Went for the Rift S for iRacing. I wanted the headset wired directly to the GPU, no compression over USB like the Quest 2. No doubt the Q2 has better specs, but needs a really good GPU to work well. Rift S has lower specs, plugs directly to GPU and matches my IPD perfectly. I would rather crank up the graphics on a Rift S than turn them down on a Q2.
Alright Karl. I just tracked down a used CV1. Runs really good on my laptop which was the goal. I’ll mess with the settings of course but wanted to thank you for helping steer me toward it.
picked up the rift s a couple of months back. My first VR headset and i love it especially for sim racing. Not overly fussed about the sound quality as my headphones fit perfectly fine over it. To be honest i'm just amazed that you can pick up a new VR headset for 350 these days it has transformed my sim racing experience and has completed my "Dream setup"
Karl, you are quickly becoming my go to source for sim-racing paraphernalia! Was just looking for a good headset for sim-racing. Bought the playseat challenge, Thrustmaster ts-pc and the t-lcm pedals based on your recommendations. Going from a desk mounted g920, it makes a world of difference.
Yeah I just returned my new rift s. Wasn't that big of an upgrade for me from my cv1. Controllers are cheaper, tracking is fine and the 80hz refresh rate is noticeable.
Thank you for this, I’m picking up a CV1 for £120, and based on this video I’m glad I’m not getting the Rift S. I will be using sim racing a lot but also for normal VR. Thank you 🙏
I can see the imporevements but man... i can get cv1 used (perfect condition) for like 300€ and rift s would cost me another 400€. Not sure if its worth that much more or should i just get started with CV1 and get a better one later down the line? And on top my head is probably to fat / big for rift s.
Thanks for this video, I have my PC on its way and sim racing will be my main use and I keep hearing mixed reviews. This is the most balanced review I’ve watched. Thanks 🙏🏽
I tried out a whole bunch of headsets. Index, Pimax, Reverb. Ironically I went back to my CV1. So far improvements have not been big enough to be worth the money for a complete new setup + controllers + lighthouses. They all have their pros and cons (Pimax was panful to wear), but I did not find a single one that hit the spot. On the other side the CV1 is light, requires zero lens adjustments for me, is a breeze to use and well, I have it already.
Very informative video, bought a cv1 and was going to return it and get a S instead but this video made me change my mind! As you said not worth the upgrade so might aswell keep this!
I’m looking at used rift. I want the clarity of the S but since I probably will mostly play Assetto Corsa no Hesi, I think the CV1 might be better for me since I’ll be playing mostly with nighttime settings on the Tokyo highways and Togue. Probably also play some horror games.
These days both are very low res units, if you want a wired headset then go G2 otherwise for wireless PCVR a Q2, Q3 or Pico 4 would be my recommendation.
@@KarlGosling Thanks for the advice! I’ll try to find a deal on a G2. Im seeing them for about 3 times the price of a Rift S/CV1. Rift S/CV1 on eBay goes for about $80. Im also looking at wheels, pedals, shifters, etc. trying to get a decent starter setup put together for as cheap as possible.
Another good comparison, mate. Pretty much agree with everything you've said. While I'm happy with my Rift-S, It could really do with a faster frame rate. Coming from a Playstation VR, which does 90Hz, 120Hz, or 60Hz reprojected to 120Hz, that 80Hz is really noticeable on the Rift-S. That said it's easy to get used to the 80Hz, and the increase in resolution goes some way to make up for it. If I could, I'd get a Valve Index right away, but it's not available in Switzerland, so I'm seriously thing of getting an HP Reverb for both a resolution increase and an increase to 90Hz.
Just came across your channel mate think I've wat had about 10 videos loved your review on the logitech g920. Just wondering when do new videos come out mate?
Yeah i have yet to get one myself but i tried my friend rift s with his wheel amd omg it was fantastic i hot a wheel setup recently and i really cant wait so i would recommend the rift s plus the og rift is like 500 for some reason so yeah
On the 80hz vs 90hz topic, it's such a small difference it's barely noticed. The big pro to the rift s 80hz is that it require less hardware power to run 80fps, which leaves space for more AI, higher settings, or just helpful for people with lower end specs that don't want to use ASW (bc it sucks imo).
I suffer badly with motion sickness and notice it, more so the slightly jittery tracking though. But that small performance advantage is lost because of higher resolution of the Rift S mate.... Oculus dropped to 80hz to accommodate this and keep the required minimum spec the same as the CV1.
@@KarlGosling Ah okay, I only suffered with motion sickness the first couple of days i owned it so I'm lucky in that regard. Completely forgot about the higher res so yeah my comment is pretty much shite hahaha, great videos though love how real you are and always talk about points that actually matter :)
Hi Karl, I want to buy a second hand oculus rift cv1, but it has jitter issue when in front of sensor, my question is can we use the oculus rift cv1 without sensor and touch controller for sim racing like forza horizon and city car driving?. Thanks
What wheel or controller you use makes no difference mate, think of VR headsets as just another display, like a TV or monitor when it comes to racing games.
i sniped a cheapppppp cv1 for the first vr headset ever. and figure once i can actually buy a gpu better than what im running then ill get a better vr headset lol. but all together 3 sensors. 2 controllers.. cv1 and the lil remote. 60$ works great. but i nkow my gpu isnt going to allow for the best experience. it really sucks i havent been able to find any better graphics cards that arent trying to rob me blind lol and i figure worst case scenario ill toss it bac online and just upgrade cv1 should still beable toget me money back lol
I got a Rift CV1, and I thought about upgrading to a Rift s, but for me it has to many cons (bad audio/80Hz/insight being the main points). Even tho the Rift s is better (in general) Iam fine with the CV1. I wait for a HMD that fixes all the flaws and combines the best of two maybe even three world's (yep quest)
Just a question! I have a cv1.. Oculus has stopped the production of it and I need a new controller. What’s my options? Can’t find good info about it...
I do like driving! :) Although these days the roads are so busy you can't really get out and enjoy yourself like you used to be able to, I've retired from my boy racer days and drive an old BMW E38 now, I'll put up a quick video of it tonight, it's nothing fancy but I like it.

No problem mate! :)
brought a rift s a few weeks back. awesome VR headset and very affordable! Very easy to setup too!
Best bang for buck at the moment I think mate.

apple juice in my area they are all going for cv1 $220-$300 also mainly closer to $300 for for me in my area south USA

Happy to help mate, enjoy your new setup! :)
Karl- this is still pertinent to me so thanks for such insight.
Oh nice! TBF The CV1 if you can get a good one is still a very useable headset today, specially if you only have a medium spec PC!

Cheers for the honest thoughts. I have a Rift S on pre order so i'm looking forward to when it arrives at christmas probably! :)
Thanks for the video, you speak in a very nice way, its easy for me to understand as English isn't my first language

@@KarlGosling cool mate well I've subscribed looking forward to new content
Karl ,which headset you are using now for simrace. What you recomend.
For sim racing I use triples, for everything in VR a Quest 2 as it's wireless.
Good video Karl. Can you help me with...Rift S or Quest 2? Thks mate.

lol Thats a good a reason as any to go with the Quest! :)
@karl gosling.
So now the quest 2 has come Out would you say that's now a Good Time To upgrade.
If you're PC can run it well, yes!
@@KarlGosling yea should do.... 9600kf and 5700xt with 16gb 3200 ram
What about the thc vibe? I thought that was better than oculus?
You mean the HTC Vive? But no, for sim racing it has the worst of all the visuals, terrible screen door effect.
Karl Gosling lmao yes HTC.
Well thank you.
