That subscription call out to “the cheap seats” was hilarious! Love it guys! Keep up the humor and the lighter side of gaming!
I was choking laughing! (already was a sub) but loved it! If you didn't sub after that, what're you doing with your life? lol
Thank you so much for talking about Apiary! I've been a Patreon backer for a while, and absolutely love your content - it's always upbeat and positive and anti-gatekeeping, and your love of games comes through each and every video. Thank you!
Hey Connie! Thanks for making such an awesome game and for the kind words! We can’t wait to pick up our own copy of Apiary!
I’ve not done my end of year lists yet but I would be amazed if Apiary doesn’t make my top 3 for the year. It’s just incredible.
Got a demo from Connie at PAX (so cool to meet you!) and it’s very high on my wishlist now!
Thanks for making such an awesome game, Connie! The theme of bees for a worker lifecycle management game is superb, and the fact that the player to player interaction exists and is positive rather than negative has gotten my girlfriend to the table more than any other game I've played in ages! I have so many games in my collection with less than 3 plays, and this has already gotten 5 plays in the 2 weeks I've owned it! Huge fan, can't wait to see what you do next
Great list! Picked up a copy of That's Not a Hat when I was in Germany on your recommendation and it has been a hit with everyone I've played it with!
I live for these lists! Thanks so much for all of your awesome content this year fellas!
Awww yay we hope you enjoyed! Here’s to 2024!
Thank you for doing these. I mostly only look for your top X videos once a year when shopping for Christmas. It's such a great resource.
Getting Forest Shuffle from Game Nertz today! And ordered White Castle. Also got Grand Austria Hotel for my husband for XMas. I really love all your choices. My husband's favorite of all time is Feast for Odin. We got into board games a year ago when my husband went through cancer treatment. Board games got him through the worst time in both of our lives. We are so appreciative of what the hobby has done for us. And we appreciate all the hard work and effort you put into these videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And Merry Christmas!
We're so happy board games got you through those tough times! Hopefully we can play a game someday!
👍💕
Awesome list! I'm really going to have to check out Canal when it comes stateside. The White Castle is a solid #1 choice. I love it solo. And my game group loved our play of it. One of them bought it the next day and another requested it for his game choice for our next game day.
Great list! All these games look fun. Definitely will need to look at acquiring a few of these.
Yall got me PUMPED for canal. I love Uwe games and I love solo soooooo yah I’m psyched. Fantastic video guys! Looking forward to watching the Patreon one also.
I'm very excited to try it. Also I need to get into devir games.
I haven't really played any of their games. Well... it looks like they were part of Codenames which I have played that. I mostly solo, so White Castle is off the table as I've not heard great things for it solo. @@txsportsfreak02
Thanks, bros! Starting to get my Christmas gift list together and looking for ideas. Nice!
Could not agree more on 2023 being a fanatic year for new titles and with your number 1 selection. A year that included: The White Castle, Federation, Nucleum, Darwin’s Journey and Voidfall plus a ton of other titles that I look forward to getting to the table. Strong strong year.
It really was. And there’s so many more we still want to try from this year
Thank you for your wonderful words about The White Castle!! We're so glad you enjoyed it so much 🏯🤍
Wow, White Castle at number 1 is really cool. Devir games has been on an absolute tear the last few years, Bitoku, Lacrimosa, iurusalem, Bamboo, and now White Castle. I'm glad you guys can see and enjoy the tight design that deserves praise.
They’re absolutely crushing it
Well said... Dont forget Red Cathedral
@@neel3696 Oh yes, that one is great too
Lol wow I just found y'all and I have got to say that was the most effective way someone has gotten me to subscribe!
Dude, you guys are hilarious for that bit about people up in the rafters 😂. Seriously people, get your butts subscribed!
Also, great top 10. I want some of these real bad, like Apiary and Oranieburger Kanal (even though I had no clue about this one). A.R.T Project wasn’t something I thought I would want, but you guys explained it well and convinced me!
I love Garphill, can’t wait to table Scholars, as Wayfarers cracked my top 10 after just a few solo plays! I also really need to table Darwin’s Journey and The White Castle.
