DO NOT TRY this Oven Cleaner Furniture Hack (please!)

  • In 2021 furniture flippers and influencers and DIYers started stripping wood finish with Easy Off Oven Cleaner. This viral trend is blowing up on TikTok, Instagram, and TH-cam, but is it effective? Is it safe? Today I'm going to look up the ingredients in oven cleaner and share with you the reasons why I think this "hack"/trend of is not only ineffective, but also potentially dangerous.
    Oven cleaner is NOT meant for porous wood furniture!
    Here's a link to the Environmental Working Group website where they share the ingredients in oven cleaner and the different concerns about toxicity of oven cleaner chemicals.
    www.ewg.org/guides/cleaners/1...
    Please do not try this oven cleaner furniture hack. Try a safer stripper, like Citristrip (now comes in a spray!) instead. I will be doing a video in late January about a safer stripper just about to hit market-- I'll film it as soon as I get it in the mail!

    I want to add that I did cross reference the ingredients listed on the EWG (nonprofit non-governmental organization) with the ingredients list on the bottles of the oven cleaner, and I did also look up the products on the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, part of the federal government) and I could not find any Easy Off products or Oven Cleaner products that meets their standards for "safer choice" products. As I mentioned in the video, if you don't like the source I use, please check the labels of the products yourself, and look into possible harm these products can cause.

      Just curious, have you looked up the chemical data sheets for chemical strippers? If not, you should. Side effects are very similar to oven cleaner, stating respiratory concerns, cancer, and reproductive issues to name a few.

    I make soap from scratch and I use lye...with full on safety gear
    It MUST be neutralized. That's an absolute must because if not, it will remain in the product and ANY moisture will activate it. Why would anyone use this on wood or wood product furniture where it will wind up inside the wood fibers and remain there?
    Water does not neutralize lye. It weakens it until it's dry and then any remainder has a corrosive strength. I was shocked to see one of my favorite furniture flippers use this and she has a teaching degree! It was just shocking! THANK YOU for doing this video.

    Thank you, thank you, Clara, for putting this video out into the furniture flipping/restoring community! Oven cleaner on furniture screams toxic!
    Against my better judgment, I went along with a friend and did this treatment. We did use a power sprayer and am hoping we removed the residue left from the oven cleaner, but really have no way of truly knowing.
    Any thoughts from anyone as to how to move forward from this process? I'm thinking that the best option is to seal with shellac and go from there with a finish.
    I'm also thinking of a particular IG gal who has a house full of this processed furniture. While it's beautiful, I can't help but wonder how healthy her home is. . .🤪

    That was a great video that needed to be done. It’s a good thing you have credentials and access to expert help. Oven cleaner is problematic on ovens, let alone on anything else. It’s just plain nuts used on furniture. There is no way these manufacturers would endorse any off label use like that. Even if the stuff was food grade ( or even food ) it still has to be hosed off, which is disastrous. Looking forward to the spray stripper video.

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Emily. I am aware the EWG is not perfect and certainly don't want to be peddling fear! I felt that I had to get this message out as soon as possible to counteract the viral nature of this trend that influential people are actively encouraging people to try, and that, unfortunately, meant that I wasn't able to read and analyze a bunch of peer-reviewed studies and articles in scientific journals about each chemical/ingredient and the uses and dangers of them before recording this!! What sites do you turn to for information that you find credible? I want to add that I did cross reference the ingredients listed on the EWG (nonprofit non-governmental organization) with the ingredients list on the bottles of the oven cleaner, and I did also look up the products on the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, part of the federal government) and I could not find any Easy Off products or Oven Cleaner products that meets their standards for "safer choice" products. I also mentioned in the video, if the viewer doesn't like the source I use, for them to please check the labels of the products themself, and look into possible harm these products can cause. I also read the safety and use labels of the oven cleaner, and they recommended that you wear long gloves, do not get it on skin etc. Thanks for watching!

      @@TheColombianCowgirl Excellent point. Imagine a child chewing on furniture when teething. Or in that case, your dog. Sounds extreme but who knows 🙄

      Since we don’t know i don’t want to speculate, but what I DO know is that it is harmful to touch and to breathe and that’s enough reason for me to say no!

