  • Difficulty has remained a hot topic within gaming for the past decade, mostly due to the rising growth of FromSoftware's Souls Series. This series has helped redefine what a difficult game could be, and has opened doors for other developers to take an unconventional route to the difficulty they provide in their games. But this has all lead to a lot of misunderstanding amidst the gaming industry, and I'm here to discuss why difficulty is misunderstood in today's age.

i only have a problem with difficulty when its lazy. (your enemies just get a multiplicator on dam/hp and thats it)

Difficulty is a moving machine it's how a game actually tests the player's ability to use their skills, awareness, adaptivity, and tactics to overcome adversity with what they are given against a competent enemy who is fully capable of fighting back against you.
    Halo
    Destiny
    Soulsborne
    Armored Core
    Doom
    Metal Slug
    Ninja Gaiden
    MegaMan
    Metroidvanias
Are some games I consider actually capable of being difficult without being artificially so
Because they enemy can and will repeatably pin you down and force you to be alert they test you and challenge you to adopt a strategy rather than falling and hiding behind stats to allow you to face roll any and all threats

When Dark Souls first released, I gave it so much shit and would continue to through the years. Then Dark Souls III released, barely a week into its launch and I bought it on a whim with money I had spare thinking its not a complete loss if I don't like it. It took me hours to beat Ludex Gundyr; but in that time I loved how the game felt. A little bit later a close friend messaged me seeing I had DSIII and offered me to join him and his friends and they helped me beat the game, learn the game and learn PvP. I mean, we'd spend all night playing it. I fully swapped my sleeping pattern for it being the only one from the UK the rest the US. When Dark Souls Remastered released, they got me through that and now it's safe to say I love Dark Souls Remastered and I wish I would play the original legally without having to go out and get a Xbox.
Dark Souls Trilogy, Elden Ring and Bloodbourne have all become my favourite games.

Completely relate. I uninstalled the first Dark Souls like 3 times before I could bring myself to commit to it... And now those games changes my life.

I literally had the same sentiment until elden ring released, I played a bit of ds3 but I was so sold on that fact that I hated dark gothic themed games so much that I refused to actually like it,
Im not sure if its because I'm older now but I'm now taking sum time through playing ds2 and going to start ds3 whenever I can

@@Naruhiu I never saw the Dark Souls Trilogy as gothic themed, personally. Oh, it definitely took inspiration from it when it came to many level designs due to how impressive the appearance of gothic architecture is, but the trilogy has always been dark fantasy with strong elements of low fantasy.
