Still too much weirdness. That infotainment screen looks like an afterthought, and not part of the dash. If there are no HVAC or basic ICE physical controls, thats a dealbreaker.
Still waiting for a straight answer on why I can't just turn up at a charge point and buy £20 worth of electricity, and pay in cash, rather than faff about with accounts and apps.

Had the chance to drive both recently. And I found out that the two cars are worlds apart. The Tesla is cheaper but can't hold a candle to the BMW in terms of quality, handling or styling. BMW the best choice on EV market.

So happy that I live in California where there are over 6,100 DC fast chargers that include 282 Tesla superchargers. In the US there's a federal tax rebate of $7500 (not available for Tesla) and another $5250 in local and county incentives which makes the purchase of the BMW cheaper. So no big edge for Tesla in either regard. Needless to say, I will receive the delivery of my i4 edrive40 in two weeks. Love hearing perspectives from across the pond.

Currently have a 2 year old BMW i3 so have been looking to upgrade (+ range and + space) so to speak to either the Tesla M3 or the BMW i4 40 M Sport.
Drove both cars last week and signed up for the i4 today, I understand the supercharger network is a real bonus when driving electric but the quality of the BMW was leagues ahead.
With the frequent price reductions Tesla are making I was concerned about residual values in the future which also played into my long term thinking.

Here in New Zealand the BMW is sold through a usual importer/dealership arrangement and is a lot more expensive than a Model 3 (which is sold direct). i4 eDrive 40 is $109,900. Base Model 3 is $72,400 and qualifies for an $8625 rebate bringing it down to $63,775 (the BMW does not qualify because it is over $80,000).
Therefore, the big price gap means you are effectively paying for exclusivity and a load of knobs and buttons.
I enjoy the handling of my Model 3 Performance but I also enjoy the minimalist interior, the ergonomics of it, the space, and the way it doesn’t try to look like an expensive or high-performance car. It’s simple and works really well. The traditional brands don’t seem to hold much advantage any more. Time will tell

What better tech does Tesla have? The BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, Chevy, and Cadillac, to name a few all have the same tech. Maybe not the fart mode and other shenanigans but it has drive (autopilot) and parking assistance that actually works (BMW has reverse assistance), drive recorder, and climate control. Most Teslas don't have the FSP beta that they have been promised for the past how many years? 5 or more? If all Tesla has is tech then they are truly losing the game because that's EASY to do. The tech is software that anyone can add. Tesla doesn't have a market on software developers. Check out how well BMW's HUD works. Oh, I forgot Tesla doesn't offer HUD. Sorry but let's just be honest. Tesla should be afraid. The only edge they have is fast losing ground. I appreciate their lead on moving EVs to where they are now. However, they should get out of the way if they aren't willing to continue innovating, improving the quality of their cars, or updating their design which hasn't changed in the 10 years they've been around.

Interesting. My Tesla price has increased about $12,000 CDN in the last 1.5 years since I bought mine. I am enjoying my Tesla, but I am always keeping a close eye on the competition and on the development of the CCS charging network in Canada. The i4M50 definitely more price competitive than Audi, Mercedes or Porsche. Competition is good. Phil

Let’s address another thing - the one nobody is addressing in all these videos: can you trade in your old ICE car when buying a new Tesla? I don’t want to deal with hundreds of phone calls and a range of potential buyers wasting my time. If I want to buy a new Tesla, I have to sell my old car myself. That is also a huge advantage of the legacy car producers which will let you trade in your old car.

The last time someone used buttons for turn signals was in the 60's. There's a reason why wheel stalks work so well. Why do you all keep looking at the car, and expecting it to “beat Tesla” by being in some way better?
It’s not a Tesla killer, because BMW can’t make it at scale - won’t make or sell over 1million units this year and isn’t making 20% markup on each unit sold.
It’s undoubtedly a great car, and design wise it gives a M3 a run for its money and may even be superior. Hey, I ordered one - it’s a great car.
But Tesla isn’t a software company any more. It’s the most innovative car manufacturer, with gigapresses and simplified design / options trees to facilitate an unprecedented ramp up in production. These few legacy auto EVs with production runs in the few 10,000s aren’t really in the game yet.

    • @VickiStokes
      @VickiStokes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The BMW i3 has been in the game for 10 years. The i4 is their next step forward. They are NOT novices at this. They are trying to do what Tesla is not doing Creating a reliable, and quality product. Flawed paint and unaligned doors are not something a company that's been in business for 10 years does and continue to be successful. Other manufacturers, especially the luxury ones like Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, and Audi have the assembly lines, experience, and money to go forward with EV manufacturing. If they want to continue selling to one of the biggest EV markets with over 930,000 EVs, California, they will all need to ramp up production because the sale of ICE cars in that state will soon be banned.

@@gothmog2441 I hope you are right. However, I live in a state where Teslas are #1 and #2 car in annual sales for all cars ICE and EVs. Yesterday, I counted 50 Teslas during my drive around the area. Count the Tesla is a family game we play. The chief complaint I hear from the many Tesla owners continues to be quality issues, paint, rattling noises, and other build issues as well as customer service upon delivery. They are usually fixed but have to be noted upon delivery or they will have to be paid out of pocket. One friend had the noise issue return; due to door seal, and had to pay for a fix. I respect Tesla because they mass produced EVs and created the charging network that provided the proof in concept. Not easy with gas industry in the ear and pockets of the politicians that have been standing in the way of EV adoption. I love that I live in a state that is embracing EVs. However, politics changes which could affect adoption. I thank Tesla for pushing the auto industry kicking and screaming toward a future without a dependence on the petroleum industry. So, I'm crossing my fingers that you are correct and suspect you truly are due to the extreme number of Teslas on the road. I don't think people are stupid or that much of a fanboy to ignore serious issues with quality. My final comment is almost all Tesla owners talk about how reliable their cars are; especially the ones that have owned several.

