classic redesign" concept doesn't resonate with me. Leica knows its customer base far better than I do, so no doubt they chose this lens for good commercial reasons. It may be that it was also a simpler design to cut their "lens resurrection" teeth on the first time. Or perhaps it's just one of the lenses that had no real equivalent in the modern Leica lens line-up. I hope there's more to follow.
This lens is what I've been waiting for! The old ones have poor coatings if any and sooo many issues with haze etc.. Leica made this lens for shooters like myself who never shoot anything faster then f5.6. I'm usually 90% shooting at f8 and f11 on my film MP. - Thanks to RDF for making this vid on this lens. I think no one else has done so on youtube.
I agree. Some more classics with modern coatings would be awesome. The 50 Lux could be a great one, for sure! I think the 28 Summaron was chosen due to its extremely compact size and the recent rise in popularity of "pancake" lenses.
Yes i know but why go to e expesive route if u can go for a cheaper route for e job? Yes u can shoot in whatever F u like. Whats e point of this vid actually? The 'new' summaron is sharp at f11? Or the 'new' summaron will make ur leica a point and shoot camera? Get what im saying?
Be very frank, the video framing is far better and comfortable than the still photography framing. I don’t think the man knows about 28mm, certainly doesn’t know how lens will see. Why Leica kept pick out young photographers to try their new products?
This is a horrendously bad review. The photographer barely puts his eye behind the camera in any of the shots. He acts more like a press photographer with a wide angle lens at the end of a sporting event, rather than a street photographer walking around with a M-system + 28mm lens. He could have taken any of the shots shown with his phone, a SLR, a DSLR, or any Mirrorless camera system. No reason to walk around with ~$13,000 worth of gear if you don't exemplify the benefits of how to use a Rangefinder system. Yes, the photographer zone-focuses at f/11, but then he barely, if ever, puts the camera to his eye for a shot. Most are taken an arm's length away from his body with the camera directly in the subject's face - not so inconspicuous.
It is true, the video is better composed than the still shots ! There is some famous street photographers like Mark Cohen or Daniel Arnold who use the rangefinfer without framing in the viewfinder. They know so well the angle of the lens that every images is dynamic and composed. Before to practice like this, this photographer have to work more... He shoot rubbish subjects, without any interest and bad composed.
NAS NISMO I'm pretty sure you can use a camera however you like, pretty dumb move from the manufacturer to not make it lock up if not in contact with your eyeball at all times otherwise. They should probably stop making lenses that can be closed down as well.
This is a beautiful video. Love the way you capture the feel of Little Havana along with the joy of photography.
What a wide variety of responses. Some of you are being very harsh and very wrong. Luis is a good photographer, interacts well with the subjects and understands his equipment. A plus is his appreciation of the fantastic coffee.
Bravo! One of the most beautiful and well edited reviews I've seen on TH-cam. Please, more like this!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
The quality of the lens and the camera are actually highlighting the issues in photographic composition. ("...a sharp image of a fuzzy concept")
Love this little lens. When I shoot with flash in the street ala Gilden, Kim, etc. it works great.
Ive watched this video 100x just for the soundtrack and feel of MIA
Haha. Nice!
That was really fun to watch. Enjoyed how casual it was, and I enjoyed the stories you created with your visuals. Good Job Kid. I am also a Miami photographer. NO better place to be a photographer than Miami. Keep up the good work. great video and lens review.
I'm a 35 guy shooting the summarit, but you gave me something to think about as another lens. Thanks....well done!
Muy buen video que demuestra las cualidades del Summaron 28mm como lente para street photography. Dan ganas de estar en Little Havana con el fotografo!

