We just bought our two rabbits from a man who does free range. We have been putting The doe in with the buck for four weekend now and still nothing is happening between them. The first time he checked her out but since nothing. Is it a problem because they were free range? Please, what can we do about this problem? Thank you.

Hello! We have 8 month old American Chinchilla’s. They share a cage but have a divider in between them. We give them play time together in an open area and they start fighting after about 5 minutes. Should we put them in a smaller space? Should we get a new female? Any ideas?

If you are having trouble breeding your doe, try this, it 100% worked for me. I tried for weeks to get my doe to breed, the buck did his part, but she wouldn't lift and would run from the buck. Using a soft hair band (not elastic band) place it around the doe's head and slide it to her back legs. Then do a few loops around the base of the tail. This causes the doe's tail to rise making it easy for the buck to mate. Worked wonders for me and the doe does not get hurt, but I stress do not use an elastic band. He had 5 successful breedings :) good luck!
No worries. The doe actually lifts when they are breeding for the fall off (quite dramatically lol), but this just helps the process for a first time doe or a stubborn doe. Works wonders.
@jenni andais Hi Jenni, the soft hair band loops around the base of the tail and over the hind legs, not near the head. It has worked for me, and my doe has had 3 healthy kit litters thus far 😃
the thing is my doe isn't just refusing to lift her tail, shes running away from him, making grunting noises, swishing her tail, trying to bite him and anyone who tries to touch her. I thought she might've been ill at first but the vet checked her and she's perfectly healthy. The only reason i can come up with is her age but she's ard 3 yrs old so she should still be fertile.
Good question. if you have another cage it is probably best to place the buck in that one and take her to that one. or place the buck in a pet carrier and remove her from his cage, replace him and then put her back in. I wouldn't take her to her own cage with him in it. That might be a problem.
Hi, very interesting video and i liked it. here is my problem, 1 and a half year ago i bought 1 male and 4 females, all 5 about months age.. they were breed in cages and i put them on the ground for free breeding. Immediatly i got all females pregnant and successfully rasised all the new rabbits. And then i never got my buck and the 4 females reproduce again :( i have no idea why. i dont use industrial aliments, just alfalfa and few vegs.
Wow, that is a strange problem for sure. I would expect them to breed all the time in that set up. I am afraid I can't say exactly what the issue was. It is possible that your male went sterile for some reason. High temperatures can do that but it is usually just temporary. The other thought is if the buck was overweight. Overweight bucks don't tend to perform. I really don't know right off hand what else could have caused the issue.

I've seen vids with people actually forcing Thier rabbit to breed they Just set the doe a sorta way and the buck puts in his work....my friend and i was watching the videos at the time he told me he was gonna try it I didn't believe him cause I didn't like the idea....one day when I was out a town he called me and told me he just tried it🤕😕....the day before due date finally arrived I noticed she hasn't been up to any labor work I was concerned the next morning I went to check on her she had all 8 kits but she didn't pull fur we provided bedding for her she just never wanted those babies..... I'm basically asking you think maybe not allowing your rabbit to breed naturally is the cause of this problem??
I am sorry to hear about your problems. I think it probably has more to due with the rabbit just not having good mothering instincts. It is probably why she didn't want to breed naturally to begin with. You might try again though, she may be more willing now.
That is a pretty common issue. Does can often be reluctant to breed. If you just keep trying they will usually respond in a few days of continuous efforts (every morning and evening).

If you bang the Male to the Female she can be really territorial and may attack the male instead of breeding. Always bring the Female to the Male. Hopefully this was helpful.
Question: I have 3 does that have had 1 litter (1 of the does had babies back at night, the other 2 does had babies back in June.) and we put the does in with the buck and the does don’t want to breed not one of them. They are all 1 year old! Please Help!
One thing I was hoping you would mention (which you didn’t) was how to breed when newly-matured, never-bred buck has been scared away by overzealous doe. That’s why I came here... trying to figure out how to get him interested in breeding after she has humped every part of him and scared the beejesus out of him.

That is strange indeed. Are you absolutely sure it is a female? I know it is a silly question but it has happened many times that rabbits have been mistaken as one sex and not the other. I am afraid I don't have any answers if it is indeed a female. Could be too young to breed maybe? or maybe some kind of health problem. I just don't know.

