Getting baby chicks for the first time in 10 years. It was so nice to have such a comprehensive refresher! One of the best put together videos I've seen! Thanks a lot!
I had my 8 chicks in a 125 gallon tote with a lid and rabbit fencing cut to fit and attached. I had to double it because one flew out and was sitting next to the heating lamp. But once they outgrew that container I moved them to a popup small animal playpen. It's working great. But there's at least two who are constantly looking for a way out. But they're growing fast and needed more space. They're enjoying the room. And 😂😂 with the Cougar to feed.
we had one chick pass away yesterday. so we have been looking everywhere to see what we did wrong. seeing that part at the end made me feel a little bit better. we checked everything you mentioned as well so thank you for the video.
Oh no! I’m sorry! I’m happy you saw this today. It really does suck but it happens, I just wanted to make sure people realized that it’s something that can easily happen, and to try to keep pushing forward without beating yourself up too much.
We’re on day 14 of incubating. Got the coop built yesterday & I’ll be setting up the brooder box sometime this week. Gotta run to the store for some bedding. Loving your videos. Feeling very prepared for chickens. New to the channel. Have you always been a chicken channel?
That’s exciting! Good luck! Welcome! We started as a pepper growing channel, moved to a gardening channel, and then landed on a “grow your own food” type of channel. We just love being as self sufficient as possible so it was a pretty natural channel progression! This winter is when we really started doing chicken videos because there wasn’t much happening with gardening 😂
The nice thing about most puppy pads is they are extremely absorbent and usually still feel dry to the touch when they get wet, so if your chicks spill water somehow it can help protect them from getting wet. I would just make sure they aren't scented because birds can be sensitive to that type of thing. I like the bulk box of puppy pads from Costco. They are a great deal and aren't scented.
Do I need nesting boxes for my new chickens? I’m saving up for one of those best best box roll away boxes. But I’m wondering if I need one now when they aren’t even laying yet.
I appreciate a video about farming/home steading that is just educational that isn't full of snide bigoted comments .. makes it so nice to watch i just went threw like 5 videos and each dude talking made ridiculous hateful political comments it's exaughsting. I wanna learn about farming and home steading not personal views.
If keeping the chicks indoors with a heating plate like yours what temp should the room be at? I’m trying to keep the room around 80. I’m guessing they may stay under the heater for awhile to rest. Thanks
I had my first chicken pass away last week after 2 years of raising chicks. We have 8 10 week+ chickens in a big brooder with out 4 ducks and our 2 Chinese geese because I’m building a new shed for them at the moment. We had 1 chicken that grew all its feathers but never actually grew in size and I heard it was something that happens ever now and then where they stay tiny. So I separated the little guy from all the big ones and gave him his own little tote with our smallest duck. The little chicken knew how to fly and move around pretty good so I came home from work to find him flattened out in the bedding but still alive, he past minutes later and I talked to a local farmer and he said the geese or bigger ducks either trampled him by accident or intentionally took him out because he was so tiny. It was easily one of the saddest times I’ve had keeping any animal. He was my favorite chicken and I was going to keep him through his entire life even if he stayed mini, I named him chicken nugget….:(

Thanks. Great timing as I ordered baby chicks & they will be shipped in August. Plenty of time to be thoroughly prepared. TY
Awesome! I’m happy to help, good luck with your chicks!
Got 36 eggs in the incubator. Barnyard mix layers. At day 6 and excited. Candling tonight.
I literally just got excited for you 😂! I want to do that!
Also thank you for your videos!! I feel more prepared for getting the babies this week!
You’re welcome! Thank YOU for watching them!
Keep up the good content! I’ll be getting my chicks March 31st, first time.
Hey thanks!
That’s exciting! Good luck!
Are you using a brooder heater and the heat lamp?
Great video! Well done!
Hey thanks, I appreciate it!
Great video!❤
Great video. I am up in Ogden, I thought those jets sounded familiar. Putting my first coop together now. Thanks for the great information.

I have puppy pads, is that an ok alternative to the paper towels? Seems like it should be but I don't want to be wrong! Thanks!
Absolutely! Those work great!
An expensive solution but I see no problem with it.

What they said!! ^^^
Only thing I'd add is to check the date on the electrolytes as my local TS has them but they are over 1year out of date 😬
No way?! I wouldn’t have even thought to look at that! Definitely good to know, now I’m going to go look when I get home 😂
For bedding every expert (degree holding) has said to use cotton seed hulls, and to avoid chips or shavings.
good video

Nope! You’re good to wait a little while! I would just have one a couple weeks before they are supposed to start laying!

My chicks are only 2 days old and are already trying to jump out of their box 😅😂
And yes I liked my own comment 😎
Can we zeolite in the brooder, or is that just for older pullers?
What about the pine cat litter? It absorbs & leaves the litter feeling dry & makes for great compost..

Thank you so much for your sharing easy-to-understand detailed information, 😎😎😎🐣🐤🐥🐔

Oh no, that’s so sad!! Definitely keep in mind that it happens, we can’t save them all no matter how hard we try. Poor little thing!
No dust with him and no smell
Has a cougar to feed.....🤣
I did not purchase them I found him abandoned on my balcony
We didn't find out about pasty butt until we lost a chick that was still in the incubator....less than 24 hours😥