Thanks guys, really would love to play some games with two some time.
Thanks dudes! Appreciate all the content this year.
Cheers! Our pleasure
I love the energy here haha! This is a great list - haven't tried Apiary yet but im curious!
Thank you so much for doing this early enough to get some of these before they sell out everywhere. 😊
we got ya!
great list! the art project has caught my eye since I first heard about it!
DRIPPING WITH THEME! hahaha zayummm these games look phenomenal!! about to add these to my christmas shopping lists hahah thanks for the epic top 10 brothers! 🔥
"...so you have these bees, right?"
That was hilarious.
Amazing list!!! Easily the closest to my list of all my fave channels!!!
Wahoo! And happy new year Tim!
The subscriber angle really made me laugh. Thanks.
great list! Thanks
I apologize profusely. I have no idea what I was doing in the rafters; I don't even like heights. I am now subscribed. (real talk, best subscription pitch I've seen)
Hehehe we’re glad you dug it and that it worked! We’re sorry we called you a pervert
THE WHITE CASTLE YEAHHHH 😁🤘🤘 I was a bit scared not seeing it moving on towards the end of the video lol, but it's first yeahhhhh :D I soooo agree with you, I love this game 🤩
Some really good games on this list and several I need to try! My top game of the year (and it's not even close) is Earthborne Rangers. Probably the most unique setting for a game ever and it truly stands out amongst other games of its kind with the open-world exploration feel
We’ve seen you talk so much about that one and it has us really interested to try it!
And you are definitely our #1 Brothers! 😊
Thanks for making such great games
Love this list, Sky Team and The White Castle are also my favorite games of this year! Sky Team is extremely engaging and the more the game progresses the less you want the plane to crash so it's really pulling you in. My 8 year old loves it, my mom (80yo) loves it too, I played it with many friends and family members and they all feel super proud when we land successfully. Such a unique experience!
The White Castle is more expert but holly shit the gameplay is so good, the first few plays you will learn how the game works and waste a bunch of turns doing 1 or 2 actions while you could have been doing 5 with more experience. There is definitely a learning curve but when you understand how it works it's very addictive as you try to squeeze in as many actions as you can. On top of it, these games are cheap compared to the competition.
Nice guys i love your content !
Wahoo thank you!
Soooo cool my friend 🔥🔥🔥
I'm all in on Apiary. I quite enjoy the bumping action. It adds a great dimension to my decision making. And yes, it does get better with more plays. Cutthroat even. I've yet to get my copy of Darwin's Journey to the table, but after watching your video it's next up!
apiary drop, Darwin top
great list! fun but still accessible mid weight games ok to teach newbies 😊
First time viewer - and the cheap seats call out had me laughing and subscribing
Heck yeah! Thanks for the sub!
I REALLY thought you were calling me out for watching this on the toilet holding my phone down in my lap, it felt... Wierd...
But then you called me out for not subscribing, which felt equally bad.
So I guess you have a new subscriber 😅
We all know exactly where people are watching our videos from, and we don’t judge one bit
I got the White Castle for my bday! I’m so excited to give it a try!!!
Happy birthday! Hope you enjoy
Totally agree with you guys on Oranienburger Kanal - it's so good! Except I might be the only person who thinks the artwork is lovely. When I first saw the cover I thought "Finally! An Uwe game with good artwork!" 😆
I agree the artwork, though minimal is not so bad. For us the color palette could it be a little better but we are glad you dig it!
There are so many more 2023 games I haven't tried yet, but based on what I've played here are my top 2023 games:
1. Sky Team
2. Earth
3. Infiltrators**
4. The White Castle*
5. Point City
6. Moon*
7. Dreadful Meadows
8. Numbsters
9. Super Slopes
10. Ancient Realm
*Only played once
**2021 game according to BGG but not available in the US until 2023 (as far as I know anyway)
lol no joke, the bit where they called out people for not subbing was funny.... it got me to subscribe.
hehehe glad you enjoyed! had to have fun with it
I LOVE how "gross" Oranienburger Kanal looks 😍
hehe me too. Don't tell Nick
I see you out there bumpin bees!
Your top 5 are going to be in my top ten this year for sure.
