  • Matt Colville Steals, Brennan Lee Mulligan Steals, and Matt Mercer Steals. Your Favorite DMs Stole Their Best Ideas... and that is a good thing because otherwise their content would suck. Imagine Dimension 20 and Critical Role trying to avoid every Tolkien Trope that exists just so their Dwarves can be "different".

TS Eliot has a great quote on this concept too!
“Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different from that from which it was torn.”

@@lootgoblinmarketplace I'll admit, I did have a small gut reaction to the header.
But having DMed myself, I know that some pretty common advice is to not be afraid to steal ideas and techniques. I know I've stolen ideas for how to run campaigns from listening to their talk-backs. And I've happily volunteered ideas for others to use in DnD forums.
So this seemed the more wholesome and likely outcome. 🙂

In a group where we take turns dming our own campaigns, it's refreshing since most of us don't have similar interests so we often get to experience stories blindly, and when we do pick up on the inspiration we'll usually pause to make another snarky reference about it before continuing. I agree on your sentiment 'dont worry about the party catching your reference', it can make for an unexpected inside joke while providing them the opportunity to either play into the trope or subvert it or something else entirely.

  • @Its_me_Stolas
    @Its_me_Stolas 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The best thing about some players getting the references and applying their knowledge to their characters, allows DMs to build the world more naturally. It is not like our brave heroes (or scoundrels) just popped out of nowhere. It shows that they had past, allowing DMs to play around set past and creating more believable flashback.

Whenever I get stumped on a new character I’m creating I too go look through tropes to get some inspiration. My source isn’t the tv tropes site though. Much prefer the OSP channel here on TH-cam. They got a neat and engaging playlist that goes over common tropes. Always a good and inspiring listen! But yeah, use tricks you learn from others! Dnd is still a creative process and learning new techniques and skills and experimenting with how well they work for you and your needs is the bread and butter of expanding and enhancing your own technique in all creative based skills. Doesn’t matter if it is writing, painting, drawing, sculpting, sewing, etc! The great thing about creative hobbies is that we all teach each other to grow and get better because we all want to be better and give back and make our creative craftsmanship better! Honestly it’s why I have always admired any and all artistic and creative skills. It’s one of the few areas where there is a consistent back and forth trading of skills and techniques with, majority of the time, those who engage in it very much seem to enjoy the process of helping each other just as much as creating.
Heck, I remember in high school my art friends and I decided to have a sleep over and work on all our individual paints, and even some collaborative ones and spent the whole night doing that. We would fall asleep and then another would wake up, go and paint some more, fall asleep, someone else wakes up, paints, and the process just repeats over and over all night lol! Let’s just say the friend hosting us, their parents found us hilarious and they recorded a few times where we would do this and showed us our silliness in the morning. It is still a fond memory for all of us. There really is nothing better. I even credit one of my friends for teaching me how to paint and shade in black and white and I credit my brother for teaching me how to paint a face better. I credit my sister for teaching me how fabric falls and forms on a body for clothes, and I credit my girlfriend for teaching me how to draw elbows and ankles properly. I know my friends credit me for my composition skills and color techniques and my girlfriend in particular credits me for helping her with getting figure posing better. And this is all just with drawing and painting. I credit my dad when it comes to me originally learning my skills in drawing and then later in sculpting clay. But for dnd, well I credit each and every dm and other player I have ever played with, both good and bad and everyone in between. They all inspired me in someone way or taught me how to better my skillset. Heck! The first table I played at I thanked my fellow players because they were very good roleplayers and were very encouraging teachers without being overwhelming to me as a newbie to the hobby. I had a patient dm who indulged my creativity and plenty who sat me down and asked me questions that got me thinking creatively. I was allowed and give the room to experiment with strategies and even was helped and prompted when I should ask for a certain check so I could learn when it was the most useful, though never forced to. I had yet another dm who would always encourage us on telling him how we thought our crit fails and crit successes played out, encouraging us to describe it. Another player I play with still really helped teach me how to quickly but effectively tell a story with your character during one’s turn. Some showed me how to rp even during combat without being a hog. I also got taught how to bring in and help encourage shyer players to take their turn in the spotlight and check in with the whole table on courses of action. Seriously, I credit all my knowledge and skills in this game to who I play with and even all the TH-cam content creators who have inspired me over the years. Heck! Even dimension20 and critical role have inspired me by creating what they have. I’m not saying I one to one create another person’s character for my own uses. That isn’t the way I have fun playing (valid still for those who do) but I take elements that I find compelling and compatible with how I do enjoy playing and use those to spark and expand on the idea they create. And this is what I mean by creative hobbies and crafts are amazing in how they work. You just absorb all you have ever learned and work and experiment with it until you find what you like. What’s more, is always evolving. I know some people find that never ending aspect of it daunting but…I adore it. I love the idea that I will never run out of things to learn.
Lol! Well enough of my rambling. I just want to say that it's no bad thing to learn and grow your skill by adopting ideas and techniques from those around you. That you can, and that you should, that is one of amazing parts of being creative in any hobby/skill/craft. It is how we grow, learn, and get better, and help the entire community of fellow creatives grow and evolve and get better too. Every little bit of contribution helps. Who knows, maybe you'll teach or inspire someone else in something that they will treasure for the rest of their days. Just have fun and see what clicks for you. Wishing you all the best on your respective creative journeys!! 😊🎉

