There is actually a law called the Homestead Act, that makes it illegal for any city or county to make owning chickens, gardens, or other things that people use as a food source, illegal. I am pretty sure it covers every U.S. state, but many don't realize it. That means they v cannot prevent you from having chickens or gardens or other things that you use to feed yourself and survive. Yes, there are rules and regulations to prevent walking on other people's rights and freedoms, but they have no right to prevent it as long as you are being respectful of neighbors in the process. It's worth researching for anyone interested, at least.
If you put a heater in your water bucket for winter the water nipples do not freeze. I have be using them for years. They are great year round. This is the one I used and it works great. I got it from Amazon. Hope that helps. @@WhitepepperFarmshomestead my brother also sent me a video of someone who put a water bottle filled with lots of ice in some water in the waterer. It’s using the same method as ice melt salt. Both methods work but I went with the birdbath heater through the lid after drilling a hole for the cord. And you could tape the hole closed for the summer to avoid getting dust in the water.
I’ve seen the salt in the bottle trick, maybe I should try that! I also think I purposely give myself excuses to go out there and see them throughout the day 😂

I lost my one chick that was sickly. I tried sugar water and an egg yolk but she wasn't eating or drinking. Found her dead this morning. RIP. So now I have 14 chicks. I only wanted 6. And I couldn't get anyone interested in buying the rest. But fortunately, I added enough roosting bars.

Thanks for the videos. I live way up north where it's winter like 7 months a year. I have a 18'x30' coop with a 18' x 15' run with 2 large roosts made from tree limbs, 24 (almost) self cleaning nesting boxes for 27 birds. I use heat lamps on temperature sensor outlets to try and maintain around 35° in the coop. I use heated waterers because it still freezes in there when it's below zero for days on end and I have a job and can't babysit frozen waterers all day so I have to use heat sources. Plus advantage of having some heat is all the eggs don't freeze daily. I still get a few frozen eggs when it's below zero for extended periods. I think extra heat is dependent on where you live. If you are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan you may need them more than someone in Missouri. I only feed NON GMO, certified organic feeds, organic vegetables, they get oyster shells for calcium and digestion and black fly larvae for treats.

You do not have to use medicated crumbles they have a Probiotic chick starter that does not have antibiotics in it which is what your medicated crumbles have in it. We have been using this Probiotic chick starter for years now and have not lost a chick.
I had chickens for years, and i used a peak roof 8'x3', 4-6 chcikens were always happy,they laid eggs daily, and i had no run for them. Most people believe that chickens need so much room inside a coop, with your info about 4' per chicken, I believe, is a bit misleading. When chickens go inside the coop to sleep, they all huddle together, and 4 chickens will literally sit in an area about 1'x2' that's it. When they wake up, they move around, so having room to move in a run is better to have some space, but having a 12'x8' run for chickens isn't necessary, as long as they can move around and forage a bit in sand etc will work just fine
Wonderful video! One thing though, they say not to feed Silkies medicated chick feed. Amprolium blocks the absorption of thiamine/ vitamin B and silkies have an issue with vitamin deficiencies....again, just what I've been told. As far as I know, all other chickens are fine. I have silkies and worried about it, so it may be worth looking into with silkies only and decide what works best for you as a chicken parent. But everyone is different and honestly, at the end of the day who knows! We can't ask the chickens and we all have them because we care about them. ❤️
Skunks? I didn't know I had to worry about skunks! I live in the Arizona desert, we usually have to worry hawk, cougar, and coyote, and the occasional cat (we live in town), skunk danger is new to me!
So here our biggest issue is Raccoons but skunks are right behind them! We haven’t had a skunk yet but our friend down the road has lost quite a few to them and he’s been able to trap a few skunks as well. He has a bigger skunk problem than raccoon problem!
Me and my old man are getting property and setting up a coop of 3 hens and a rooster because we plan on living off the eggs and meat. I plan on getting Orpington chicks in March. I'm super excited and love all the tips! We already started compost.
I'm at war with a stoat. We've got raccoons, foxes, skunks, hawks, and eagles on a daily basis. The stoat is my issue. Little bastard only needs a tiny hole in the coup to get in and wiped out my entire flock over the winter. So the new ladies got to take over my good shed as a coup.
I had to google what a stoat was 😂. We have some mink here which seem to be pretty similar. I’ve seen those squeeze through TINY holes and kill entire flocks. I’m sorry you have to deal with that!
First thing we really enjoy your videos We have had chickens now for 9 years a lot of things caring for chickens is common sense. But it is great that people like you help fill in those other areas. Far as the winter watering. I made 2 watering stations 1 inside and 1 out side and that is for those bitter cold days and nights and when the door will not open. I took a chimney flue liner cut it 10" tall put a 60 watt light inside with a freeze control outlet (it turns on at 38 degrees) take a 12" aluminum bake pan placed it upside down over the light. Place your waterer on top then cover it with heavy duty towel. (DO NOT let the towel slide down into the tray you suck all the water into the towel) You my have to put a100 watt bulb when the temperature goes to below zero (DO NOT FORGET TO CHANGE IT BACK WHEN TEMPERATURE GOES BACK UP)
We just got our chicks too and had to drive 2 hours away to get them because they’re sold out everywhere and they we had been told “good luck!” to finding any. So glad to have found some!!
I do have a heat lamp in our coop. It mainly is on a timer to extend light time during the winter. I give the chickens a couple months break from laying eggs between September and end of November, and then put the light on them in the morning and evening so they have light 5am to 9 pm. They start laying again in time for Christmas baking, yet they have a break. However, like I said, it is on a timer (5-9am and 5-9pm), so they don't have that heat on all the time. The only time I had the heat lamp on all the time was when the outside temps were below zero at night or in the single digits during the day. I felt that it was just a little too cold for them.
Regarding predators - don’t forget the most common suburban predator - domesticated house cats and dogs. They will happily kill and eat a chicken. Or the eggs. They’re not choosy.