Let's gooooo
Oh wooow White Castle in front of all those big names! Devir is wonderful, they honestly deserve all the love. No unnecessarily big boxes, no insane prices. I almost bought it during black friday, then hesitated, and it got sold out... Now I really want it, but I'll have to wait for a restock. Have you guys tried it solo?
I think my list would be:
1. Septima, hands down. Perfect game for me.
2. Legacy of Yu. I only tried it because my brother bought it, and I thought, why not. And it was suuuch a huge surprise for me. Very enjoyable resource management.
3. Bamboo, another one from Devir. Surprisingly fun puzzle, incredible production, great price!
4. Art Society. I'm not huuge on tile laying games, but I loved the mechanics of wanting to match frames, but not the same types of artwork. Also just a beautiful, clean design.
5. Forest Shuffle. I love that card games can still surprise us!
6. Coffee Rush. This game is so unique in a way, the components are what truly make this game so much fun to play.
Earth and The Fox Experiment could be honorable mentions, I enjoyed them, but I'm not fully satisfied with them! I also played quite a lot of smaller games, but none that really stood out to me, unfortunately. I reeeally hope to get White Castle soon, I think it has potential to be second, maybe third on my list!
Great list thanks for sharing your thoughts! And yep Mike has played it solo and lost horribly to the Bot haha solo works great!
"The landing gear is down"...Wayne's World! I will accept my prize at any time, I just hope it's not a gun rack.
I don’t even own A gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate an entire rack.
the top view camera was really funny 😂
Great list! Still a bit early for me, as I haven't played all of the games on my 2023 radar, as noted below, but if I had to pick now I'd go with:
1. Barcelona
2. Nucleum
3. Marrakesh: Essential Edition (kinda cheating because Marrakesh is 2022, but Essential Edition came out 2023)
4. 3 Ring Circus
5. Everdell Farshore
6. Sunrise Lane
7. Earth
8. Junk Drawer
9. Point City
10. Shake That City
Honorable Mentions:
Steam Up
Spellbook
Sitting on my shelf of opportunity but will likely make my top 10 of the year if not honorable mentions:
The White Castle
Kutna Hora
Septima
Diced Veggies
Great list!
You guys seem to love combo games ;) we played white castle this week for the first time and we love it. Can be satisfying if you find the perfect combo.
One question about darwins journey. Already in my shelf but still waiting to play. I read a lot of good things about fireland exp. Do you replace the original map with the exp?
Combos all day!
And yes indeed the board is double sided and one side is for the expansion :)
Forest shuffle is a lot of fun in a small package . Reminds me very much of fantasy realms.
Every time you mention La Granja I'm going to demand you try Cooper Island also by Ode. If you ever hit up twin cities area Minnesota I will find you and teach you. Love your content!
We've been wanting to try this one for years
In no particular order;
- Unmatched Adventures
- Age of Innovation
- World Wonders
- White Castle
- Kutna Hora
- Star Wars Deckbuilding Game
- Apiary
- Weather machine
- The Witcher Old World
- Voidfall
I thought you guys were going to have Evacuation on your list for sure. Did it just miss out (eg #11 or 12)?
Pssst don’t tell anyone because it’s on our Patron only list but yeah it barely missed out. Amazing game still!
I know a lot of people have cooled on Earth, but it’s still my #1 of the year. Love that game. Sky Team is a close #2 though!
It’s definitely a great game no doubt about it
Hi guys, really like your channel. Fyi, it’s not Scorpion Masque, but Scorpion Masqué (mask-eh).
That’s fair
I have not played a ton of new games this year, and it feels like the first year in a while where I can't make an honest top ten of the year! Which is good for me, I have been on a buying frenzy these past years and needed to stop. Ha! But this year some standouts were Dogfight! Rule the Skies in 20 Minutes, Thunder Road Vendetta, and Earthborne Rangers. Whale to Look was also good.
“It’s ‘new-clear.’ The S is silent.” - Peter Griffin
Great review as usual guys! FYI, Scorpion Masqué is pronounced "Scorpion Masqu[ay]" in French.
