Dying malls make me SO depressed 😩 I remember bustling malls and the 80's like they were yesterday. We still have a JCPENNEY here in Birmingham at the Galleria. We love you Jordan.

Born, raised, and still here in Jasper. I worked at a clothing store there (1993-1995) from age 17-19. It closed a long time ago. There was never a movie theatre there. That red decor place was originally a chick fil a then Grady’s. The old subway was where Lavish now is…..One thing I really miss was a water fountain/fall in the center which was filled in and is now where the tables and chairs are in middle. Bath n body and Belk keep it alive honestly. I can tell you everything about it. I modeled in the fashion shows for the store I worked at.

The walk down area near where JCPenney was, we called “The Hole”, it did have benches all around and teens called dibs so they could kinda hide away and make out. It was really cool but then they took out the seating. I was there from the day it first opened.

Yep, the movies were down the road about a mile or so. I remember during Christmas they would have the center area filled with tables selling all kinds of handmade gifts and such. The last slot on the left before the wall for the sports place used to be a little arcade, and you could smell the popcorn place that was down by kmart. Borders and k*bee toys and then gamestop were up by the penny's and the record store was down by the belks the space between the chick file and the doors used to be a Big Bee pharmacy if I remember correctly. As for Ling garden, I've found plastic in my food there twice, so I'd avoid it lol

My grandpa designed Southdale mall here in Minneapolis area. It was going dead but now I’m happy to report things have improved sooo much. They even added a new fancy grocery store & a gym attached to the mall. I hate to see malls dying. 😢

That’s wonderful that your grandpa designed Southdale! That is where I hung out with friends, shopped for school clothes and still live near it today. Our meeting place was always the large birdcage in the center court. I’m glad also that they have found things to fill the space.

If you are ever around Huntsville area, go through the town of Mooresville. It was established in 1818 and is very neat to see. I'm thankful our mall in Tupelo is still growing strong, you would enjoy it. It's sad to see all these that are dying out.

You are totally right. Malls were where you went to hang out. I used to go the one near my house to have some lunch and just look around. They were great to go to when it got too hot. Nice and air conditioned. Get some ice cream or a cold drink and just sit and cool off. I loved all the decorations for the various holidays. It's sad that malls are gone now. Thanks for doing this. Stay safe and take.

Jordan, thank you for following up on Jasper Mall. I am glad the mall is still open. I rewatched the documentary last night (tubi). It makes me sad to see malls struggling. When I was a teenager; that is where I hung out with my friends. We have at least one mall in my hometown that is struggling to stay open. Unfortunately, I don’t feel safe going there anymore. Most of the stores I shopped at, moved out.

Unfortunately a Netflix special on this mall won’t change the fact it’s not a market/ town people are rushing to relocate to for a new life. Jasper is sadly high crime, poverty and not so great schooling. Cost of living is low, so that’s a benefit, but there’s probably not enough employment opportunities to draw people and it’s a bit too far away from Birmingham. 😢

My town has two JC Penny’s left. One stand alone and one in the mall. I don’t know what it is about my city but we have 5 malls including an outlet mall. All of them are as busy as they always have been except one. The one that is slow was recently purchased by a local business and they’re revamping it. It’s been about six months since they took over and it’s slowly coming back to life. It’s sad to see malls in other cities empty like this. I can’t shop 100% online. I really have to try my clothes on before purchasing. I don’t want to mess with returning items through the mail and waiting for new sizes to arrive. Another thing is I’m only 42 but I have an old soul. I’d rather pick up a news paper than read articles on my phone.

We tried to open a store in a mall back in the '90 but the rent costs were ridiculous so we ended up passing on the opportunity

When I was a kid we always went to the stores in downtown Indianapolis to shop and they were crowded. As a teenager the malls started to open and they were there til I was in my 40's. Nowadays we have four malls that are still alive. Castleton, The Fashion Mall, Circle Center and Greenwood mall. Castleton doesn't have many stores now, The Fashion Mall is too pricey, Greenwood is too far away and Circle Center Mall is kind of dangerous these days. I'm 68 now and I really don't go to any of them. If I need to purchase something there is always Amazon. I'm retired now so I don't really need to purchase clothing for work. It's a different world we live in.

Growing up in the 80's Malls were where we went to get away from our parents to feel independent, hangout with our friends, see what fads were in, met girls and possibly our future spouses.
Now days everything's done online. I don't think my adult kids in their 20's have ever stepped foot inside a Mall growing up and that's my fault. My wife ordered everything online. You don't have to try it on in the store before you buy it because of free return policies. I should have brought 70', 80's and 90's culture to my kids before it was to late.