Awesome video, I feel exactly the same about 35mm vs 28mm, with 35 being the "50" and 28 being the "new 35".
Love the look of Summaron. Looking forward to getting one for my M10-R.
Good choice!
I still love this style video please make more in this style.
Thanks. We'll certainly be looking to do more in the future. These are fun to make, just extremely time consuming to produce.
Your review convinced me to buy this lens. Astonishing on M10.
Still have it?
Nice video! Now you should shoot the new TTArtisan 28mm F5.6 M vs the 2017 Summaron-M 28/5.6 side by side - with 1:1 sample comparsion, this would give your channel also a boost! :)
what a beautiful lens! it looks so vintage though
I was at domino park almost a year later and photographed the same guy with the shades on.. I could tell when I was there he was very dedicated to his domino game.
love this video so much
All my videos on my channel are Leica SL never had such an amazing camera for both video and stills!! 💯🙏🏽🔥🔥
I subscribed more for the music than the camera/lens even though they are great too.
Pepe Montes & His Conjuto are great, right?
I had a go of the this leica lens a few weeks ago when i took my 90's 35mm summilux asph. in for repair. Enjoyed this. Looks like a good addition to my growing lens options as well
Interesante recorrido visual por la pequeña Habana
Hi! 5:33 Inside the bar, with the girl, what ISO did you use it? Thanks and Congrats!
I really enjoyed the video. Well done and some excellent images.
Great review, thank you! How do you set your camera to shoot like this, not even looking and getting accurate pictures anyway?
Nice video, makes me consider the summaron for my M 9
great review of a great looking lens , going to save up for one , it will look great on my leica safari
Great review again... Sigue así!
What a great video. Little Havana looks like a great spot.
Thanks. Little Havana is definitely a great spot if you are ever in Miami.
video is great, lens design is great, very vintage looking. love it. but for street photography shooting too close to the subject...is that a good thing?
For me, I haven't got the shot if I'm not close enough.
I like to think of the difference between shooting street photography with a 50 vs a 28 as the longer lens feeling like an observer and the wider lens feeling like a participant in the action, given that you aren't too far away.
This is the good stuff! This video makes me want a Leica!
Nice video, cute guy and wow that chrome lens looks so cool on the black body :))
Great video man!
Outstanding presentation, still photography and cinematography. Consider me subscribed. (BTW, what camera and lens was this filmed with? Thanks!)
Thanks for the feedback. The video was shot with the Leica SL using Leica TL and SL lenses (mostly the 35 f/1.4 TL). You can see the full tech details in the video description by clicking "Show More".
Thank you!
Ahora quiero un poquito de buen Ron, y sentarme con esos señores a jugar domino... buenas fotos...
Is this 28 better than a 35mm summicron?

RedDotForum thanks 🙏
Hi there.. does it fit Olympus om-d e-m10 mark II ??!
more little havana with cuban music please. especially with such great subjects to shoot
what is the best 28mm leica m lens to you:)?
Wouldn't the modern coatings defeat the purpose of a vintage lens for a vintage look, at least for some people? nice session
Cafecito! Nice picts for this review, thanks!
really like your video
Thank you!
What brand of camera strap?

Some people just love to waste money. $2600 for a 28/2.8? Please. 500 bucks, tops...
Brilliant thx 👍
What bag is that?

This lens is a collectors' piece for glass cases guys. Completely impracticable. Get a Summicron f/2 asph. best 28mm there is bar none.
What gimbal are you using with the SL?
Pilotfly H2. Just be aware you can't use the 24-90 on it as the camera will never balance with that much weight on the front. The smaller TL lenses work great though.
A this point, the iPhone 11 Pro suffices with its equivalent 28mm lens and f1.8 on a super crop sensor.
Great video, thanks.
To be honest, I just don't get this lens at all.
It's slow.

Yes, it would certainly be more at home on an MP than an overweight M240.

I think the 28 Summaron was chosen due to its extremely compact size and the recent rise in popularity of "pancake" lenses.
Awesome
It's not a 50s design but a 30s. I know all about this lens because I had a long conversation with the woman who designed it.
John snow ?
iso 5000 in bright sunlight ??? wow...
Homies name is Robert Capa, not Mike...
"And like Capa said, 'If you're pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough.'" Like, not Mike. :)
35mm and 50mm are over rated until you work with the 28mm
Asere tu eres cubano ? :D
Why would anyone pay $2600 for a 28mm f5.6???
videographer's skill is more of yours
The Cuban spanish is the best spanish after the mexican.
Are you Aziz Ansari
Luis is not Aziz, but Aziz is a very cool dude.
You're not 'close' enough - emotionally.

drwatson12345 he was zone focusing, he has a style, cant imaging him in there close with a dlsr, i thought he done good,
He's at f/11 bioootch.
get a sony, something like the a6300, and it'll be better than this.
Awesome review. Excellent Photographer, amazing photos, inspiring. I will definitely plan a photo shoot in Little Havana soon. Thanks for sharing.
F11, don't even bother to see what is in the frame. Wow, what a waste of camera equipment.
But that's like every 28 as long as your happy with the rendering which is subjective. I do like the focusing knob and formfactor though.
Still preferable above using it as a wind break for instagram lattes. XD
Yea. Not looking at the viewfinder n shoot like that? Better off using an iphone and save 5grand.