I am sorry to hear that. If he is older he may just be done with breeding. One common problem that keeps bucks from breeding is if they are overweight. You might try to put him on a little bit of a diet and see if that helps.

Rabbits can breed for 4 or 5 years. Sometimes more. as long as you can find rabbits that are under 3 years old, you should be able to get some good litters from them and make it worth it.

They fought while I was Cleaning thier cages. Im considering selling the reluctant does or is there a way I can fix this problem??
I have a first time buck and doe trying to breed. She is 8 mo old and he is 9 mo old. She's not lifting for the buck but I did notice the buck was going Thru the motions but never had a fall off a few times. Is it possible for her to be pregnant if he never had a fall off? Do all bucks have fall offs?
What you are describing is pretty common. It isn't likely that she is pregnant without seeing a fall off. Sounds like she is just reluctant to breed. I would keep trying and see if she will eventually lift for the buck. Some times first time breeders can be a little reluctant.
My girls wont lift. Two are 10 months old and the buck's mother is almost 3. I've tried several things but you gave me a few more ideas. The does have been living communally outdoors in a pen while the buck is my pet and lives indoors. He is all about breeding, but they honk and cry when I put them in his cage. I left them in for more than an hour and they just got tired and chilled out next to each other. Should I separate the does for awhile into separate cages? I will try the car today when the temp is right and let ya know. I have Silver Fox rabbits.

I think the word you were looking for about the doe was "Estes"..it's kind of where we get the word for Easter. That's what the doe comes into after having the act of mating. And I'm guessing it might be a case of stranger danger for some does. I'm so lucky my doe and buck can see each other every day and make goo goo eyes all day. Then I let him hop around in the enclosure under her pen just to keep them interested but not close enough to mate. It's the way I set up my cages tho. Great video as always!
The reintroduction is a huge thing imo.. Both my male and my fm used to be housed with other rabbits fir abiut 6months and when seperated they got kinda gloomy.. Well i introduced then because i wanted a litter.. They gkt along after he stopped trying to ride in the first 5min and would lay n "cuddle" so i decided to leave then in 1 cage till i seen a breeding. Shes usualy run away as soon as he tried to get her or shed hide in a box.. Even 3days lrior to litter she was still running away.. So i had given uo and was going tinget a new female.. My doe has been without babies for a couple weeks and I want to re-breed her. The she's 2 years and the buck is 6 months, he's had 2 litters already so he should know what to do. But neighter of them are interested in eachother. What could be the cause? Even if I hold my doe he just sniffs and that's it. Her private area is purple-ish so she should be willing. I am not familiar with them. A quick google search says that they are a meat rabbit breed developed in France from New Zealands, Californias, and a few other breeds.
Rabbits need to eat their own poop so they can extract enough nutrition from their food. It's like a cow bringing the food back up and having multiple stomachs to digest the food naturally and get all the nutrition they need to get.

I have a 6 month old buck who was brother with a doe but when she died (unexpectedly) we got another 6 month doe, they bonded immediately and live together. we are trying to breed them in a pen but every time he tries humping her she runs away (it is quite a big space) what do I do?
If not already, I would keep them separate. If you have been keeping them together, there is a good chance she is already bred. If that is the case I would give her 30 days to make sure she isn't before trying again. If you are sure she isn't bred, then just keep trying. You might try to put her in a pet carrier and take her on a trip around town and see if she is more receptive when you return. For some reason that seems to work for lots of people.
Hi Chris, we've been trying to have our Standard Rex doe mate, non of the bucks are overweight, sick or old, but for some reason she ends up humping the bucks and dominates them, no matter what buck we try she ends up humping them and the bucks don't seem interested in her at all. Have you ever seen that?
That is strange. It isn't uncommon for a doe to act dominant but for the bucks to not be interested at all, that is weird. I know it is a crazy question, but are you sure she is a doe? It isn't hard to make that mistake with rabbits.

That is a pretty common problem. If you watch the video the advice I give for does is pretty much it. Whether they are running in circles constantly or just won't lift.
I have three mini Rex rabbits and the two females are 5 1/2 months old and the male is seven months old. No not generally. The males are pretty much ready to go all the time. They may become sterile for a while in high temp but they are still trying to breed either way.