Wow ..when was this built? It has flooring and planters and benches like I remember in malls of the 70s. The weird area that steps down to nothing - I would bet at one time there was a staircase going down there that was covered up. Or a fountain that got filled in.

If you'll look closely at 14:48, you can see rectangles where supports used to attach to the wall. There used to be benches attached there. This was in front of the J.C. Penney, and I remember it as a little hang out area, but especially for guys/ husbands who were waiting for their wives/moms to come out of J.C. Penney. Also to the left of Penney's was a large video arcade when I was a teen, so the step-down area was a teen hangout at night. This mall was built in 1983 - 84, if I remember correctly. I live right down the road from this place!
Edit: It was built in 1981. I remember the woods there before the mall, and them building it; I was just a few years off.

The only reason our mall is still open is because Garfield’s, Belk, and Bath and Body Works, Jasper is truck stop town, if you want entertainment then you go literally anywhere but here. We had 2 places to hang out at, the bowling alley and the skating rink, the skating rink closed this year and when it was open it was only open Saturday and Friday. All we have are some restaurants (which aren’t very good)

I am so grateful that I got to live through healthy, happy, thriving mall life. I think that the pandemic just unfortunately made so many people really afraid to go out… once I got my vaccination I am back in the world again . Who really wants to buy something on-line that you can’t see, smell or touch and you can’t see the real color of annnd you are still paying retail prices, when there’s not a retail store involved. Oh, but at least you have to wait three weeks for it and hope it’s not broken, when you could be walking out with it in hand, I mean at least there’s thaaat, right?

Funny thing is, the wealthy malls in the wealthy areas are buzzing and thriving. Malls are still a success and popular but only in wealthy areas. If you have lots of money you like going into stores and spending it, regardless of internet shopping. I was visiting silicone valley a few months ago and the mall there is something else. Instead of JC Penny it's Gucci and Chanel.

That is sad. When those large retailers that rent the huge spaces depart - it’s usually the end of a mall. The dead malls here in SoCal have to be torn down or repurposed, or they become havens for violent homeless people.

The rent is too high. I think if the would negotiate with the stores it would help a lot.

I still like shopping. The 'however' is the attitudes of sales staff and management. The deceptive sales practices and selection. It's just not worth it most times.

The mall in Florence Alabama is all but dead. Belks and Dillard's are the last big box stores left. Sears and Penneys are long gone along with the entire food court.
Bridge Street in Huntsville is the new way to shop I love the vibe

There was never a theater in Jasper Mall. Chick-fil-et was first store on the left. Robin's Nest prices were way too high, just like Deb and Co. is. The mall started really going down when
K B Toys and K Mart went out of business about 2000 to 2012 or so. When K Mart took the ice cream and hot dog stand out. Subway was where Lavish is. City of Jasper's focus has changed to the downtown area around the county courthouse and the other strip malls like at the one at Hobby Lobby/TJ Maxx and another at Big Lots/Ollie's.
There is no understanding of marketing in Walker County. Clothing stores, home decor and fast food are everywhere. There is an overproliferation because the city is only interested in the tax dollars.
Let me know if you come back through.

Let's face it, malls are going the way of the Main Street in many towns. Before we bring the malls - that were full of nationwide chain stores - back, how about let's bring old mom & pop's small businesses back first.

The mall I grew up going to in niles Ohio is booming. They added a hotel and a target not to many years ago plus the surrounding area is booming. Youd like the Eastwood mall it's going very strong out of all the stores there might be 3 empty stores inside the mall plus Boscovs just opened about a year or so ago. It's far from a dead mall. So there are still malls.

We got it just the way we want it here, if we want to watch a move or eat a fancy dinner we drive 35-40 minutes, I like it the way it is. People that are not from here talking about high crime, bad schools and poverty have no idea. We are doing just fine stay where you are.

There are various reasons we have seen the decline in popularity of malls over the past few decade’s. It is sad that there generations that will never understand about going to the mall wax the thing to do, especially on the weekends with your date. Just like earlier generations enjoy taking their dates to the drive in diner, and cruising. Today’s generation doesn’t understand that either.

The problem is that people rather be unsocial and avoid malls. Social media isn’t socializing. I’m in my 40’s and work with a young men in their 20’s that have zero skills of just approaching females. For me at least; the malls is where I crashed and burned yet honed in my social skills like approaching people. It’s sad as society has changed for the worse with social media and internet in general .