I know what you said about Heat Lamps...but what about baby Chicks....>??? They dont have the adult feathers to keep them warm. I had 4 babys that were huddled in a corner ...thought they were gonna die....I put in a lamp to keep them warm. we were in 55 degree weather and they were Freakin still huddling before i put that lamp in.
Chick’s definitely need heat. We use a chick brooder that uses a radiant heat panel rather than a lamp, BUT if you don’t have one of those, heat lamps are more or less your only option! Just be safe and make sure it’s secure, can’t fall, and the chicks can’t jump up and hit it!
I am going to be having my first chickens in the coop in next couple of months or so. Needs less to say I am getting the coop ready slowly but steadily. My question is that do I put a small exhaust fan for circulation or can I get by without this expense. I have seen them on amazon. They are solar and don't cost an arm and a leg. I am asking because then I opened my shed to convert it into a coop for the first time. I felt like I am going to be baked in there. Honest answers are appreciated and thanks for the help.
You know what the misconception with chicken math is IMO(in addition to the cuteness overload cause i do get that also). I am new so this is just based on my months of research leading up to my own chicks. All these people who were experienced that I asked ALL told me the same thing....get extra chicks cause you'll end up with one or two dropping and I just didn't follow that at all. I knew the space I had was enough for four and I stuck with that NO MATTER HOW TEMPTED I WAS. One or Two chicks die its going to suck but wouldnt it suck WORSE for the chickens, if I got EIGHT and all survived to be shoved in my coop made for four? Thats just my observation I made over the past few months of research and asking fellow farmers for advice.
I agree with you 100% on this. I think that line of thinking is more for larger farms and bigger operations. For most backyard people it’s better to stick with what you’re ALLOWED to have. This is the first year we have had any chicks die ever, so it’s not something that is super common. Good for you for thinking that through!
I appreciate your comment but I disagree. There are plenty of ways of keeping the chickens warm without a heat lamp. The food you feed them, insulating the coop, keeping them dry and draft free, etc. The water on the other hand is more difficult without a heat lamp, but there are heated waterers that are much safer than a heat lamp.
We have been spoiled, friends have chickens- the eggs are so much better than store eggs! We won’t be able to have chickens this year- next year? Oh yeah!