Yes indeed it has been mentioned to us several times haha
art project (heist) looks fun 🎉
I’m surprised Legacy of Yu didn’t make the list. Very fun, challenging solo experience that I thought you guys would like a lot.
Don’t get us wrong We love it a lot. It’s just a really crowded year.
forest shuffle looks great! heard it's a table hog? 😅
it can definitely take up space if you make enough trees haha
I've played four of these. My #1 for the year is Barcelona.
Great game!
Bros, I must admit I haven’t played a single Garphill game! Please teach me one at DTW 🎲
PS. The white castle is punched and sitting on my shelf, ready to be learned!
We’ve got you covered!
The White Castle is so good and worthy of being #1. For me I wish there was a way to play Darwin's Journey of the vanilla side with the adventure cards. I'm on the fence with Scholars of the ST which I have only played twice. Played That's Not a Hat on the last day of a weekend con and was too brain dead.
Agree with the number one. Completely amazing game!
3:20 "...like a pervert" 🤣
I meant that as a compliment I promise
The kings of top 10 lists did it again.
Hahaha we expect our royal crowns any day now
It really has been a good year for board games. Earth didn't even make top 10, that is some tough competition. I still need to try a few of these.
the year was bananas. So many good games
"Your landing gear is down..." is from WAYNE'S WORLD 🤘🎸
I really liked Expeditions and Distilled. I still haven’t played a ton from this year. I own Darwin’s Journey though and I’m hyped for that one.
We really gotta get expeditions played
@@TheBrothersMurphI honestly think its incredible. Kinda feel like it’s not getting enough love. Probably because of Scythe being so big and the theme in the same world, but the game is so different.
Yeah, those differences are what honestly have me really excited to try the game! I have a feeling I’m really gonna like it
Where would you guys place Hegemony? That game is soooo good
Haven’t played that one yet unfortunately
@@TheBrothersMurph thats a shame. My Top 1 from 2023 for sure. Gotta table that one! Nice vid
Can't wait to start roving!
I need Walmart to build Himeiji castle in Arkansas now.
So I played forest shuffle and realized there is a dominant deer and wolf strategy.
Oooh we haven’t done a lot of deer wolf stuff. Gotta try that out
Surprised not to see Earth or Evacuation in that list
It was such a crowded year. Crazy
I have played a little over 20 games released in 2023, out of those this would be my current top 10 of the year. The top half is not likely to shift, I feel very secure in them being my highest picks of the year.
1) Age of Innovation
2) Nucleum
3) Earth
4) Coffee Rush
5) Apiary
6) Pirates of Maracaibo
7) Books of Time
8) Bonsai
9) Djinn
10) Kutná Hora
excellent list!! we want to try Age of Innovation so bad!
@@TheBrothersMurph I just got my copy last week and I have already played it 3 times this week and my friend asked me to play it again on Sunday. It also works excellently with 2 players (2 out of the 3 games were 2-player games). I really hope you guys get to try it out soon :)
I'd like to play Apiary and Scholars, but I will probably only be able to do that if they come to BGA. When I put together a ranking of the new to me games I have played this year, I expect that After Us will be my number #1 from the year. Out of the 50ish NTM games I have recorded plays of this year, 10 are from this year and 9 of those I played on BGA. Maybe if I remember, I'll come back and post that top 10 when I figure the rest of it out.
We’d love to see the list if/when you get to it! Looking forward to it
I usually put together my rankings for the years New to Me games in the first couple of days of January. I'll try to remember to post them here.
so it's like Cats Eye the board game?! 🤣 ~ 🖼️
Nice list. Haven’t tried White Castle. Was very interested in it. But after some local reviews. It seems to be just too short.
I was baffled that Great Western Trail New Zealand wasn’t in the list. BGG does put it on release at 2023. Maybe it was released in 2022. And that’s why it’s not on this list.
But man that is a great game.
They mentioned GWT:NZ @ 1:18. They left it off the main list under the caveat that it's too similar to GWT and is basically a remake, otherwise it would be on the list.