Sounds like the female is trying to be the dominant one. If your buck is not wanting to mate it could be that he is overweight. That is the first thing to check on. If that is not the case, he may just be a little shy. Generally the act of just trying over and over again will fix the problem. If that doesn't work, you might have to hold the doe and allow the male to inspect her without her trying to mount him. It can be tricky to fix these problems sometimes. I wish I had a quick answer but it usually just takes persistence and time.
That is a pretty common problem. The main thing to do is to just keep trying. Sometimes if you add some extra light to their hutches and extend the daylight to at least 14 hours a day it can help.
I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like you may need to look at getting another rabbit. With the breeding issues and not taking care of the babies, she sounds like she has pretty poor mothering instincts.

If he isn't overweight you may just have to give him some time and multiple opportunities before he breeds. or get a new buck.

Is it overweight maybe? That is the most common reason why a buck won't mate. If that is not the case he may just be shy and need some time to get acquainted.
if it is overweight just cut back on the feed a little. If he is just shy and won't attempt to breed after multiple sessions, I would honestly look for another buck. That is the easiest way to fix that issue. It sounds crazy but you might want to check to see if it actually is a buck.

you didn't say so, just to be sure, make sure you are taking the doe to the buck's cage and not the buck to the doe's cage. Does can get very territorial. If you are already doing that and she is still being aggressive you may have to just give her a little time and try again. She may just not be ready to breed right now. If there is a chance that she is already pregnant, that may be the issue or if she is over 5 years old, she may just be too old to breed at that point.

If he isn't used often then as early as 12 to 24 hrs later However if he breeds a couple times a week before you need to give him time off. If you breed him twice in 1 day like morning and night give him several days to a week off for his body to recoup

No, it isn't a permanent thing. When temperatures drop back down the buck will recover.

What is all the process happens perfectly and both are in good health and the Femal looks and act like pregnant then after 35 days and no delivery!!!!

My buck tries to mount the does, they don't lift and he just gets off. The genitals are red-ish and not very pale and they're all adults too!

My male rabbit will not mate with a certain female why is that? He mates great with others just doesn’t take any interest in a certain female

Why is my female rabbit not lifting for the male rabbit??
My girls wont lift. Two are 10 months old and the buck's mother is almost 3. I've tried several things but you gave me a few more ideas. The does have been living communally outdoors in a pen while the buck is my pet and lives indoors. He is all about breeding, but they honk and cry when I put them in his cage. I left them in for more than an hour and they just got tired and chilled out next to each other. Should I separate the does for awhile into separate cages? I will try the car today when the temp is right and let ya know. I have Silver Fox rabbits.

You got me all nervous when you talked about castration but I have noticed both parties in the ritual performing some oral activity upon each other, beyond just sniffing, and it seems to be non-aggressive so I’m just wondering how closely I need to watch that? Do your rabbits display this behavior as well?
I think the word you were looking for about the doe was "Estes"..it's kind of where we get the word for Easter. That's what the doe comes into after having the act of mating. And I'm guessing it might be a case of stranger danger for some does. I'm so lucky my doe and buck can see each other every day and make goo goo eyes all day. Then I let him hop around in the enclosure under her pen just to keep them interested but not close enough to mate. It's the way I set up my cages tho. Great video as always!

The reintroduction is a huge thing imo.. Both my male and my fm used to be housed with other rabbits fir abiut 6months and when seperated they got kinda gloomy.. Well i introduced then because i wanted a litter.. They gkt along after he stopped trying to ride in the first 5min and would lay n "cuddle" so i decided to leave then in 1 cage till i seen a breeding. Shes usualy run away as soon as he tried to get her or shed hide in a box.. Even 3days lrior to litter she was still running away.. So i had given uo and was going tinget a new female.. Low and behold a litter.. (Well 2 because i didnt find it in time) sometimes females dont give ibtinthe male aparently because mine were in the front room and always had someone nearby (3 dif work scheduals)and NOONE seen a falloff 🐼
You know, i didn't mention in the video but if a female is pregnant often she won't be receptive.