Some people use heat lamps to try to keep the chickens laying eggs all winter, though some say chickens need the winter break as it's natural which makes sense, yet I wonder does laying eggs all year effect a chicken in texas....Texas....? One thing you mentioned was chick starter feed how people have extra so they use it on the adult chickens, yes this would be silly in the spring summer and fall as you'd lose egg production but sounds it being higher in protein less calcium would make the chick feed a good source of protein feed for the chickens during the winter when they stop ir dang near stop laying eggs. Am I wrong? Seems having the vents up high would let all the hot air at the top of the coop out. I'd maybe try a hole down low with a pipe going up the wall maybe to the halfway point from floor to ceiling. Or maybe a solar powered fan setup to move air through for those days where there isn't much wind. Could set it on a timer to kick on every 2 hours or something.
Just an FYI most people don't use the medicated chick starter they use the non-medicated because the medicated is for one specific thing and God only knows with chemicals they're actually giving you to feed your chickens you can substitute garlic and have healthier

@@noahsturgill20 I agree. Beware the "experts". They always seem to point toward over-medicating everything and everyone. I feed my chicks some real sourdough (fermented bread, not fake sourdough), and put some unfiltered apple cider vinegar in their water. As they get older, I feed them fermented sauerkraut and I ferment their scratch grains. My hens are very healthy, and my chicks are doing great!
I am new with chicks we just got 6 chicks, we have them in the house, we went from heating lamp to a brooder plate. We are in Alabama, it is not cold in the house. We've had them for a week. Do we need a heat source
Different people set it up in different ways! We have ours in our coop, but we have the room for it! Set it up wherever works best for your coop and run area!
Different breeds are suited for different regional temps. Like very hot or very cold areas. Just do your research on your type of bird for your climate.

I have ameraucanas, Easter eggers, Orpingtons, and (new this spring) sapphire gems and wyandottes. They are all decent layers, pretty hardy for a wide range of temperatures, and pretty friendly. I adore my girls. There is a book called Storeys Guide to Raising Chickens. I highly recommend getting a copy and reading it. It has great advice about breeds, housing, diet, general care, even some basic first aid.
I would research what chickens do best in your area or north vs south in regards to living in the cold vs heat. Also, how many eggs they produce is another factor to consider. I’m partial to certain color of eggs, so I also chose my chickens based on this factor. Do you want chickens that are docile and easy to handle or otherwise? How much space do you have? My coop said that I can have 6 chickens but I only have 3 so that they have room to move around. I also don’t have roosters as they aren’t allowed in my city and I don’t need any as chickens do produce eggs without a rooster. This video is exactly what you need and is an excellent source of information.
Sadly, I only let my chickens free range only when I have the time to be with them due to hawks and my dogs have to be in the house. I try to let them out as often as I can for humane purposes.
I enjoy the shared information in your videos and actually give my two hens all the kitchen scraps I produce, including cooked beans and pasta or rice, but I have given them raw lentils just to find out in your next video that it should not be done?? Is it a no-no? lentils usually do not have to be cooked as long as beans and are softer. They did not seem to bother the birds
My mom and grand mother raised chickens for years they took all scraps out to them they said chickens know what not to eat. Dont know if thats true but never see any of them get sick or die.

Hi! English is a VERY hard language to learn, so good job!! It sounds like they aren’t wanting to stay up on the perch? They keep wanting to go down onto the ground? As long as their coop is secure and nothing can get in there, they should be totally fine! As they get older they will want to climb and be up higher more but when they are young they often times enjoy being down on the ground, it’s easier for them! It will come with time, you’re doing great!
how does chicken math work with peafowl? I went to buy some chickens last December (I did buy them) but... i may or may not have also bought a male and female peacock. Am I doomed?
Chickens love scraps.... except mine... they're so bougie. They wont eat lettuce or anything plain. They want berries, tomatoes, and anything big and juicy. They also wont eat the skins on basically anything. They'll eat the meat of the veggie or fruit and leave the peels/skins behind.
Your chicks should have enough feathers to keep warm before going to the coop. They will bundle together to keep warm enough for winter. The breed that you select will also have impact on their winter hardiness. They, too need a rest from egg laying in which winter provides. So no, don’t bring them indoors. Don’t need a lamp or heat lamp either. Just make sure they have fresh water with a heated dog bowl in case of freezing temperatures.
We moved from a 3 bedroom apartment with 5 kids to a 6 bedroom house on a half acre, if we could afford property we would have property 😂. Once the kids start moving out though.. the plan is a small house with a lot of land!