The other commenter already covered it but yes we state in the video that made it an honorable mention simply because it’s one in a series but that game is like top 5 on the year for sure. Just decided to make it an honorable mention so we could talk about more games :-)
@@TheBrothersMurph seems legit 😁👌🏼
Psst...Has anyone told Nick that Stardew Valley *is* already a board game? :-x
But seriously: Oranienberger Kanal is high up on my wishlist (once it comes to the states), and keeping my eyes peeled for Forest shuffle, because it is soooo addictive on BGA. I think Leaf is close to the top for us for games that have come out this year, just a super accessible and surprisingly combo-y tile placement game; however, we never seem to get to a lot of new releases though until the following calendar year, so take that with a grain of salt. XD
I thought for sure you would have Thunder Road in your top 10.
It was such a packed year. Too many good games :) good problem to have
Your list is a lot like mine. I think we might be friends for life.
Let's goooooooo!
A.R.T. Project was really a surprise hit for me at PaxU.
Isn't it good??
When we got to number 2 and Evacuation was not yet mentioned, I thought it had to be number 1. To my surprise it wasn't even on the list 😮
barely missed the list. It's a great game
Def recommend BGA for Forest Shuffle
It's great there!
Aw, you forgot "Age of Comics: The Golden Years". Definitely my favorite and in my top ten of all time already!
Nice! Haven't played that one yet
@@TheBrothersMurph - Check it out when you can! First time designers/publishers @liriusgames - and it's worker placement as competing comic book publishers in NYC in the late 1930's through early 1950's. Fantastic art and table presence.
you had *someone* pick Kanal up for you at Essen and bring it back? That's all the thanks I get???
😝
Uh oh she found us. SCATTER! Also, Paula is the best of us ❤️
At least Oranienburger Kanal has some water, counteracting the dryness
Good point!
Personally, my top 5 2023 games were
1. Dune imperium - uprising: I loved the original, I love this one but they are different in a very good way. Man, this game is good
2. GWT - NZ: you know too well that it's good XD I actually was not considering buying this before I watched your video :D
Well the first two are the remakes so...moving on~
3. Darwin's journey: actually I like think I like this better than GWT NZ. So good. So goooood love Simone games
4. Barcelona: amazing mechanics great art work, nice historic facts. Definitely the best game with the most originality
5. Sky team: omg, this game. I've never seen a coop game so thematic but very intense while maintaining strategic and tactical value even though it uses dice!
Nucleum was obviously really good but I just didn't think there was much originality in it. I really liked it and played it multiple times but I still like Barrage or Brass much better.
Fantastic list!
I want unsubscribe and then resubscribe 😂 great call out! Can't wait to try out Apiary
Murphs Make Me Buy Stuff... is a top game of 2023... and every year.
Always
@TheBrothersMurph 🥷 I got Paint the Roses due to the Murphs. This resulted in my creating a solo puzzle variant like Calico for the game due to my buying it. So, end result, the Murphs cause new games to come into being.
A movie based on Art Project? _The Monuments Men_
Oooh good point!
Came here to say this, beaten by an hour.
Wow, where is voidfall, age of innovations and oathsworn ?
We haven’t played voidfall or age of innovation and oathsworn just didn’t make the list
where is evacuatioooooon?
I knowwwwww. It was JUST outside the list
The I LIKE EVERYTHING brothers.
It’d be a weird “top games of the year” list if we hated everything
Have you guys not played Voidfall?
Naw haven’t had a chance to yet
Ok, that's the only possible explanation how it is not number 1 on your list :))
Ha! I’d set your expectations appropriately I’m not sure that game is gonna be our perfect cup of tea. But we do want to try it still
@@TheBrothersMurph Well it's a euro game with countless possibilities and combos, I think you're gonna like it :)
Well alright now I’m listening!
what about Hegemony?
As we say, at the end of the video the game on the list, it means we haven’t played it or we’re just not huge fans of it. In this case, it is the former.
I fully agree with White Castle but 2023 is far from being an outstanding year for new games
Perhaps for you. We had a great time with 2023
@@TheBrothersMurph then we should see some games in your top 10. Outstanding year after all.
And the first place goes to... SPAIN ✌
Earth didnt make Top Ten?!? Shame.
Haha yeah
Wombo combo not combo wombo
Ain’t no way