    I think oven cleaner is good cheap way to strip furniture but it is concerning that people may be exposing themselves and children or pets to harmful chemicals. I would suggest people limit using this technique to decorative furniture that they won't be in contact with and won't eat on or place dishes and plates on, for example picture frames, mirrors, shelves, tv console, lamps. Also to wear gloves, safety goggles, and industrial standard masks when spraying, in a well ventilated area. I would also suggest removing it in the shower or with a wet sponge outside instead of creating dangerous runoff and treating furniture after to seal the pores in the wood. At the end of the day, stripper and oven cleaner are both really bad in prolonged exposure. Great video! I agree many people don't know how to handle and dispose of chemicals.

    I rarely paint anymore just selling as-is (good condition furniture) and home decor since last year. I want to stay away from (additional) chemicals. When I saw the bleach and oven cleaner video I was shocked knew it was not for me! I will not sacrifice my health over extra few bucks.

    God bless you honey! The first time I saw this done I was absolutely appalled. To put oven cleaner all over a piece of furniture and then hose it down because you couldn’t get the paint off and then reapply and do it again? The chemicals from that same oven cleaner were leaking into the ground water affecting worms, bugs, and any poor unsuspecting animal that might try to eat them or drink from the puddle of water or take a quick bath in it! 😱. I love watching TH-cam but I expect the people I watch to be responsible. I will delete anyone from my subscription list who encourages this practice.

      Thanks, Judy! There are a lot of questions and unknowns, and hypothetical concerns, but just knowing that it's not good to breathe or touch is enough for me to say no thanks! I appreciate your comment.

    If you care about having a livable planet for your children, grandchildren, or future generations, please DISLIKE any video where a flipper is using oven cleaner. These people aren't responsible enough to realize they are encouraging others to harm the environment and, depending on where they live, they are rinsing this into the ground water which families with well water will be drinking.

    Thank you for making this video. Every time I see a video posted about using oven cleaners I always comment that the basic ingredients is lye and while “back in the day” lye was used to take finishes off…we have since advanced in using chemicals to strip finishes…that are much safer. But these people using this produce is also what I consider backyard “refinishers”, and know very little about refinishing wood furniture. And I’m not really certain why they want to remove the finish, they just paint the piece…

    Thank you for the information, however, it would have been more helpful to do a comparison between this and the standards strippers. It might be that it’s just as dangerous as the others L’s I mean, if it’s strong enough to strip paint, I’m sure it can’t be all that safe in a general sense. Also, when you spray EasyOff on your oven, you have the door open? And where do those fumes and toxins go? Can we be sure they don’t seep into the food? And finally, most people spray it on their racks and take the racks to the sink and clean them. That water goes down the drain. This is great info, but a comparison would truly tell if it’s MORE dangerous or just as dangerous.

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. It is not made for, tested, or approved for use on furniture or wood so it’s not possible to do a comparison at that level- the data doesn’t exist because it isn’t made for that purpose. If you want a safer stripper try QCS from the brand StripWell.

    Good lord; think I'm gonna skip this trend! 10 cans of cleaner on a poor little piece of furniture?? That doesn't even seem cost-effective even assuming it wasn't absolutely horrible for the environment and humans. And animals... And the furniture!

    Oven cleaner is nasty stuff. Yes it strips furniture, it’s caustic! It is not made fir the purpose of stripping furniture. Anytime you use dangerous chemicals in a way that they were not intended, you are opening up a Pandora’s box, and it’s a terrible idea. Let’s be real however, most furniture strippers, if they actually work, are not nice things either. I try to avoid them, if at all possible. But sometimes it is necessary. But that being said, I use them according to their directions, I wear the appropriate PPE, and dispose of the mess properly. I advise everyone to do the same. Thank you for speaking on this, it’s important from an ethical standpoint. We love what we do, but we need to stay safe, and we have an obligation to protect our wildlife and our planet as well.

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Joyce. You're right -- a lot of the stuff that we use IS toxic which is why it is SO important to use as directed, and follow safety precautions and wear proper PPE!! Thank you for modeling that.

    I think the majority of carcinogens and hazardous chemicals aren't "one shot" deals. As I believe studies project potential harm in amounts over a period of time. Like highly heated carcinogens in bacon would generally take a certain amount of silces everyday for 20 to 40 years.
    So, our immune systems are battling carcinogens all day long everyday. You ride the bus everyday for decades and the benzene in the gas or diesel fumes are being fought off with a strong immune system. I think everything in moderation is a good practice.
