    As far as major renovations, there were none, just slight modifications. They changed the logo signs at the entrances and added faux ceiling panels in the early 90s to make it more modern looking along with changing the indoor lighting. And over time changed paint on the rails. And added an elevator to the center court but they had to get rid of the fountain and center ramp to do that. Other than that, that was about it.
    I was born in 96 and we lived in Norman until I was 8, and sometimes my mom and I would go to Crossroads whenever one of the stores had something my mom wanted that the Sooner Mall stores didn't have. I mostly remember us always going to Chick fil a for the chicken nuggets and ice cream cone, and we always sat down at the one table that was right outside the CFA and you could easily see the fountain from that vantage point. I loved that fountain. A guy actually posted on TH-cam a video of him and his friends goofing around and one of them actually was stupid enough to step foot in the fountain... I was so disappointed to find out they got rid of the fountain when we came back for the first time in a few years (right before they did the Plaza Mayor redo). And of course, it was sad to see it how far it had fallen. Loved Crossroads Mall.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll need to look for that video. I always love looking at mall fountains. To me it's always a bad sign for a mall when fountains are removed. My local one used to have three and now there's none

    It was the shooting that killed it - after that all you heard was people saying they were going to Penn Square or Quail Springs where they would be safe from "evil gang fights". The more interesting thing not touched on in this video was how shortly before 2000, the mall was so popular the lines to get up off the highway to get there for holiday shopping would back up onto the highways and the city was going to be redoing the I35/I240 interchange to correct the ramps for mall customers - it's a moot point now since the mall died - the city bought the apartments on the NW side of the interchange for construction of the new interchange, tore them down, and its still a field today...

      people were going to Penn Square way before then just because they had better clothes. We went to Crossroads to walk around and look for girls, grab some food or CDs, hats, obligatory walk around Spencers etc.. People still going but it was starting to die in 97 or even before then. Clothes or anything like that in the mid to late 90s you wanted Penn Square, runner up was Norman.. Norman was kinda small to me, never liked going there so i avoided it

      @@ThePodCastDojo this was def a Christmas mall.. Full of decorations and music. The center of the hallways would be filled with these little shopping stalls.. Jewelry, trinket sculptures and crystal things.

    I remember shopping here back in the 80s and 90s. I got my first 10 speed bike here at Montgomery Wards. I ate at the McDonalds on the 2nd floor. I remember playing Donkey Kong and Street Fighter at Le Mans and vaguely remember the bumper cars. I think Le Mans used tokens on their arcades too. There used to be a hobby store near Le Mans that sold model car and plane kits. Toys R Us was located across the street too. I walked that mall back in mid-2010s and reminisced the glory days of Crossroads. My brother said that the mall failed to keep up with the times and didn’t renovate. Crime was a factor too.

    Use to go here alot as a kid in the 80s and 90s. Great times with friends and family shopping and hanging out as most teens did in those days.

    I worked at John A. Browns in Crossroads Mall from 1984 through 1986. Very nice upscale store; I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. The mall culture and social life were thriving then. A shooting occurred in the mall's food court not too long after that; I remember the locals all referred to the food court as "The Shooting Gallery". That was the first serious crime that I can remember at Crossroads. Watching its demise has been sad. It was purchased for $6.5 million in May/June of 2021. Word is the new owner plans to turn the entire place into a marijuana factory. Crossroads Mall has literally gone to pot.

    I remember going there as a teenager in '76 but when Quail Springs opened i didn't go because Quail was half as far. Last I heard of Okc schools rent part of the east side and moved Sante Fe South there because it gave them more space.

    I think a big part of what is missed when it hear people talk about "what killed the mall?" Is that overwhelmingly the death of the middle class is what killed the mall . 50% of americans live paycheck to paycheck now . 70% cant afford a $ 500 emergency.10% of the workforce in america is unionized, in the 70s and 80s and even the first part if the 90s this number was much larger people had extra income to have fun with. If you want to know the true death of the mall look no further than the owner class that bled americans dry and refused to pay a living wage. Sad really is always loved the mall.

      Or like everything, times change and so do people. Generations later, people didn't want to park way out in huge parking lots to go into a huge building to shop. They would rather go to a strip mall and park in front of the store they want to shop in or better yet, shop online and not go into a store at all. It's really that simple. BTW, more people have the money to dine out and shop now than ever before. Nearly every person carries a $1000+ phone and eats out several times a week.

    • @Mindlessallen
      @Mindlessallen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @donnaw1047 over 70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck , real wages have stagnated. Your either naive to just how bad it is for working class Americans or terribly misinformed . Yes the economy and the stock market are great right now, but this is not an indicator for the common blue collar working class person. Money is tight. 50% of all people can't afford a $500 dollar emergency.

    • @donnaw1047
      @donnaw1047 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you are the one who is naive and uninformed. You must not get out much. Drive by any restaurant after 6:30 and observe the full parking lot any night of the week. Go to Bricktown and spend $20 - $40 just to park (if there's a vacancy), especially when there's a Thunder game. Do you really think most people aren't carrying a $1000 phone?? You must be trying to defend your political agenda.

    As a local- thank the gangs for the death of Crossroads. It had been the "ghetto" mall for a while but it wasn't too bad, after the shooting though it was just done. I still went there occasionally until it shut down for good, but I definitely had my head on a swivel going in the parking lot. Really pisses me off, Crossroads used to be amazing. I used to get so excited whenever my mom would poke her head in my room and say "get dressed, we're going to Crossroads!" So many good memories. Very sad that Plaza Mayor fell through too.

    Heritage Mall in nearby Midwest City OK closed first and was the only mall in the Oklahoma City metro area that had both Sears and Wards in the same mall. The Strip Mall took the place of the mall. Crime and gangs was a big factor in their demise.

    Now that it’s changed hands and now closed but eventually to reopen it looks as if (the exterior) a paint factory with an overdose on penicillin due to yeast infection has puked on it!
