The Tholians were an extremely xenophobic, non-humanoid hermaphroditic species with a propensity for precision.
    History and politics:
The head governmental unit of the Tholians was the Tholian Assembly. During the mid-22nd century, the Vulcan High Command had only limited contact with the Assembly. It was, however, unknown at the time that they may have been involved as a faction in the Temporal Cold War. (ENT: "Future Tense")
    First contact with Earth:
In 2152, the Tholians made an unusual move; they traveled far beyond their territory and actively sought to possess a 31st century time travel pod discovered by the Earth starship Enterprise NX-01, under the command of Jonathan Archer. Four Tholian ships intercepted and disabled the Vulcan cruiser Tal'Kir, while it waited to rendezvous with Enterprise. They, in turn, attacked and defeated a Suliban fleet that was in pursuit of the arriving Earth ship. They then successfully removed the pod from Enterprise's possession, only to have the pod return to its proper time moments later. (ENT: "Future Tense")
    The Defiant incident:
In the mirror universe, in 2155, the Tholians detonated a tri-cobalt warhead inside the gravity well of a dead star. The explosion created an interphasic rift which acted as a doorway to a parallel universe. Because of its instability, the Tholians reasoned that it was too dangerous to send one of their own ships through, so they transmitted a distress call into the opening, hoping to lure a ship from the other side. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly")
In 2268 of the prime universe, the Federation starship USS Defiant entered this region of space, annexed by the Tholians, in response to the distress call. Three weeks later, the starship USS Enterprise discovered the Defiant trapped in a spatial interphase, only to observe the starship, and consequently landing party leader James T. Kirk, cross over into the mirror universe.
Shortly thereafter, a Tholian ship intercepted the Enterprise, demanding that it leave Tholian territory. At the request of First Officer Spock to be allowed to rescue Kirk from the Defiant, Tholian Commander Loskene allowed the Enterprise and its crew a small timeframe before they were required to withdraw. Because the Enterprise crew was unable to rescue Kirk in the time provided, though, the Tholians opened fire, damaging the Enterprise. A second Tholian starship soon arrived and the Tholians then attempted to trap the Enterprise in their web. The Enterprise, however, was able to recover Kirk and escape successfully, without actually falling victim to the web. (TOS: "The Tholian Web")
In the conclusion of "In Essence Nothing" (a story outline that became "The Tholian Web"), the Tholians followed the Enterprise, once Captain Kirk was rescued, into the parallel dimension and approached the starship for another attack. Outmatched by the Enterprise in this strange alternate dimension, the Tholians accepted peaceful overtures initiated by the retrieved Kirk and finally returned to normal space with the Enterprise. (The Star Trek Compendium, 4th ed., p. 116; [1])
Unknown at the time, the Defiant had traveled back in time to the mirror universe, where, when fully clear of the interphase, it was towed by the Tholians of that universe to a small moon drydock in the Vintaak system, deep in Tholian space. There, they employed several humanoids to gut the ship. Commander Jonathan Archer of Starfleet learned of the vessel's presence in his universe. He commandeered the ISS Enterprise and flew it deep into Tholian space, while cloaked, to steal the Defiant. After Archer sent a boarding party to the Defiant, the Tholians spun a tractor web around the Enterprise and destroyed it. The boarding party managed to activate the Defiant's systems, but not before the Tholians spun a tractor web over the entrance of the drydock. The Defiant then destroyed three Tholian ships and the moon's drydock, before escaping the system. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly", "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")
    Later aggressions:
The Tholians' contact with Starfleet over the next century was sporadic. In 2353, Kyle Riker, father of William T. Riker, was a civilian strategist advising Starfleet in an ongoing conflict with the Tholians. The starbase he was operating out of was attacked, resulting in the death of the entire base crew except for Kyle, who survived his injuries. (TNG: "The Icarus Factor")
"The Icarus Factor" gives no further details beyond mentioning "[...] Starfleet in its conflict with the Tholians." Kyle Riker's posting afer his recovery at Tokyo Base to work out the Fuurinkazan battle strategies, as well as his following work as a tactical advisor to Starfleet at Starbase Montgomery may or may not be related to this "Tholian conflict." In the script of DS9: "Homefront", it is stated that Admiral Leyton is "a veteran of conflicts with the Romulans, Cardassians, Borg, and the Tholians."
The Tholians remained sufficiently dangerous for Starfleet to develop Tholian-based battle simulations. In 2355, during one such simulation, William T. Riker used a notable strategy to calculate a sensory blind spot on a Tholian vessel. (TNG: "Peak Performance")
The Tholians continued to be a strategic concern for Starfleet well into the 2360s, when it was anticipated by Klingon special emissary K'Ehleyr that, if a Klingon Civil War were to break out in 2367, the Tholians might eventually be involved. (TNG: "Reunion")
    Trade and diplomacy:
The Tholians conducted business with Bajoran trader Razka Karn in the early 2370s. They pursued him because of unscrupulous "business" practices, so he took refuge in the Badlands. (DS9: "Indiscretion")
According to a dialogue in the deleted scene 2 of the episode "Defiant", a Tholian ambassador aboard Deep Space 9 reported that someone broke into his quarters during the night and stole three cases of latinum which was meant to be the dowry for his wedding. [2]
Several weeks later, Odo accused Nog of stealing from the Tholian ambassador on Deep Space 9 and arrested Nog and Jake Sisko for the deed. However, this was actually part of a plan Jake Sisko had formulated in an attempt to repair his friendship with Nog. Nog maintained his innocence, claiming not even to know what a Tholian looked like. (DS9: "Life Support")
At one point, the Tholian ambassador on DS9 owed the station commander, Captain Benjamin Sisko, a favor and obtained Tholian silk for him, which Sisko then gave to his girlfriend, Kassidy Yates. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior")
The following year, a Tholian observer was killed in the bombing of the Antwerp Conference on Earth by a Dominion infiltrator. (DS9: "Homefront") Despite this, the Tholians signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion in the following year, prior to the outbreak of the Dominion War, remaining neutral throughout the conflict. (DS9: "Call to Arms")
In 2379, Romulan Senator Tal'aura had an appointment with the Tholian ambassador to Romulus, conveniently causing her to leave the Senate chambers only moments before the assassination of the entire Senate. (Star Trek Nemesis)