If we didn’t each have kids from previous marriages that’s 100% where we would live. The Pacific Northwest is my happy place!

Where we are at it all used to be farmland. 4 acre goat farm next door to us and a horse property two doors down. They’ve slowly sold off the land and built more house and it’s driving us crazy. Once the kids are older we are out of here!

For water in the winter I heard of using an aquarium heater to heat the water to keep it from freezing. Planning try it next winter.

We just got our chicks too and had to drive 2 hours away to get them because they’re sold out everywhere and they we had been told “good luck!” to finding any. So glad to have found some!!

I do have a heat lamp in our coop. It mainly is on a timer to extend light time during the winter. I give the chickens a couple months break from laying eggs between September and end of November, and then put the light on them in the morning and evening so they have light 5am to 9 pm. They start laying again in time for Christmas baking, yet they have a break.
However, like I said, it is on a timer (5-9am and 5-9pm), so they don't have that heat on all the time. The only time I had the heat lamp on all the time was when the outside temps were below zero at night or in the single digits during the day. I felt that it was just a little too cold for them.

Regarding predators - don’t forget the most common suburban predator - domesticated house cats and dogs. They will happily kill and eat a chicken. Or the eggs. They’re not choosy.

Hey neighbour! Your videos are great!! I’ve been binge watching them as we prepare to get chickens next spring. We are planning to get chicks in spring and butcher in the fall. Does that make sense to you?
I know what you said about Heat Lamps...but what about baby Chicks....>??? They dont have the adult feathers to keep them warm. I had 4 babys that were huddled in a corner ...thought they were gonna die....I put in a lamp to keep them warm. we were in 55 degree weather and they were Freakin still huddling before i put that lamp in.
Chick’s definitely need heat. We use a chick brooder that uses a radiant heat panel rather than a lamp, BUT if you don’t have one of those, heat lamps are more or less your only option! Just be safe and make sure it’s secure, can’t fall, and the chicks can’t jump up and hit it!
I am going to be having my first chickens in the coop in next couple of months or so. Needs less to say I am getting the coop ready slowly but steadily. My question is that do I put a small exhaust fan for circulation or can I get by without this expense. I have seen them on amazon. They are solar and don't cost an arm and a leg. I am asking because then I opened my shed to convert it into a coop for the first time. I felt like I am going to be baked in there. Honest answers are appreciated and thanks for the help.
You know what the misconception with chicken math is IMO(in addition to the cuteness overload cause i do get that also). I am new so this is just based on my months of research leading up to my own chicks. All these people who were experienced that I asked ALL told me the same thing....get extra chicks cause you'll end up with one or two dropping and I just didn't follow that at all. I knew the space I had was enough for four and I stuck with that NO MATTER HOW TEMPTED I WAS. One or Two chicks die its going to suck but wouldnt it suck WORSE for the chickens, if I got EIGHT and all survived to be shoved in my coop made for four? Thats just my observation I made over the past few months of research and asking fellow farmers for advice.
I agree with you 100% on this. I think that line of thinking is more for larger farms and bigger operations. For most backyard people it’s better to stick with what you’re ALLOWED to have. This is the first year we have had any chicks die ever, so it’s not something that is super common. Good for you for thinking that through!

I appreciate your comment but I disagree. There are plenty of ways of keeping the chickens warm without a heat lamp. The food you feed them, insulating the coop, keeping them dry and draft free, etc.
The water on the other hand is more difficult without a heat lamp, but there are heated waterers that are much safer than a heat lamp.
I agree it cost money but I use two incase and bulb goes out for babies chicks
I just use a heated dog bowl to keep the water from freezing

The only time that chickens need heat is when they are babies. Once they have feathers it's not needed
Some people use heat lamps to try to keep the chickens laying eggs all winter, though some say chickens need the winter break as it's natural which makes sense, yet I wonder does laying eggs all year effect a chicken in texas....Texas....?
One thing you mentioned was chick starter feed how people have extra so they use it on the adult chickens, yes this would be silly in the spring summer and fall as you'd lose egg production but sounds it being higher in protein less calcium would make the chick feed a good source of protein feed for the chickens during the winter when they stop ir dang near stop laying eggs. Am I wrong?
Seems having the vents up high would let all the hot air at the top of the coop out. I'd maybe try a hole down low with a pipe going up the wall maybe to the halfway point from floor to ceiling. Or maybe a solar powered fan setup to move air through for those days where there isn't much wind. Could set it on a timer to kick on every 2 hours or something.

