    Sounds like you enjoyed Fudan. I’m there now, but I’m in the master’s degree program. We don’t get a chance to interact with the language school students at all. It’s like two separate worlds. And you guys are usually only here for a year tops. It makes it hard to get to know you.

    (Just my complaints, you don’t have to read it)
    What an irony... i got 631 (一本線595) in 2015 Anhui Province College Entrance Exam, which was too low to apply Unis like Fudan... yet with that score i got accepted by the University of Amsterdam, and i just got into the National University of Singapore for the exchange program because of my academic performance in the first two years. Fudan was where i wanna go, but they think i was inadequate. I don’t know. It just makes me feel depressed to think of all the extra money paid to study in the Netherlands as a non-EU student and the fact that international students always get into good Chinese universities easily because they are NOT Chinese nationals. The thing is, with a score of 631 I wasn’t be able to go to any place near Fudan. The top universities in china got all the best resources while the rest remains left behind with very limited academic output due to the lack of resources. Should I just blame myself because I didn’t get a Hellish 690 out of 750? I remember when i was interviewed by the uni admission office they told me that i shouldn’t worry too much about my ‘rather too low CEE score’ because they think that Chinese top universities are being too harsh with those numbers. It makes sense, considering everyone now had to compete harder for very limited amount of resources distributed among those very limited numbers of universities.

    According to my experience, the most important thing before traveling to China is to install a VPN first.
    Without a VPN, you will not be able to access Facebook and TH-cam, and choosing a VPN is not an easy task as some VPNs cannot bypass Chinese internet restrictions.
    MetroVPN is a very reliable VPN, better than others I have used before. It supports all models of iPhone and iPad, and all Windows computers. While it's not cheap (about $10 per month), it's really worth it, and it supports multiple devices at the same time.

    Hello ByKaja,
    Thanks for the great content, I have just received the Chinese Government Scholarship to pursue my studies in Shanghai and I have two questions:
    1. Is there a student card that I can use for Shanghai Metro or bus services?
    2. How much students spend on food per month?
    Thanks

    • @Bpaynee
      @Bpaynee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, I studied at Fudan through the government scholarship too (2012-2015 so sorry if the info is dated). Everyone just uses a normal Shanghai metro card for the bus, I don't remember ever hearing about a student card. Public transit is quite cheap in general.
      For food, it depends a lot on what you get, if you're eating in the cafeteria, it can be incredibly cheap, same if you're going to go shopping and cook your own food (minus Western ingredients like butter and cheese). Shanghai can also be as expensive as you want it to be, but a standard meal out could generally be about 30-50 rmb depending on the place (USD 4.5-6.5), or about 15 rmb for just noodles.

I am planning on going for at least 6 months, but I don't know how it compares to Western countries as far as living expenses. Also... any tips you could provide on what I should do to prep for the trip? (ex. pay for a metro card in advance, what level of Mandarin I should be on to get around, etc) Thank you in advance!

    • @KajaKubicka
      @KajaKubicka  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, so rent for a dorm is about 2500 yuan per month and for a room in an apartment I would say around 3500-4000 (and that's not downtown), watch the video I made it's called Cost of Living in Shanghai I talk there about all the cost of life in Shanghai from bills to transportation, coffee, food etc Hope it helps! :)

    What was it like living in the International student dorms at Fudan? I'm really curious as I will be living in an international dorm too... I heard that they impose student curfews

    • @KajaKubicka
      @KajaKubicka  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really loved it, it was super fun. The area is nice, and the dorm itself is decant as well if you have a single room. The only downside is that the big supermarket is quite far (30 min walk to walmart and maybe around 20 to tesco), however there are a lot of more local small shops around and plenty of food places etc. When I lived there and when I visited a friend around half a ayers ago, there was no curfew and to be honest I really don't think they would ever make one. Chinese students who stay at Fudan dorms have curfew but rules are different for students at international dorm, we could leave and come back at whatever time we wanted.

    • @MyChorizoSausage
      @MyChorizoSausage 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      byKaja Thank you so much for the reply! Was it ever a problem having friends visiting Shanghai crash at your room? I'll be living in a single room so I'm really curious about that

    • @KajaKubicka
      @KajaKubicka  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh yeah if that's what you mean that can be a problem, technically you're not allowed to have people over, and everybody who comes over needs to leave an id with the security guards, but I knew a lot of people who had friends coming over and what they would do is to just a rent a room in the dorms for their friends (it was quite cheap) and then you can do whatever you want

    If you are from a western country, doing a degree in China wouldn't be a good idea. Most western governments don't recognize degrees from Chinese universities, even prestigious ones. If you want to study in China, it would be a better idea to just do a semester or two of language study.