I am not sure that there is anything to do about a false pregnancy other than to re breed your rabbit and hope it goes better next time.
My doe has been without babies for a couple weeks and I want to re-breed her. The she's 2 years and the buck is 6 months, he's had 2 litters already so he should know what to do. But neighter of them are interested in eachother. What could be the cause? Even if I hold my doe he just sniffs and that's it. Her private area is purple-ish so she should be willing. Last time I bred her she was incredibly willing. What do I do?

I am not familiar with them. A quick google search says that they are a meat rabbit breed developed in France from New Zealands, Californias, and a few other breeds.
Rabbits need to eat their own poop so they can extract enough nutrition from their food. It's like a cow bringing the food back up and having multiple stomachs to digest the food naturally and get all the nutrition they need to get.
That is a random comment for this video. But you are on the right track. they don't eat their poop actually but they do produce a "special poop" called cecetropes. I did a video on the subject a while back if you are interested.

I have a 6 month old buck who was brother with a doe but when she died (unexpectedly) we got another 6 month doe, they bonded immediately and live together. we are trying to breed them in a pen but every time he tries humping her she runs away (it is quite a big space) what do I do?
If not already, I would keep them separate. If you have been keeping them together, there is a good chance she is already bred. If that is the case I would give her 30 days to make sure she isn't before trying again. If you are sure she isn't bred, then just keep trying. You might try to put her in a pet carrier and take her on a trip around town and see if she is more receptive when you return. For some reason that seems to work for lots of people.
Hi Chris, we've been trying to have our Standard Rex doe mate, non of the bucks are overweight, sick or old, but for some reason she ends up humping the bucks and dominates them, no matter what buck we try she ends up humping them and the bucks don't seem interested in her at all. Have you ever seen that?
That is strange. It isn't uncommon for a doe to act dominant but for the bucks to not be interested at all, that is weird. I know it is a crazy question, but are you sure she is a doe? It isn't hard to make that mistake with rabbits.

The person where i bought her from said she's 9 months i wonder if she's maybe younger and not ready yet and the bucks kinda sense it.

That is a pretty common problem. If you watch the video the advice I give for does is pretty much it. Whether they are running in circles constantly or just won't lift.
I have three mini Rex rabbits and the two females are 5 1/2 months old and the male is seven months old. I decided to breed them finally and they just showed no interest in each other and we’re just grooming themselves and neither one of them were trying to breed. Neither one of them are proven so I know it will be complicated but how do I get them to breed?

No not generally. The males are pretty much ready to go all the time. They may become sterile for a while in high temp but they are still trying to breed either way.

Sounds like the female is trying to be the dominant one. If your buck is not wanting to mate it could be that he is overweight. That is the first thing to check on. If that is not the case, he may just be a little shy. Generally the act of just trying over and over again will fix the problem. If that doesn't work, you might have to hold the doe and allow the male to inspect her without her trying to mount him. It can be tricky to fix these problems sometimes. I wish I had a quick answer but it usually just takes persistence and time.

That is a pretty common problem. The main thing to do is to just keep trying. Sometimes if you add some extra light to their hutches and extend the daylight to at least 14 hours a day it can help.

I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like you may need to look at getting another rabbit. With the breeding issues and not taking care of the babies, she sounds like she has pretty poor mothering instincts.

that is generally a sign of dominance. It isn't uncommon at all. The male not performing is usually a sign that he is overweight. If that is the case you may have to cut back a little on his feed for a while to get him in shape. If he isn't overweight you may just have to give him some time and multiple opportunities before he breeds. or get a new buck.

Is it overweight maybe? That is the most common reason why a buck won't mate. If that is not the case he may just be shy and need some time to get acquainted.

if it is overweight just cut back on the feed a little. If he is just shy and won't attempt to breed after multiple sessions, I would honestly look for another buck. That is the easiest way to fix that issue. It sounds crazy but you might want to check to see if it actually is a buck.

you didn't say so, just to be sure, make sure you are taking the doe to the buck's cage and not the buck to the doe's cage. Does can get very territorial. If you are already doing that and she is still being aggressive you may have to just give her a little time and try again. She may just not be ready to breed right now. If there is a chance that she is already pregnant, that may be the issue or if she is over 5 years old, she may just be too old to breed at that point.