Just an FYI most people don't use the medicated chick starter they use the non-medicated because the medicated is for one specific thing and God only knows with chemicals they're actually giving you to feed your chickens you can substitute garlic and have healthier
I understand why you’d be worried about it, but I disagree. Most people I know, I’ve talked to, and most experts all agree medicated is the way to go.

I feed my chicks some real sourdough (fermented bread, not fake sourdough), and put some unfiltered apple cider vinegar in their water.
As they get older, I feed them fermented sauerkraut and I ferment their scratch grains. My hens are very healthy, and my chicks are doing great!

Different people set it up in different ways! We have ours in our coop, but we have the room for it! Set it up wherever works best for your coop and run area!

Different breeds are suited for different regional temps. Like very hot or very cold areas. Just do your research on your type of bird for your climate.
I've never used .medicated feed as I've always grown ducks with my chick's they can't have medicated feed

I love our buff orpingtons! Any orpingtons really. Rhode Island reds are great, as well as Plymouth rocks! Annnd I love our jersey giant even though my wife doesn’t 😂

I have ameraucanas, Easter eggers, Orpingtons, and (new this spring) sapphire gems and wyandottes.
They are all decent layers, pretty hardy for a wide range of temperatures, and pretty friendly. I adore my girls.
There is a book called Storeys Guide to Raising Chickens. I highly recommend getting a copy and reading it. It has great advice about breeds, housing, diet, general care, even some basic first aid.
I would research what chickens do best in your area or north vs south in regards to living in the cold vs heat.
Also, how many eggs they produce is another factor to consider.
I’m partial to certain color of eggs, so I also chose my chickens based on this factor.
Do you want chickens that are docile and easy to handle or otherwise?
How much space do you have? My coop said that I can have 6 chickens but I only have 3 so that they have room to move around.
I also don’t have roosters as they aren’t allowed in my city and I don’t need any as chickens do produce eggs without a rooster.

Sadly, I only let my chickens free range only when I have the time to be with them due to hawks and my dogs have to be in the house. I try to let them out as often as I can for humane purposes.
I enjoy the shared information in your videos and actually give my two hens all the kitchen scraps I produce, including cooked beans and pasta or rice, but I have given them raw lentils just to find out in your next video that it should not be done?? Is it a no-no? lentils usually do not have to be cooked as long as beans and are softer. They did not seem to bother the birds
A lot of the bad things would be “worst case scenario” type stuff. Yes, they could hurt your birds but that doesn’t mean they will for sure hurt them!
My mom and grand mother raised chickens for years they took all scraps out to them they said chickens know what not to eat. Dont know if thats true but never see any of them get sick or die.

It sounds like they aren’t wanting to stay up on the perch? They keep wanting to go down onto the ground? As long as their coop is secure and nothing can get in there, they should be totally fine! As they get older they will want to climb and be up higher more but when they are young they often times enjoy being down on the ground, it’s easier for them! It will come with time, you’re doing great!

Chickens love scraps.... except mine... they're so bougie. They wont eat lettuce or anything plain. They want berries, tomatoes, and anything big and juicy. They also wont eat the skins on basically anything. They'll eat the meat of the veggie or fruit and leave the peels/skins behind.

Your chicks should have enough feathers to keep warm before going to the coop. They will bundle together to keep warm enough for winter. The breed that you select will also have impact on their winter hardiness. They, too need a rest from egg laying in which winter provides. So no, don’t bring them indoors. Don’t need a lamp or heat lamp either. Just make sure they have fresh water with a heated dog bowl in case of freezing temperatures.

We moved from a 3 bedroom apartment with 5 kids to a 6 bedroom house on a half acre, if we could afford property we would have property 😂. Once the kids start moving out though.. the plan is a small house with a lot of land!

@Rudedude117 I need to get another hat 😂. We do not, but that’s my wife and I’s favorite place. We go there about once a year to the Lincoln city area in January to just get away and relax. If we didn’t each have kids from previous marriages that’s 100% where we would live. The Pacific Northwest is my happy place!