    At 00:25 Tholian starship!
The Tholian starship of the 22nd century was a relatively small starship employed by the Tholian Assembly.
    Affiliation:
    Tholian Assembly
    Active:
    22nd century
    Crew complement:
Could be operated by a single individual
    Armament:
Particle beam weapons, Tholian web, energy-dampening weapon
    History:
In 2152, making an unusual move, the Tholians traveled far beyond their territory, as they attempted to possess a 31st century time-travel pod discovered by the Earth starship Enterprise NX-01. Four Tholian starships intercepted and disabled the Vulcan cruiser Tal'Kir while it waited to rendezvous with Enterprise. They also attacked and defeated a fleet of Suliban vessels that were in pursuit of the arriving Earth ship. They then successfully removed the pod from Enterprise's possession, only to have the pod return to its proper timeline moments later. (ENT: "Future Tense")
In the mirror universe, numerous Tholian starships were encountered by the ISS Enterprise in 2155. A single vessel of this class was no match for an NX-class starship, though several of these vessels were capable of destroying such a craft, particularly when employing a Tholian web.
These vessels later discovered Enterprise's illegal presence in the Vintaak system, attempting to steal the USS Defiant. Several of these ships encased Enterprise with a web, then proceeded to destroy it with weapons fire. These vessels later attempted to block the Defiant to prevent its theft, only to be destroyed. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly", "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")
Mike Sussman was thrilled that many Tholian ships were shown in "In a Mirror, Darkly" and that the destruction of one of these was portrayed on-screen. He reckoned, "I think they created another 12 Tholian ships that surrounded the Enterprise." (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, pp. 15 & 17)
    Technical dataEdit
Tholian vessels were of a characteristic cuneiform shape, and their small size made this type of vessel highly agile. Each side of its exterior had a glowing, patterned screen panel. This class was outfitted with formidable weaponry, including a type of energy-dampening weapon which they used against Enterprise to render it almost completely powerless. The interiors of these vessels were kept at temperatures exceeding 200 °C. (ENT: "Future Tense", "In a Mirror, Darkly")
The screen panels at the sides of the Tholian ships were the result of an attempt to show where the power and energy came from, inside the ship. (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 12)
In the final draft script of "Future Tense", the Tholian ships' energy-dampening weaponry was referred to as "energy pulses".
The concept that the insides of the Tholian ships were extremely hot was established in "Future Tense". It came from speculations which Mike Sussman, who co-wrote that episode with Phyllis Strong, found while reading through many "semi-professional publications" which had been written about Star Trek; some individuals had suggested that seeming ripples in the viewscreen image from a 23rd century Tholian ship in TOS episode "The Tholian Web" were actually heat ripples. (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 16)
    Background information:
In the final draft script of "Future Tense", this type of ship was described as "a sleek, wedge-shaped alien starship."
The task of modifying the 23rd century style of Tholian ship for the predominantly 22nd century settings of Star Trek: Enterprise was made the responsibility of Concept Artist John Eaves, who regarded the opportunity as "a great assignment to retro-out the Tholian ship." (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 10) Due to the original configuration having been extremely memorable, designing an earlier version of it for Enterprise was always going to be difficult. Eaves had to create something new while also incorporating the design language that TOS Art Director Matt Jefferies had established for the Tholian ship. For Eaves, the solution was to retain parts of the original design, while making the styling of the new version appear slightly older. (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 12)
John Eaves wanted to keep the front view of the modified Tholian ship style identical to its predecessor but chose to make some changes to the exterior elsewhere, as he felt the profile view of the original craft was somewhat harsh and stark. "I thought it would be good to elongate the ship so that it appeared sleeker," he stated, "but also make it look like it could be a forebear of the original design." A new element he decided to add was the screen panels on the sides of the exterior. (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 12)
For help with modifying the Tholian ship, John Eaves consulted Scenic Art Supervisor Michael Okuda. "I talked to Mike a lot about ship ideas," Eaves recalled. "He was the go-to guy if I had questions. He was always there to make sure I was keeping the design in the vein of the original. I liked to try and push it right to the edge until he'd say, 'OK, that's kind of borderline, but I think it will still be approved.'" (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 12)
Although John Eaves usually liked to devise at least four or five alternative designs before submitting them to the producers for approval, the 22nd century style of Tholian ship turned out to be a rare exception. In fact, Eaves immediately hit upon a suitable design direction and ended up offering only two layouts. These were demonstrated in a collection of concept illustrations, dated November 2002. Eaves was particularly pleased with one of these configurations, which made use of negative space at the rear. The other version, however, was the preferred choice of the producers. "But it wasn't a hardship or a problem," Eaves related. "I was happy with either one of these designs." (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, pp. 12-13 & 10-11)
Although Mike Sussman was instrumental in reintroducing Tholian spacecrafts on Star Trek: Enterprise, he was not directly involved in updating the look of the vessels. "I had no idea what the art department was going to come up with in terms of [...] [the Tholian] ship," he reflected. "I was just super-thrilled to see what they had designed." (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 16)
Despite obviously being related to the original design of Tholian ships, the Star Trek: Enterprise version was represented with modern visual effects. It was built and animated as a CGI model at Eden FX. (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 13)
John Eaves was unsure of the size of the 22nd century form of Tholian ship, an aspect which viewers were also puzzled about. Eaves remembered, "I was basing my design on the size of the original [....] I didn't know if the Tholian ship was piloted by one guy, or two guys, or even a whole crew." (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 26, p. 13) The revised final draft script for "In a Mirror, Darkly" does, though, refer to a Tholian starship as "small."
    Apocrypha:
In Star Trek Online, the 22nd-century Tholian ships (or ones with a similar appearance) are known as Tholian Widow fighters, and are deployed from larger carrier-type Tholian ships as combat craft.

