Well the reason the mower only shot the grass 1 pass away was because it was designed like that. Thats the point of the discharge deflector, beacuse if you hit a rock the rock would hit that then be deflectected to the ground. Unfortunately it also deflects the grass. It makes for a messy cut, but safer situation. So by removing that if yout hit a rock it wouldnt be deflected back into the ground so... Just be aware of your sorroundings, and know buy doing that you potetionally adding more risk.. Also, brcause you removed or altered a saftey feature insurance may or may not cover accidents caused as reault of that. With that said... I removed it from my walk behind also. Im sure Randy knows this. But I want people in the comment section also to be aware.
The likelihood of hitting a rock with this thing is rare. I've used mine on rocks to vacuum leaves at 4". But rocks can be dangerous for sure. I use a power rake bar on a 20" and have hit rocks so hard it shot right through the plastic cover on the side discharge. Took out 1 window in the 9 years i done lawn care. But like he mentioned be aware of your surroundings. Always release blades when people appear, never have two people on lawn. But this is a great tip for the thicker lawns I do. And the precaution of this comment is also a great tip. I just picked up a 3rd timemaster as salvage for 300 the motor was shot. And I was able to put the 6h 173cc power fist motor on for 260 had to redo pulleys for the 7/8 shaft. But so far so good. I will probably buy a few more powerfist motors when they go on sale for 100 for my other 2 I have about 5 years on.
Back in 2012 I was one of the early buyers of the Timemaster (with only 190cc engine). I thought everybody did this already...guess not. I drilled a small hole (3/16")in the bottom center of the black plastic chute cover by the lower edge. That way I can just put the bungy cord hook right through that and more securely hold the chute cover up. Doesn't affect the functionality of the cover whatsoever and don't have to wrap the cord around it. I also removed the 2 blue upper handle parts from the mower that I felt just got in the way (I don't have any major hills on my yard). Being 5'10", I also felt that the 2 positions for the handle height were either too low for me or too high, so I created a middle position that works better for me and the handle still works the same as before for storage handle positions. Did all the other stuff too like tweaked the rpms up by 2-300 rpm for better blade tip speed, installed the commercial grade idlers & brackets, kevlar belts, high lift blades, mulch baffle kit, etc. You want more power out of your Timemaster for mulching you can install a (direct-fit bolt-on) Kohler commercial engine on it but that's serious money.
So helpful, had it stall at least 10 times yesterday, and finally gave up regretting my purchase last year, grass I was mowing was thin and weedy but tall and a little wet. Can wait to try. Thanks!
That's a very good idea I actually do the same thing with my 21 inch push mower especially when the grass is damp it's a lot less chance of the clumping up
I used that method all the time. I made the discharge hole bigger with a grinder and it worked much better and it would cut anything. Get that grinder out folks but always use safety glasses afterwards when mowing
I have got a 28inch Cub Cadet CC600 that also needs the chute open. Does not mulch at all even with proper mulch blades and an ideal situation. I think it's a common problem with the design of the deck in both the Timemaster or any wide area MTD. But with high lift blades and the chute open they are a beast.
I’m glad you made this video. Everyone does complain about this mower. But if people would just open this side discharge they wouldn’t need to complain at all. Mower can knock down decent tall wet grass when shoot is up. Thanks
Beast mode is fine and dandy, and awesome! But what if you have landscaping rock or much to work around? This thing blows everywhere! And nobody goes to the work to landscape just to blast it with grass... Any thoughts?
Why not just take a tach and bump the rpms on the motor up to where they should be around 3600 instead of where they are from Home Depot around 2800-3200
I’m not confident enough in my small engine skills for that. That would require screwing with the governor if memory serves and I’m not really interested in doing that

Well said
I actually did not know the thing about the deflector sending the rock to the ground. Very interesting

I appreciate that ir sends rocks to the ground because one of my Timemasters ate its own rear flap when reversing.

I've been doing this all summer with my timemaster. It does help. But yes you would think for the size mower it is, that it would have more power.
At some point I'm gonna replace the engine with a Turfmaster engine. I think that will make it the perfect machine
That's a very good idea I actually do the same thing with my 21 inch push mower especially when the grass is damp it's a lot less chance of the clumping up
yeah I side chute as much as possible
I used that method all the time. I made the discharge hole bigger with a grinder and it worked much better and it would cut anything. Get that grinder out folks but always use safety glasses afterwards when mowing

I often wonder if those 28in machines might be better than the timemaster, one of the guys local to me uses the 28in craftsman mower and he loves it
One other weakness about the chute, if you bump something with it, the two little prongs break off so easy and then the chute will not attach anyway.

thanks for watching man! Yeah I really like it
Good advice. I wedge a old sanding sponge under the deflector and the grass flys wet or dry.
sanding sponge? like whats in the drywall section in home depot?
@@TheRandyDulin Yes, and I use a fresh one in the kitchen to wash potatoes for baking. A cheap 2.5"x 4" from a dollar type store. Works for me.
Awesome trick! Thanks!! 😁
thanks man!
I do the same for my Timemaster. Just be careful when running over debris that could shoot out and break a window close by
Beast mode is fine and dandy, and awesome! But what if you have landscaping rock or much to work around? This thing blows everywhere! And nobody goes to the work to landscape just to blast it with grass... Any thoughts?
I make sure the chute isn’t pointed that direction
Good info, thanks.
Nice 👍🏼 tip. Appreciate the video.
I love my time master!
same here!
I noticed the bolt by the pull handle is stripped at the bottom any ideas?
Can you give some more detail? I’m not sure I understand your question
Dulin Cut & Trim I was changing out my pull start coil and notice the bolt the secures the oil dip stick is stripped out

My timemaster shuts off all the time when I’m mulching. I just bought Gator Blades. It’s worse now!!!
Or you can do a kohler 224 engine swap lol
Hey Randy Thanks 🤩
thanks for watching man!
U dont cut in wet grass unless u r a real smart person
Mowing wet grass is something that happens pretty frequently when running a lawn business
So what do all of those with lawns in the PNW do?
