If you want to buy one of the best 3D platformers in recent gaming memory, you can do that and also support the channel by buying it over at GoG with this link.

Definitely can agree, Demon Turf is a really fun speed game.
Holding the any% record for DT and the dev's previous game Slime-san, when it comes to speedrun stuff, they certainly know how to pull it off.
Slime-san, as a 2D game, had more weird skips where we'd go out of bounds or do some sequence breaking, but Demon Turf's level design hugely incentivizes shortcuts, as you said.
I can only recommend watching my (or any other) speedrun, it's filled with clever skips you'll see yourself thinking "Oh dang! I could've thought of this, woah!!". Pretty much all of your points already apply to our runs and routing it was intense. There are many variables and there are different ways to collect the needed items. I do it one way, the other person does it a different way and there is no way to definitively say which is the better way. Still, many good tricks and skips and weird stuff to woah the viewers. We're still climbing closer to that sub 1 hour mark, hoping to be the one to break it lmao
Regarding the combat stuff: We basically skip all of those, haha
And yes, individual level runs are crazy. We haven't submitted a lot of them to our SRC page yet, but it's very tough competition. A lot of it is posted on our discord, but trust me, a LOT of crazy skips you wouldnt believe are possible. I'm still holding almost every single IL time on the ingame leaderboards of the Steam/PC version and getting those without the ingame mods was a crazy task. I'll be optimizing as far as I can before I start using mods though.
The devs are in tight contact with us speedrunners and constant talks on which skips and bugs to keep and which to patch and they absolutely love to see their game being broken. I personally talk to them often and they are very open, which is really great.
All in all a very nice video on DT!

Celeste was designed from the ground up as a speed game and did really well in the sphere since it became one of the most speedrun game of the last decade.
The ingredients are - Syncing the cycles of moving platforms/enemies in such a way that they are always consistent so that you have no RNG, making a really precise movement system that can be infinitely be improved at over time and finally making a really good game with level design where you can approach things in different ways based on skill level.

Really liking this game so far! I'm only about 4 hours in atm, but the gameplay and level design feel well polished and very natural after playing through Super Mario Odyssey. My only complaints so far is that a lot of the 2D character sprites look like straight up butt, and also having the controlled character as a 2D sprite makes it difficult to understand your hitbox. Lastly, the red spinning grates in Mr Mint's Trials make me wanna break my controller every time with how strict the timing and precision is on them.

About speedruns, its like, i dunno, its down to luck really, it's all about the community showing interest, sometimes it takes a while, sometimes its super fast like Celeste.
I'm surprised marketing hasn't started sponsoring speedruners for games like these that are sorta intended as a speed game, tho', considering how every single time a new big Metroidvania, Soulsy or Horror game comes out there is a lot of dumbasses going ''I saw someone beat this in 1 hour, wow, 60 dollars for that?'' i kinda get why they don't do it. Cause there's a lot of dumbasses online.

I don't think this game will succeed as a speed game. The main reason being watch-ability. As you said the art style is divisive and as such people streaming speedruns will probably see a lower viewer count than normal. The lower view count will incentivize runners to not spend an excessive amount of time streaming it. 2nd thought I think the sheer amount of content makes it harder to have categories for Demon Turf. Example if you speedrun a level do you use any upgrades or just upgrades you could have up to that point or no upgrades at all? I could see an any% speedrun maybe being viable but the first issue of watch-ability still comes to mind.

There's a very thin line between making an homage and straight-up stealing. That first level shown isn't a love letter to retro 3D titles, it's literally just Bowser in the Dark World. Whatever positives there are to say, that's going to sour my opinions of this game going forward--now I have to wonder how many of those positives are actually from the devs themselves and how many of those positives were just lifted from other games by talentless hacks.