    Tholians
    Origin: Tholian space.
A highly advanced sentient - apparently crystalline species, non-humanoid in appearance and extremely territorial in disposition. They hail from a hot planet by human standards, probably not Class-M. Together, two Tholian ships can literally spin a web of energy in space in order to trap an enemy vessel, after which the web is then drawn together, constricting and finally destroying the vessel inside. On stardate 5693.2, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 made first contact with this species.

0:27 I really liked how John Eaves designed this magnificent 22nd Century version of the iconic Tholian ship!
    Tholian starship concept art
John Eaves' concept art for the modified Tholian ship image: vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/4/44/Tholian_starship_concept_art.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20141115112812&path-prefix=en

    • @iyziejane
      @iyziejane ปีที่แล้ว

The theme song is ridiculous indeed, for a show about science to open with a Christian rock chorus about "I got faith...", I get it. But the theme song is different from past Trek orchestrals in the same way that Archer is different as a Captain. Archer is less refined and more of a brash cowboy than Kirk even, and not an intellectual at all compared to guys like Picard. He even keeps a dog in his quarters! Archer represents the baby boomer ideal of the American man, they decided to go with an "America imposing its will on the world after WW2" portrayal of the first human voyages into the galaxy. So the theme song fits Archer. Being a Picard fan, I thought of Archer as the opposite of what I wanted for a Trek captain. He had to win me over very slowly as the series went on, but eventually he did, so it's worth watching with an open mind. Any fan of pre-2008 Trek does themselves a disservice by skipping Enterprise IMO, it's up there with TNG and TOS, above DS9 and VOY.

They are a very close knit offshoot of the main Tholian society that consisted of a Pawolian, Mawolian, and Bubbaolian members.
