oh my god, hantavirus can literally be lethal, in fact it has a 38% mortality rate, meaning statistically 1 in 3 people that contract it can die!! The company was SOOOO negligent, if you have the resources, definitely look into pursuing legal action against them since they were not taking your life seriously and they're also putting visitors and all the employees in danger. Oh my god, that was so horrible. I am soooo happy to see you healthy and alive to talk about this now.

Wow, just wow. I am VERY aware of Yosemite and the response to the risks you faced. I am wondering if you have had a blood test that would reveal the antibodies for Hantavirus? If not you should absolutely get one done. This would not only be for your benefit but to have this documentation it would help to bring the changes that would protect others.
Your case should have been reported to the California State health department. Do you know if it was? If not get the blood work and if possible for exposure, make sure it is reported.
I would love to say more but not on a public forum. No need to apologize for your handling of this situation, all you needed to do was to survive. Many others who knew how to handle it, let you down. Happy to chat privately.

Wow. Your final advice to Aramark was spot on and very undestated! After all you had been through! I lived and worked there in 1972 and 1975, was thinking about returning for a summer. But it was not as crazy back then, the clinic was assesable, and though overcrowded all summer, could easily get away from it all. With the number of residents and visitors today its unconsionable that the medical facilities are not keeping up. I wonder if shortage of help, in maintenance, contributes to the problems? Or is management just too cheap? It's an amazing place I could write chapters on the amazing experiances I've had there, so hope folks take your advice

I am so sorry to hear about this. I have worked in Yosemite as well and 2/3 libraries had abundant signs of rodent infestations. The conditions are shameful. I am so sorry you had to go through that. Do you know what kind of tests were used for your diagnosis? I am writing a research paper about hantavirus and this is of great interest to me.

The 2012 outbreak of hantavirus infections among Yosemite visitors was the largest recognized outbreak of SNV infections in the United States since the Four Corners outbreak in 1993. Ten persons had laboratory-confirmed SNV infection after lodging in Yosemite during June-July 2012. Eight had HPS and 3 died.

2012 was my first season working and living in the park. Those numbers you got must just be visitors cause employees that lived in the Curry area (Huff employee housing area) infection numbers were way higher, they just dont want any accountability. When it comes down to it they really dgaf about the employees. My roommate and I had it but not as bad as a lot of others.

I think you should consult with a lawyer regarding your infection. The company obviously failed to educate you properly about hantavirus. Further, they should have provided you with gloves and mask to use when dealing with the mice.
Also, there should be lighted space for you to eat upside your tents. Eating in a tent will transfer the smell into the tent fabric.

It is a good thing Hannah is not living in Yosemite. Her soft method of humanely catching mice and releasing them a few miles away (and filming herself doing that) would not have worked very well😂... There have been several outbreaks of hantavirus infections in Curry Village over the years, even killing some people. It is a well known problem. I am so sorry for you that they did not find a solution and you did catch it. I am also very glad that you are fine, in good spirit, and that it is just a bad memory.

I was hired summer 23' to work in curry village with Aramark, and turned down the job bc lack of communication from the company, and did a little research on the tent situation, and honestly red flags before even starting the job just looking up on reddit people who used to work there. Sucks that some of these companies who hire seasonally treat their workers like this.

I worked there many years as year round. You are right but should layer in some further perspective. I never worked for Aramark but the people before them had many of the same problems. Things they never seemed to address. But you should bare in mind they have to get approval from NPS for any work done. Anything that changes the slightest aspect of the park must be approved. I know for a fact that getting rid of all tent housing for employees and building more dorm style has long been on a back burner. But California and NPS put those very far down the list of what they want done.
I will say this though, unless it has radically changed the employee housing department has problems that go well beyond what is allowed by law. To say there was some preferential treatment of certain peoples might be mild.
I will say if you listen to some of these people and try to sue, be ready to spend far more than you will ever see. The contracts they sign with NPS gives them a lot of leeway is cases like yours. That fact they no work at all can change any facility without prior approval for instance. They would produce documents forwarding requests for work to NPS and NPS would show environmental studies in process that was why the approval was pending. NPS is city hall there, you can't fight city hall.

What shameful behavior from Aramark... I've worked seasonal at Rocky Mountain NP, not for Aramark, but also had to deal with very unsanitary conditions. Sadly many of these lodging companies in the parks seem to think that since you have the privilege of working in a scenic location, you must not deserve safe and clean housing or a proper wage. It can be a great experience doing these jobs but people need to be aware of the cons as well and do as much research as they can into a specific location or company.

Okey, you seem like an awesome human being. And you are very independent. But as a rule of thumb if you are having troubles with basic human needs like eating, drinking, coping with illness - you need help. And you need help from a grownup. A grownup is the one who has experience and can reason well in difficult situations. You need to outsource important life decisions while you are trying to get better. So call your family next time.
The neglect from the company means they do it intentionaly.
The doctor that being payed by the park will always steer you away from thinking that the park was somehow envolved. The best outcome for the doctor and the company - that you think its your fault or this happened by chance.
The reason why u should stand and defend your rights is to punish that ignorance behavior that can lead to other people becoming sick. And it should be done by grownups. Its not because your not capable of solving a problem. You are young and you just don’t have enough experience yet.
Anyway, I’m glad you’re well now.

    @mustardman 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think my take away from this is that if people who have done what I’m about to do, set a rule, following it mostly, is not the way to go, ie food in the tents. I have been an adventure guide in the past, basically doing what this young lady is doing, working outdoors, living basically in a tent or camping for an entire summer. I remember talking to the older guides and the management and they would say we have rules in camp and for how to conduct yourself basically on and off the job for the summer. There were folks who followed the rules and had a fairly easy/fun summer season. Some didn’t and pushed the limits and suffered difficulties and various hardships along the way.

I hear what youre saying, I might think that too if I hadn't worked for this terrible company in Yosemite myself. Aramark is 100% negligent. They take advantage of new seasonal employees like this young lady, and anyone that doesn't have the means to go after them legally. There's a ton of bureaucratic red tape nonsense that goes on there, NPS is not innocent either. Bottomline is they both have their priorities and ensuring the wellbeing of employees and being competent employers is not one of them.
