  • It’s finally time to hang gates on the 8” Pipe Entrance Project. This is video ten in this series. I’ll be hanging both custom pipe gates I built a few videos ago in my shop here on-site by myself with the help of my gate jack and welding rig gin pole. It’s so great to have these homemade tools that allow me to do bigger projects like this myself and with minimal equipment.
    We have at least one more video in this series coming next week so make sure to subscribe if you want to be notified. You can find links to the rest of the series below as well as links to the store. You can buy digital prints and material list to build your own gin pole and gate jacks from my shop.

    Starting a welding business. First, figure out what services you want to provide. There are people that work in their garage and never leave for a welding job. There are folks that don't have a home and live on the road. Until you figure out what market you want to do, you can never do it. If you try to be everything to everyone, you will never be any good to anyone. Me, I was a structural mobile welder. My truck is an ex railroad truck. F700 with a crew cab, tool boxes and a knuckle boom. I carry way more tools on my truck than Ross does but I used to do a lot of stuff onsite. I even have a track torch and a small hydraulic (shop made benchtop) for and a good number of portapower tools to straiten and bend things in the field. Think it through. Is welding or even owning your own business what is good for you. You have to understand owning your own business is tough sometimes. You have to be willing to get punched in the face over and over again and keep getting up with a smile. Once you get established and you start making a profit, make sure the business doesn't go up your nose. I can't tell you the number of people that I've seen earn more money than the average factory worker and suddenly they are way over their head and loose everything because they just aren't cut out to deal with the troubles of owning your own business.

    You reckon the gin pole would work on a truck with a regular bed? I'm thinking if the chains were welded higher up to clear the tailgate, and you could connect them to the pin in the gooseneck hitch maybe? That's a sharp-looking entrance you've built

    • @arosswelding
      @arosswelding  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used it on my other truck that had a reg bed but I just took the tail gate off and hooked the chains to a couple of after market hooked that were in the lower corners of the bed.

    Just wanted to let you know that you’re in the same place I was about 30 years ago. Not a bad place to be, because the advice you gave was spot on. When I was still rig welding, for other companies, I decided to stay where I am and start a business. I was here for a year and a half welding high pressure steam pipe. It took a while for the folks to come. But word got around kinda quick. I’m not from this part of the state, but now I’m supposed to be retired and the regular customers won’t let me. Lol. But now its not a job, because I work at my pace and not pipe. 50 years of pipe is enough. But I love to build what people dream of. Keep up the great work and it’s hard to drag up when you work for yourself. Good luck

    Mr Ross can I get some advice I'm doing an gate repair and it's got so much I need to weld up its not iron gates I've done the blacksmithing part but what electrodes would you recommend 6013s or something different as I need to order them before I weld up and finish?

  • @Michaeloneone91
    @Michaeloneone91 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Austin my name is Michale i e been welding for a little over two years now been in business for myself for a little over a year. I want to let you know that I'm a big fan of your work. I was hoping that maybe I could get a little bit of advise on a project that I've been working on for a couple months now. So my question is, about how far do you think one can span a gate made up of 2-3/8" used oil field pipe without too much of a sag. Because I've got 32' entryway and My customer wants double swinging gates and I'm just not real sure that it can be done without shortening the entry way about 6'. What the customer wants is 2 (roughly) 16' double swinging gates. The fence is 5' tall so to match the fence I figure I'm going to have to build the gates at about 4'- 8" to accommodate for a little bit of sag. The largest gates I've ever hung were 12' and I had hell getting them level with no sag. I will be using pieces of 2-7/8" pipe for my hinge system..Similar to what you use in the video... You got any tips or tricks you can help a poor white boy out with..? Before I go and bite off more then i can chew. Thanks in advance.

    I would add that you need to be cautious of how much you sweeten the deal. You scale it back 40% like in your example, even people that are worth doing repeat jobs for will start to give second thought to similar/same jobs with a much higher price tag when work isn't hand-to-mouth anymore.

    Speaking of tires, here's something I've wondered about.. Most all welding beds I see have only one or two inches clearance between fender n the duals. Don't you have a Lot more suspension travel than that ? Don't your tires scrub the fenders when you hit a bump or pothole ? What gives ? Style ?

    So you are customer service first, a welder/service/fabricator second. Anyone can sort of be a contractor. Very few take care of their customers. Like you said, maybe break even on the first job, earn respect, prove your worth. It will pay off with customer service. The Japanese call that Kaizen. It came from Dr Demming. Continuous improvement.

    That entry is a credit to you. Looks great now those very effective gates are hung. It can be hard to get a start especially in a rural area where they tend to go on word of mouth. Giving a bit either way and a bit of horse trading does help. A mate of mine shall we say dealt in commodities rather than cash for years as a way of living off grid. It was a way of life for him at the time. So many now chase the money but usually pay out the big money too. Each to their own.

    Austin that is an impressive job. I wish steel pipe like that was more accessible around where I live as I would experiment with it. As it is wood posts and steel wires are king around here but oh that steel is impressive.

    Just wanted to know why not install gates opposite to give it more flare. Not that it looks bad but just a little flare. Love your work

    I thought you might paint the gate, before you installed. Looking forward to the completion.

    Say the gate wasn’t level or looked off after that first weld when you tested it would you have cut the tacks and adjusted the gate ?

    Would you recommend stick welding or flux core welding to start off with?