As my first encounter in my campaign. I put my group in a big mansion full of zombies and undead creatures, with a massive zombie that was far too strong for them to handle so they had to run and hide from him. I took my inspiration from the RE 1 and RE 3. My players LOVED this part !

Telling me things I learned years ago, I see. I don't even DM. Actually I don't play but I want to one day. :(
But like, one of my player character ideas is basically a combination of Wolverine and Shadow the Hedgehog; a gruff mercenary/assassin with a sword and a gun who kills without mercy or prejudice.
He's a grung. I soon found out that that was actually kinda on brand for the race, but still, I just love juxtaposition of a John Wick-esque edgy action antihero who is also a cartoon frog

I love scouring the internet for inspiration or to discover new and possibly better ways to run my campaigns. Currently, I'm running a Monster Hunter-themed campaign because that was my players' choice. I've also incorporated a Pokemon element (3rd party - Stibbles Codex) and run other 3rd parties material for the campaign. I realized now that I should've slowly converted the campaign. Having possibly have a one-shot for the Pokemon theme, and one-shot for each of the other materials, so when I combine then the party will already be familiar with the material rather than learn them all at once.

As long as it is fun, different from original up to 50%, and captivating, I have nothing against it. My fellow DM, with whom we write campaigns (IN which I occasionally participate) literally reused one character. He changed place of origin, species, and end goal. His quests played otherwise, becuase due to character's origin and culture, he was requesting similar tasks done in another fashion or totally differnt tasks. His atributes ()besides height and weight, do to being different species) and behaviour remained the same, with only two small changes. That NPC was a bit more grumpy and with party being able to piss him off. And that is the story of how 6'1 mothman from an island filled with mountains, and who is profound in magic and alchemy turned into 8'4 brute like Pangolier with his own library, from Savanna biome. So all in all, he changed 4 aspects and a lot of changed. Magical, isn't it. Also, librarian verison ate wizard and rouge for them trying to steal one of the grimuars for those who are wondering, what I meant by "party being able to piss him off"

Reusing a character can be a great strategy to use a character who the party passed on before. I feel like there have been times that a good character didn’t get to have their arc because the party took the narrative another way and instead of trying to force the character to hijack the plot. I just made a similar character down the road that worked with what the party wanted to do!

I would ever be concerned about it only in case I publish something for profit or for a potentially large audience. If you create for yourself or for a small group of followers (your group is a perfect example of such a group), it can be as plagiaristic as you want or as your audience can put up with.