We bought the model 3 in November 2021. Sold it in Jan 2022 as the paint quality is unacceptable and Tesla refused to fix it. Wish we had gone for the I4. I don't see how anyone can recommend a model 3, is build quality not a thing?
Imagine reviewing any car on the planet, and coming to the conclusion that a tesla is better
Call me when your rear lights are full of water
or when your power steering fails
or when your paint-job isn't even
or when you have rust problems (especially Model 3).
or when your windows don't close
or when your doors open by themselves
or when your lights don't work properly
or when your trunk lid is full of water

...but by all means, keep recommending that to your viewers.

If you aren't tall, the front seat will be further ahead as well, leaving plenty of space for your legs in the back seat. If you are shorter, you will probably put your front seat higher up to see better, meaning the back seat travellers will get their feet under the front seats sitting even more comfortable. Rest assure, that if you are ok with the 3- or 4-series back seats, you will be perfectly fine in the i4 as well. However, tall(!) people won't sit that comfortable in the back of either BMW i4 or Tesla Mod 3. But, how often is that relevant, and for how long distances, or time...? When will lazy car journalists stop comparing every car to a Tesla and banging on about range. For a long journey 200 miles is as much as 95% of folk can bear without a break no matter how comfy your ride is.
Tesla excels in range and charging but that is a consequence of being developed for the US market. I would guess that even in the US it is a very small fraction of owners who bang out 300 mile plus journeys more than once or twice a year.
What is more important yet glossed over is the accessibility of controls via buttons and knobs to stop folk being absorbed by a video game like scenario to adjust the Aircon or change the radio station. Also, cars that do everything through a screen are instantly aged and less likely to be on the road in 15 years. Think of the environmental disaster of all these cars, fossil and ev, which become bricks simply due to the electronics no longer being supported or software no longer being updated.
Time for some proper journalism on futureproofing and the looming landfill issues of dead cars methinks.

As I’m happy to type in a destination rather than try and write one left handed on the idrive controller I can live with that.

Electric cars are heavy, and slow. 335 bhp but only 118mph and only 5.7 0-62 mph is hopeless. Furthermore, in time you'll need a new battery, also in cold weather your battery drains quicker (that why people leaving their cars at an airport on a skiing holiday come back to find the battery dead). And finally electricity is now the same price as the equivalent petrol. There are no wins with electric cars. Wait for hydrogen I reckon.

The argumente of tesla superchargers is actually not very relevant at all. I have hD a model 3 and now driving a etron. I never needed to charge at a public charger or supercharger even one time. Im charging at home and at work no problems at all.

Tesla vehicles are quite expensive to fix. According to RepairPal, the average yearly Tesla maintenance cost is about $832 per year. The average among all car brands was a much lower $652 per year. Teslas also have the third-worst reliability score among all automakers.

Do you own a new Tesla? How much are you spending to fix yours? I own a 2021 Model 3 for the last 1.5 years. and have spent $0.00 to fix it so far. Everything but tires and brake pads (hardly ever used) ar covered under warranty for the first 4 years. There is no scheduled maintenance to pay through the nose for, but if you are wise you will have your brakes cleaned and lubricated once a year, again because they are seldom used. Older Model S and X are less reliable.

Why do they still have those protruding gear sticks in the centre console? They should've been gone in 2015. Take up so much space.

it can't as BMW only intends to build 25000 of them in all 2022! Why, because like all others except Tesla, they won't earn any money with them lacking a margin and they cannibalise their own ICE car sales. These cars will likely be bought by BMW 3,4 and 5-series buyers.

In The Netherlands the Tesla charger network is open for non-Tesla cars. I guess that makes it a draw…

I along with probably 90% of the people watching reviews for electric cars are amazed at the price of these cars as they are way out of my spending league. Would absolutely love to get one as I do feel that they are the way to go to help save the environment and to drastically reduce the carbon emissions in the towns and cities.

And when you consider what you get from the likes of the bargain basement Dacia Sandero Stepway, (and Skoda etc) it puts all these new electric cars in the high performance high price bracket, beyond most people's wallets.

There are lots of EV that match an ICE on price. And people watching 4 series EV expecting Corsa money should just get that Corsa. Since that's probably the car type they drive ATM.

The best you can do for the environment is to keep driving your current car as long as possible, and switch to a bicycle when in town. EV manufacturing is actually not good at all for the environment. Of course, if you need to buy a new car better an electric than an ICE.

I just ordered the i4 and I will save about $30.000 over 5 yeas compared to my current diesel vehicle. This depends on many factors but try to make that calculation for yourself. In my case both the lease and running are cost clearly lower. I also save $500 a year on a city parking for example, no highway tax etc…no government subsidy towards the car

In the US there are incentives that are income-based to allow lower-income people to avoid EVs. In the California Bay Area, there is a $9500 incentive. There are other non-income based like the $7500 federal tax rebate. Also, other local non-income-based incentives add up to thousands more. I am eligible for the federal tax rebate and about $5250 more in incentives. Eligibility for one does not preclude the others. So, a low-income individual could discount $10K or more of the price and take the $7500 tax rebate to either make the car payments or refinance the car less the $7500.

Having had experience of American build quality, the typical US car starts to fall to pieces after about two years.

      A. Tesla is not a "typical" US car and, B. BMWs are full of plastic and are known to be a nightmare to maintain (I own one, don't even go there - I am now a self-taught mechanic, thanks to BMW).
